`Advance Praise for Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One
`"Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One is just like having Deke sitting next to you while you
`learn how organize, enhance, share, and print your photos. To me it's crystal clear! Deke
`loves exploring software to find the best techniques to improve images and his easy-to-
`understand, cut-to-the-chase explanations are extremely helpful."

`

`Welcome to Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One, the latest in a se-
`ries of (what I hope I conservatively term) lavishly visual, full-color
`titles that combine step-by-step lessons with two hours of video
`instruction. As the name One-on-One implies, l walk you through
`Photoshop Elements 4 just as if I were teaching you in a classroom
`environment. Except that instead of getting lost in a crowd. of students,
`you receive my individualized attention. It's just you and me.
`
`I created One-on-One with three audiences in mind. If you're a digi-
`talphotographer orgraphic artist—professional oramateur—you'll
`appreciate the hands-on approach and the ability to set your own
`pace. If you're a student working in a classroom or vocational set-
`ting, you'll enjoy the personalized attention, structured exercises,
`and end-of-lesson quizzes. If you're an instructor in a college or
`vocational setting, you'll find the topic-driven lessons helpful in
`building curricula and creating homework assignments. Photoshop
`Elements 4 One-on-One is designed to suit the needs of beginners
`and intermediate users. But I've seen to it that each lesson contains
`a few techniques that even experienced users don't know.
`
`Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One is your chance to learn and have
`fun with Photoshop Elements under the direction of a professional
`trainer with 20 years of computer design and imaging experience.
`Read the book, watch the videos, do the exercises. Proceed at your
`own pace and experiment as you see fit. It's the best Way to learn.

`
`Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One contains twelve
`lessons, each made u of three to seven step-by-
`P
`step exercises. Every book-based lesson includes
`a corresponding video lesson (see ~~~;~a~:~ ~), in
`which I introduce the key concepts you'll need
`to know to complete the exercises. Best of all,
`every exercise isproject-based, culminating in an
`actual finished document worthy of your labors
`(see ~i~t~~~ ?).The exercises include insights and
`context throughout, so you'll know not only what
`to do but, just as important, why you're doing it.
`My sincere hope is that you'll find the experience
`entertaining, informative, and empowering.
`
`All the sample files required to perform the
`exercises are included on the DVD-ROM at the
`back of this book. The DVD also contains the
`video lessons. (This is a data DVD, not a video
`DVD. It won't work in a set-top device; it works
`only with a computer.) Don't lose or destroy this
`DVD. It is as integral a part of your learning
`experience as the pages in this book. Together,
`the book, sample files, and videos form a single
`comprehensive training experience.
`
`Start with a file...
`
`follow the steps...
`
`and end with an effect you're proud of.

`
`The main prerequisite to using Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One
`is having Photoshop Elements 4 installed on your Microsoft Win-
`do~~vs-based PC. You may have purchased Photoshop Elements as
`a stand-alone package (see ~~~,~.~.r~ 3) or as part of a bundle that in-
`cludes Photoshop Premiere Elements. Photoshop Elements 4 also
`ships for free with some brands of scanners and digital cameras.

`
`Any computer that meets the minimum requirements for
`Photoshop Elements 4 also meets the requirements for using
`Photoshop Elements 4 One-nn-One. Assuming you own a
`PC, you'll need an Intel Pentium III, 4, or Centrino proces-
`sor, 800MHz or faster, running Windows XP ~~vith Service
`Pack 2 or better.
`
`As if that's not enough, your computer must also meet the fol-
`lowing minimum requirements:
`
`• 256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
`
`• l.1GB of free hard disk space (900MB for Elements and 200NIB
`for the One-on-One project and video application files)
`
`• Color monitor with 16-bit color video card
`
`s 1024-by-768-pixel monitor resolution
`
`• IVTicrosoft DirectX 9-compatible display driver
`
`• DVD-ROM drive
`
`To play the videos, you will need Apple's Quicklime Player software
`version 5.0.2 or later. (Quicklime offers superior playback func-
`tions, ~~hich is why I choose it over the Windows Media Player.)
`Many computers come equipped v~~ith Quicklime; if yours does
`not, you will need to install the free Quicklime Player using the
`link provided on the DVD included with this book.
`
`Finally, you'll need to install the One-on-One project files and video
`software from the DVD that accompanies this book, as explained
`in the next section.

