` Your additional question: Was everyone able to search the Dutch Central Catalog (NCC)? The answer is ‘yes’, but not yet
`in 1988.
` Since 1983, the Dutch Central Catalog has functioned as an computerized system the Dutch libraries could use to
`request books from each other. From the early nineties, the NCC has been available to all library users online. Since that
`time, the university libraries have been entering keywords. The UB [University Library] of Amsterdam already did this
`earlier, but this input did not become visible in the NCC until 1995. The administrative catalog (the Common
`Computerized Library System (GGC)) shows that the UB of the UvA [Amsterdam University] allocated the keywords of
`the thesis of Van Gils, probably in 1994, but they were only visible in the NCC from 1995. Based on the allocated
`keywords - Data transmission, Errors, Correction, Coding theory; Theses (type) – the thesis could have been found by
`subject from 1995! I cannot assess how likely this is in practice. Retraceable by Dewey-code or UDC is not obvious. That
`classification is too broad and would lead to too many hits.
`In the GGC I can also see that other libraries have not allocated local keywords (local = only visible in their own local
`catalog), apart from the UB of TU [University of Technology] Delft; but I do not know what year that happened. The
`following keywords were used in Delft: coding theory, communication theory, error-correcting codes, information theory,
`dissertation.
` I apologize for my lengthy technical explanation. I consulted a few former colleagues who were closely involved in the
`subject unlocking at the time. I hope to have informed you sufficiently.

`You would like to know when the thesis below became available at the University Library of the UvA.
`Unfortunately, we cannot check that exactly. It was definitely available in 1994, but we cannot be sure if that was
`already the case earlier. Why do you want to know this so precisely?
` The National Catalog can tell which libraries the thesis can be found in, and can also show you which keywords and
`codes were used to unlock the subject. So apart from the author’s name, the subject was also unlocked: by code (Dewey,
`UDC, Unesco) and by keyword. (Available in Amsterdam, Delft, KB [Royal Library], Eindhoven, RUG [University of
`Groningen], Leiden, Tilburg, Utrecht.)
`Refer to the print screen. The National Catalog already existed in 1988.

` Dank voor uw reactie. Uw antwoord verheldert veel.
` Uw aanvullende vraag: kon iedereen zoeken in de Nederlandse Centrale Catalogus (NCC)? Het antwoord is ‘ja’, maar nog
`niet in 1988.
` Sinds 1983 werkt de Nederlandse Centrale Catalogus als geautomatiseerd systeem waarmee de Nederlandse
`bibliotheken bij elkaar boeken konden opvragen. Vanaf begin jaren negentig is de NCC voor alle bibliotheekgebruikers
`online beschikbaar. Sinds die periode werden door de universiteitsbibliotheken trefwoorden ingevoerd. De UB van
`Amsterdam deed dit al eerder, maar deze invoer werd pas vanaf 1995 in de NCC zichtbaar. In de administratieve
`catalogus (het Gemeenschappelijk Geautomatiseerd Bibliotheeksysteem (GGC) kan ik zien dat de UB van de UvA de
`trefwoorden van het proefschrift van Van Gils heeft toegekend, waarschijnlijk in 1994, maar dus pas in de NCC zichtbaar
`vanaf 1995. Op basis van de toegekende trefwoorden - Datatransmissie, Fouten, Correctie , Coderingstheorie ;
`Proefschriften (vorm) - zou het proefschrift op onderwerp gevonden kunnen worden, vanaf 1995! Ik kan niet
`beoordelen hoe waarschijnlijk dit in de praktijk is. Vindbaar op Dewey-code of UDC ligt niet voor de hand. Die
`classificatie is te ruim en zou te veel treffers opleveren.
`In de GGC kan ik ook zien, dat andere bibliotheken geen lokale trefwoorden hebben toegekend (lokaal = alleen zichtbaar
`in de eigen lokale catalogus), behalve de UB van de TU Delft; in welk jaar dat is gebeurd, dat weet ik niet. Van Delft
`komen deze lokale trefwoorden: coderingstheorie, communicatietheorie, foutencorrigerende codes, informatietheorie,
`dissertatie.
` Excuus voor mijn omslachtige technische toelichting. Ik heb enkele oud-collega’s geraadpleegd, die destijds dichtbij de
`onderwerpsontsluiting betrokken waren. Ik hoop u hiermee voldoende te hebben geïnformeerd.

`Dank U wel voor uw hulp. De reden dat ik deze vragen stel is dat ik probeer aan te tonen dat een oud patent/octrooi
`destijds niet zo nieuw/vernieuwend was als gedacht, omdat de auteur van dit proefschrift bepaalde technologiën heeft
`gepubliceerd. Maar, onder bepaalde specifieke regels telt een proefschrift alleen als een officiële publicatie als het
`publiek (en niet, b.v., alleen studenten) de mogelijkheid hadden om dit werk te vinden in een bibliotheek (door te
`zoeken naar het onderwerp, niet naar de auteursnaam).
` Ik heb een vraag over the Nationale Catalogus: kan en kon iedereen daar in zoeken? Of is/was dit exclusief voor
`medewerkers van de universiteit of voor studenten?

` Via omwegen belandde uw vraag bij mij. Sinds 1990 werk ik bij de bibliotheek.
`U wilt weten wanneer onderstaand proefschrift beschikbaar is gekomen in de Universiteitsbibliotheek van de UvA.
`Helaas kunnen wij dat niet precies nagaan. In ieder geval was het in 1994 beschikbaar, maar of dit ook al eerder het
`geval was weten we niet zeker. Waarom wilt u dit zo exact weten?
` In de Nationale Catalogus vindt u in welke bibliotheken het proefschrift vindbaar is, en daar kunt u ook zien met welke
`trefwoorden en codes de onderwerpsontsluiting is gebeurd. Het proefschrift is dus behalve op auteursnaam ook op
`onderwerp ontsloten: op code (Dewey, UDC, Unesco) en op trefwoord. (Aanwezig in Amsterdam, Delft, KB, Eindhoven,

`publicatie-datum is typisch de dag dat het proefschrift verdedigd is (dat was 5 januari 1988).
