`Cc: Subject: FW: Availability of an old thesis
`Dear Otto,
` I assume you are a colleague of Ximena Solano Suarez, because she has questions about this thesis too. If not, I will
`respond to her as well.
`
`From which date was this thesis available at the library? (not the official publication date of 01/01/1988, but
`when physical copies were actually available to borrow etc.). The official publication date is usually the day the
`thesis was defended (which was January 5, 1988).
`>> The day after obtaining the degree, the printed thesis was added to the collection, therefore January 6, 1988.
`The thesis was sent to the specialist librarian first to add codes (TUE [University of Technology Eindhoven] codes,
`in this case APA (= thesis Eindhoven), APD, (= thesis in the field of Information Science), DNH (subject = Coding
`theory).
`Then it was returned to the cataloging department to label the book. This process takes a few weeks
`• Are any librarians from that time (approx. 1990) still working there? Preferably from the mathematics &
`information science library?
`>> No
`I do not understand your intention behind this question
`• Can anyone (e.g. the above-mentioned librarian) describe how a thesis was filed then? Particularly: At the time,
`was a code used specifically for the subject of the thesis or would I have been able to find it then just using the
`author’s name? Would someone have been able to find this thesis without knowing the author’s name?
`>> We were transitioning from microfiches to “digital” at that time. This description was never indexed on
`microfiche. The description was entered using a “dumb terminal”. Over the years, a few terminals entered the
`library. Around 2000, we transitioned to a first web version of OPAC.
` We receive questions about theses from time to time, but your questions are new to me. I am curious about the reason.
` Please do not contact me over the phone, but via e-mail.
` Kind regards,
` John Engels

`FW: Beschikbaarheid van een oud proefschrift
`Subject:
`Beste Otto,
`reden.
` Graag geen telefonisch contact, maar per email.
` Met vriendelijke groeten,
` John Engels
