`The software program executed by each of these terminals must be able to evolve
`with time in order to: either correct software anomalies, improve the terminal opera—
`
`tion, provide new services to subscribers, follow the changes made to telecommuni-
`
`cation network technieal specifications, or be matched to various networks where
`
`different software programs need to be executed, when a terminal is moved to another

`country for instance.
`Significant difficulties are encountered when changing the software program ex«
`
`ccuted by a terminal. The software is typically stored in a ROM. To change a soft-
`
`ware program it is nceessary to return the terminals to a Company branch for
`
`replacement ofsome of the tern'iinal’s components. Therefore, each terminal is una-
`
`vaila'ole to the user for a certain period of time. These operations are therefore costly
`
`to the network operator. The purpose of the invention is to propose a device elimi-
`
`nating these drawbacks.

`.
`
`In accordance with the invention. a software downloading device for telecom—
`munication terminal connected to a teleeommunication network via a conventional
`interface, called network connection interface, the said terminal being fitted with a
`
`503°?
`
`microprocessor which controls the operation of the said terminal by executing a soft-
`ware program, called operating software, is characterised in that it
`is fitted with:

`
`program to a RAM.
`The device thus featured makes it possible to change the operating software of
`a telecommunication terminal, each time new software is required for the reasons
`
`listed above. Deviee and downloading costs are minimal, it is therefore possible to
`
`use it for terminals sold in very large quantities.
`
`Preferably, the downloading interface is made up of the conventional interface
`
`connecting the terminal to the telecommunication network, the software to be down-
`
`loaded being Forwarcied by the said network via the conventional interface.
`
`25
`
`The device thus featured has the advantage of being quite simple, since there is
`
`no need to add another interface.
`
`Preferably, the downloading interface is made up of an interface dedicated to
`
`downloading, the software to be downloaded being forwarded by means other than

`
`

`
`the conventional means used to forward information to the terminal. The device thus
`
`featured has the advantage of providing for software downloading entirely inde-
`
`pendent from the telecommunication network to which the terminal is usually eon-
`
`neeted, this eliminates any constraint imposed by the latter, such as limitation of the
`
`flow of information transmitted for downloading, or occupancy of a network trans-
`
`missiou channel during all the time required for software downloading.
`
`Preferably, the device includes several RAMs, and is fitted with some means of
`
`write-selecting one of these RA Ms, to download a different software program in each
`
`of these RA Ms, and read-selecting one of these RA Ms, to execute one of these soft-
`
`ware programs in the microprocessor.
`
`The device thus featured makes it possible to change the operating software
`
`without having to download each lime. Matching a radiophone or cordless phone to
`
`a network change is therefore simplified. Matching consists only of selecting one of
`
`the memories, if the software corresponding to the area in which the terminal is lo-
`
`cated had already been dowuloaded.
`
`In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, embodiments
`
`thereof will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in which:
`
`Figures l
`
`to 3 respectively represent the block diagrams of three examples of
`
`radiophone, respectively including three examples of implementation of the device in
`accordance with the invention.
`
`Figures 4 and 5 respectively represent the block diagrams of two examples of
`
`fixed terminals in an integrated services digital network. respectively including two
`
`examples of implementation of the device in accordance with the invention.
`
`Radiophone (9) shown in Figure l
`
`is fitted with: a first RAM (1), a second RAM
`
`(2), a ROM (3) storing the downloading software, a microprocessor (4) and a radio
`
`interface (5). All these devices a re interconnected via a bus. Radiophone (9) is linked
`
`by radio to a base station (8) connected to a radiotelephone network (1). Radio
`
`interface (5) is a conventional interface enabling the rad iophone to communicate with
`
`base station (8), but it is also used to download an operating software program into
`
`one of the two RAMS (t) and (2). Downloading operations are performed by
`
`microprocessor (4} by executing the downloading software stored in ROM (3},
`
`25
`
`Since two RAMs (l and 2) are available. it is possible to store two different
`
`software programs which may, for instance, correspond to the current applicable
`
`software and to another which will replace the previous one at a set date. Or the two

`
`
`4
`
`software programs correspond to two different network types, operating in different
`countries.
`
`Of course, this example is not limiting, as it is possible to provide for a larger
`
`number of RAMS if more than two different software programs need to be used due
`
`to network variety.
`
`Radiophone (9) being fitted with several RAMs (l and 2), some means are pro-
`vided to write-select one of these RAMs in order to download a different software
`
`program in each ofthem, other means are provided to read~select one of the so RAMs
`
`in order to run only one of the software programs.
`
`The means used to write-select one of these RA Ms consist mainiy of a micro-
`
`processor (4) controlled either by:
`
`the downloading software stored in ROM (3) or
`
`by a mod ule provided in each operating software.
`
`When no operating software is loaded in the RAMs, write-select is controlled by
`
`microprocessor (4) in accordance with the downloading software instructions. Fur-
`
`thermore, the downloading software supplies some instructions to allow the
`
`radiophone to set-up a radio link, then download a software program via this link.
`
`The downloading software program is called into execution either by a message
`
`supplied by network (7), or by a user’s command entered from the keypad integrated
`
`to the rad iophone (9) not shown.
`
`Selection of the software to be run for normal operation. ie. read-selection of one
`
`of the two RAMs, is controlled either by a message sent by network (7) or by a
`
`command issued by the user.
`
`Each operating software includes a module to acknowledge: a message from
`
`network (7) or a user’s command, and the identity of the software eventually stored
`
`in RAMs (2) and (3), in order to determine which RAM must be read or write so-
`looted.
`
`The radio interface, defined by the Group Special Mobile of the Conference
`
`Europeenne des Telecon'imunications, provides for data transmission channels be“
`
`tween the network and mobile radiophones for a point-to-point transmission or gen-
`
`eral broadcast. These ehnnels admit a bit rate of up to 9.6 kbits per second.
`
`General broadcast can be used to simultaneously update the software in an en-
`
`25
`
`tire fleot of radiophones. Conversely, point-to-point transmission can be used to
`
`downioad in a specific radiophone entering an area serviced by a network requiring
`
`execution of an operating software not yet stored in one of the radiophone RAMs.
