`middle m., the central portion of the inferior m. which contains
`the pericardium and its contents and the phrenic nerves and

`lies between the pericardium and the vertebral
`column, below the level of the Ty; intervertebral disc. It contains
`the descending aorta, thoracic duct, esophagus, azygos veins, and
`vagus nerves. SYN m. posterius, postmediastinum.
`m. poste’rius, sYN posterior m.
`superior m., that part lying above,i.e., above the pericardium; it
`contains the arch of the aorta and the vessels arising from it, the
`brachiocephalic veins, and upper portion of the superior vena
`cava, the trachea, the esophagus, the thoracic duct, the thymus,
`and the phrenic, vagus, cardiac, and left recurrent
`laryngeal
`nerves. SYN m. superius.
`m.supe’rius, SYN superior m.
`m.tes’tis [NA], a mass of fibrous tissue continuous with the
`tunica albuginea, projecting into the testis from its posterior
`border. syN corpus highmori, corpus highmorianum, Highmore’s
`body, septum oftestis.
`me-di-ate.
`1 (mé’dé-it). Situated between; intermediate. 2 (mé’
`dé-at). To effect something by means of an intermediary sub-
`stance, as in complement-mediated phagocytosis. [L. mediatus,

`me-di-a-tion (mé-dé-a’shiin). The action of an intermediary sub-
`stance (mediator).
`me-di-a-tor (mé’dé-a-ter, -t6r). An intermediary substance or
