`PRO BASKETBALL; McHale and ThompsonEnterHall of Fame With 3
`Others
`
`By MIKE WISE OCT.2, 1999
`
`In one cornerof the hotel ballroom, a smiling Kevin McHale doled out a healthy
`supply of one-liners, including, "I used to havepictures of Bill Walton on mywall as
`a kid, he's so old." Across the room, an introspective John Thompsonsaid he would
`probably be rememberedfor "things that have kept me out of the Hall of Fame."
`McHale, whoserepertory of post moveshelped bring the Boston Celtics three
`championshipsin the 1980's, and Thompson, whofor 27 years was a domineering
`sideline presence at Georgetown University, took divergent pathsto the Springfield
`Civic Center tonight. Carefree or controversial, their contributions to the game
`earned them enshrinementin the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, along
`with Wayne Embry,Billie Moore andthelate Fred Zollner.
`Thompson, whoresigned from coaching at Georgetown on Jan. 8 with a record
`of 596-239, won one nationaltitle and turned Georgetown into a perennial power by
`relying almost exclusively on black players. Beyond coachingeightfirst-round draft
`choices, 75 of 77 players who remained at Georgetown for four years under
`Thompsonreceived their degrees. His legacy also includes a hard-line stance on the
`unfairness of standardized tests by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, an
`issue the N.C.A.A. recently gave credenceto, and a disappointing bronze medal as
`the enach of the 1088 Olvmnic team

`seasons. He madethe All-Star team seven times and played on whatis generally
`regardedasthebest frontline in league history with Larry Bird and Robert Parish--
`a threesomethat wonthree N.B.A.titles, nine division championshipsand six
`conferencetitles.
`
`Thompson and Embry -- who werebackupsfor Bill Russell during their playing
`days -- and McHale becamethe 26th, 27th and 28th Celtics to be enshrined.
`Embry,the five-time All-Star and N.B.A. executive, was honoredlast night as a
`contributor; Moore was a women's coaching pioneer who wonnational
`championshipsat Cal-State Fullerton and U.C.L.A., and Zollner wasthePistons'
`patriarch and longest-tenured ownerof an original N.B.A. team.
`Embry seemed the mostaffected by the induction, calling the occasion "the
`happiest day of mylife." The 62-year-old president of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who
`last season handedover the general managerduties to Jim Paxson, wasthefirst
`African-American to hold a general managerpost in any sport whenhe washired by
`the Milwaukee Bucksin 1972,after his 11-year career ended.
`Zollner, who died in 1982at the ageof 81, wasthefirst ownerto hire a bench coach
`and oneofthefirst to sign an African-American player.
