`
`This invention relates to a software downloading device for telecommunications
`terminal, such as mobile radiophone forcellular network, cordless phoneorfixed
`terminal in an integrated services digital network. These terminals have some char-
`acteristics in common: microprocessor which performs the main functions required
`
`for their operation.
`The software program executed by cach of these terminals must be able to evolve
`with time in order to: either correct software anomalies, improve the terminal opera-
`tion, provide new services to subscribers, follow the changes made to telecommuni-
`cation network technical specifications, or be matched to various networks where
`different software programs needto be executed, when a terminal is moved to another
`
`country for instance,
`Significant difficulties are encountered when changing the software program cx-
`ecuted by a terminal. The software is typically stored ina ROM. To changea soft-
`ware programil is necessary lo return the terminals to a Companybranch for
`replacement of someof the terminal’s components. Therefore, each terminal is una-
`vailadle to the user for a certain period of time. These operations are therefore costly
`to the network operator. The purpose of the invention is to propose a device climi-
`nating these drawbacks.
`In accordance with the invention, a software downloading device for tclecom-
`munication terminal connected to a telecommunication network via a conventional
`
`interface, called network connection interface, the said terminal being fitted with a
`microprocessor which controls the operation of the said terminal by executing a soft-
`ware program, called operating software, is characterised in that it
`is fitted with:
`program to a RAM.
`The device thus featured makes it possible to change the operating software of
`
`a telecommunication terminal, cach time new software is required for the reasons
`
`listed above. Device and downloading costs arc minimal, it is therefore possible to
`
`use it for terminals sold in very large quantities.
`Preferably, the downloading interface is made up of the conventional interface
`connecting the terminal to the telecommunication network, the software to be down-
`loaded being forwarded by the said network via the conventional interface.
`The device thus featured has the advantage of being quite simple, since there is
`
`no need to add anotherinterface.
`
`Preferably, the downloading interface is made up of an interface dedicateu to
`
`15
`
`20
`
`25
`
`downloading, the software to be downloaded being forwarded by means other than

`
`the conventional means used to forward information to the terminal. The device thus
`
`featured has the advantage of providing for software downloading entirely inde-
`pendent from the telecommunication network to which the terminal is usually con-
`nected, this eliminates any constraint imposed by the latter, such as limitation of the
`flow of information transmitted for downloading, or occupancyof a network trans-
`mission channel during all the time required for software downloading.
`Preferably, the device includes several RAMs, andis fitted with some means of
`write-selecting one of these RAMs, to downloada different software program in cach
`of these RAMs, and read-selecting one of (hese RAMs, to execute one of these soft-
`
`ware programs in the microprocessor.
`The device thus featured makes it possible Lo change the operating software
`
`without having to downloadcach time. Matching a radiophone or cordless phone to
`a network changeis therefore simplified. Matching consists only of selecting one of
`the memories, if the software corresponding to the arca in which the terminal is lo-
`
`cated had already been downloaded.
`In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, embodiments
`
`thereof will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in which:
`Figures |
`to 3 respectively represent the block diagrams of three examples of
`radiophone, respectively including three examples of implementation of the device in
`accordance with the invention.
`
`Figures 4 and 5 respectively represent the block diagrams of two cxamples of
`fixed terminals in an integrated services digital network, respectively including two
`
`examples of implementation of the device in accordance with tae invention.
`
`Radiophone (9) shownin Figure I
`
`is fitted with: a first RAM ({), a second RAM
`
`(2), a ROM (3) storing the downloading software, a microprocessor(4) and a radio
`
`interface (5). All these devices are interconnected via a bus. Radiophone (9)is linked
`
`by radio to a base station (8) connected to a radiotelephone network (7). Radio
`
`interface (5) is a conventional interface enabling the radiophone to communicate with
`base station (8), bul it is also used to download an operating software program into
`one of the two RAMS (1) and (2). Downloading operations are performed by
`microprocessor (4) by executing the downloading software stored in ROM (3).
`
`25
`
`Since two RAMs(1 and 2) are available,it is possible to store two different
`software programs which may, for instance, correspondto the current applicable
`software and to another which will replace the previous one at a sct date. Orthe two

`
`software programs correspondto two different network types, operating in different
`countries.
`
`Ofcourse, this example is notlimiting, as it is possible to provide for a larger
`number of RAMsif more than two different software programs need to be used due
`
`to network variety.
`Radiophone (9) being fitted with several RAMs (1 and 2), some means are pro-
`vided to write-select one of these RAMs in order to downloada different software
`
`program in each of them, other means are provided to read-select one of the se RAMs
`in order to run only one of the software programs.
`
`The means used to write-sclect one of these RAMsconsist mainly of a micro-
`
`the downloading software stored in ROM (3) or
`processor(4) controlled either by:
`by a module provided in cach operating software.
`Whenno operating software is loaded in the RAMS, write-select is controlled by
`microprocessor (4) in accordance with the downloading software instructions. Fur-
`
`thermore, the downloading software supplies some instructions to allow the
`
`radiophone to set-up a radio link, then download a software program via this link.
`The downloading software programis called into execution cither by a message
`supplicd by network (7), or by a user’s commandentered from the keypadintegrated
`to the radiophone (9) not shown,
`
`Selection of the software to be run for normal operation, ic. read-selection of one
`
`of the two RAMS,is controlled cither by a message sent by network (7) or by a
`
`command issued by the user.
`Each operating software includes a module to acknowledge: a message from
`network (7) or a user’s command, and the identity of the soflware eventually stored
`
`in RAMs(2) and(3), in order to determine which RAM must be read or write se-
`lected.
`
`The radio interface, defined by the Group Special Mobile of the Conference
`
`Europeenne des Telecommunications, provides for data transmission channels be-
`
`tween the network and mobile radiophones for a point-to-point transmission or gen-
`
`cral broadcast. These chnnels admit a bit rate of up to 9.6 kbits per second.
`
`General broadcast can be used to simultaneously update the software in an en-
`tire fleet of radiophones. Conversely, point-to-point transmission can be used to
`download in a specific radiophone entering an area serviced by a network requiring
`
`execution of an operating software not yct stored in one of the radiophone RAMs.

`Downloadingis started upon the initiative of the network, after analysis of a
`parameter, called “Classmark Update”, contained in a message, called “Loc Upd Re-
`quest”, sent by the mobile radiophone to initialise a localisation procedure whenit
`enters a new zone. This parameter indicates the radiophoneversion.
`It also indicates
`whether this radiophone is downloadable and which type of downloadingit is likely
`to accept: partial, for certain functions, or total, for all functions exceptlocalisation
`and downloading. Network (7) starts downloading by sending to radiophone(9) a
`radio message interpreted by microprocessor(4) by executing the appropriate module
`of the operating software whichis being executed at the moment underconsideration.
`Once downloading is completed, the localisation procedureis finished. The