`

`Photoshop Elements 4 One-on-One is designed to function as an
`integrated. training environment. Therefore, before embarking on
`the lessons and exercises, you must first install a handful of files
`onto your computer's hard drive. These are:
`• QuickTime Player software (if it is not already installed)
`• All sample files used in the exercises (1301viB in al])
`
`• Total Training video training software
`
`• Nearly 100 custom layer styles, which you'll be using through-
`out the exercises in this book
`
`All these files are provided on the DVD that accompanies this book.

`• A moment later, up comes the 1 Install Les-

`a folder called Lesson Files-PE4 1on1 on your computer's
`desktop. You'll need this folder to complete the exercises
`in this book. The desktop is the most convenient location
`for the lesson files, but if you'd like to put them elsewhere,
`click the Browse button and specify a location.
`
`• Click the Install button. A progress bar tells you that the
`installer is v~~riting a total of 115 files. A few moments later,

`
`• At the 2 Install Deke's Presets screen, click the Install but-

`Photoshop Elements 4's Presets folder. Click OK when this
`brief process completes. The styles will load the next time
`you start Elements' Editor workspace.
`
`• At the 3 Install Training Application screen, click the Install
`button one last time. This installs the software required to
`run the video training. After a few seconds of progress bar,

`lation. Click OK.

`• At the final screen, click the Finish button to return to the

`
`You should see a new folder called Lesson Files-PE4 1on1 on

`Congratulations, you and I are now in sync, and you're ready to

`
`. ~:' ~ ~ ..n ~—
`
`At the outset of each book-based lesson, I ask you to play the com-
`panionvideo lesson from the DVD-ROM. Ranging from 9 to nearly
`19 minutes apiece, these video lessons introduce key concepts that
`make more sense when first seen in action.
`
`Produced in concert with the computer training pioneers at Total
`Training, the video lessons are not traditional DVD movies. They're
`much better. A standard NTSC movie on DVD is limited to 720-
`by-480 non-square pixels, of which only 720-by-240 update at a
`time (an antiquated and generally unfortunate phenomenon kno~~vn
`~ls interlacing). We have no such restrictions. Our movies play at
`resolutions as high as 960-by-540 pixels (see ~~~'i~~~x~ ~ ~~) on the next
`gage}, and every pixel updates 30 times a second, with no interlac-
`il~~. The result is a picture that approaches the quality of HDTV.
`;It the video looks smaller than you might expect on your screen,
`bc~~r in mind that a computer monitor packs in far more pixels than
`a 5~anc~ard TV.) Total Training employs state-of-the-art capture
`techn<~logy and gold-standard Sorenson compression to pack these
`~,-ivic~, le ible videos into a trim file that plays smoothly, even on
`~l~e:~-f~io~~el computers. This is video training at its finest.

`Each of the dozen lessons conforms to a consistent structure designed
`to impart skills and understanding through a regimen of practice and
`dialog. As you build your projects, I explain why you're performing
`the steps and «~hy Photoshop Elements works the way it does.
`Each lesson begins with a broad topic overview. Turn the first page
`of each lesson, and you'll find a section called "About This Lesson,"
`which lists the skills you'll learn and directs you to the video-based
`introduction.
`Next come the step-bar-step exercises, in which I ~~valk you
`through some of Elements' most powerful and essential
`image editing features. A DVD icon, like the one on the
`right, appears whenever I ask you to open a file from the Lesson
`Files-PE4 1on1 folder that you installed on your computer's hard
`drive. To make my directions crystal clear, command and option
`names appear in bold type (as in, "choose the Open command").
`Figure references appear in ~~;~c~~~~:c~ t>r~~~. More than 600 full-color,
`generously sized images diagram key steps in your journey so you're
`never left scratching your head, puzzling over what to do next. And
`when I refer you to another step or section, I tell you the exact page
`number to go to. (Shouldn't every book?)
