`This invention relates to a software downloading device for telecommunications
`terminal, such as mobile radiophone for cellular network, cordless phone or fixed
`terminal in an integrated services digital network. These terminals have some char-
`acteristics in common: microprocessor which performs the main functions required
`for their operation.
`The software program executed by each of these terminals must be able to evolve
`with time in order to: either correct software anomalies, improve the terminal opera-
`tion, provide new services to subscribers, follow the changes made to telecommuni-
`cation network technical specifications, or be matched to various networks where
`different software programs need to be executed, when a terminal is moved to another
`country for instance.
`Significant difficulties are encountered when changing the software program cx-
`10 ecuted by a terminal. The software is typically stored in n ROM. To change a soft-
`ware program it is necessary to return the terminals to a Company branch for
`replacement of some of the terminal's components. Therefore, each terminal is una-
`vailable to the user for a certain period of time. These operations are therefore costly
`to the network operator. The purpose of the invention is to propose a device elimi-
`nating these drawbacks.
`In accordance with the invention, n software downloading device for telecom-
`munication terminal connected to a telecomi munication network via a conventional
`interface, called network connection interface, the said terminal being fitted with a
`microprocessor which controls the operation of the said terminal by executing a soft-
`ware program, called operating software, is characterised in that it is fitted with:

`The device thus featured makes it possible to change the operating software of
`a telecommunication terminal, each time new software is required for the reasons
`listed above. Device and downloading costs are minimal, it is therefore possible to
`use it for terminals sold in very large quantities.
`Preferably, the downloading interface is made up of the conventional interface
`connecting the terminal to the telecommunication network, the software to be down-
`loaded being forwarded by the said network via the conventional interface.
`The device thus featured has the advantage of being quite simple, since there is
`no need to add another interface.

`the conventional means used to forward information to the terminal. The device thus
`featured has the advantage of providing for software downloading entirely inde-
`pendent from the telecommunication network to which the terminal is usually con-
`nected, this eliminates any constraint imposed by the latter, such as limitation of the
`flow of information transmitted for downloading, or occupancy of a network trans-
`mission channel during all the time required for software downloading.
`Preferably, the device includes several RAMs, and is fitted with some means of
`write-selecting one of these RAMs, to download a different software program in each
`of these RAMs, and read-selecting one of these RAMs, to execute one of these soft-
`ware programs in the microprocessor.
`The device thus featured makes it possible to change the operating software
`without having to download each time. Matching a radiophone or cordless phone to
`a network change is therefore simplified. Matching consists only of selecting one of
`Sthe memories, if the software corresponding to the area in which the terminal is lo-
`cated had already been downloaded.
`In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, embodiments
`thereof will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in which:
`Figures 1 to 3 respectively represent the block diagrams of three examples of

`accordance with the invention.

`tire fleet of radiophones. Conversely, point-to-point transmission can be used to
`download in a specific radiophone entering an area serviced by a network requiring
`execution of an operating software not yet stored in one of the radiophone RAMs.

`Downloading is started upon the initiative of the network, after analysis of a
`parameter, called "Classmark Update", contained in a message, called "Loc Upd Re-
`quest", sent by the mobile radiophone to initialise a localisation procedure when it
`enters a new zone. This parameter indicates the radiophone version. It also indicates
`whether this radiophone is downloadable and which type of downloading it is likely
`to accept: partial, for certain functions, or total, for all functions except localisation
`and downloading. Network

`1 Downloading software production is within the capabilities of the man skilled in
`the art. The section designed to download to the RAMs is similar to the bootstrap
`software used to load a software diskette into the main memory of a computer. The
`section designed to set-up a radio link is a simplified version of a conventional soft-
`ware controlling the operation of a radiophone.
`This first ,ariant of a device in accordance with the invention has the advantage
`15 of being simple and inexpensive, since the radiophone needs only be fitted with at
`least one RAM and one ROM storing the downloading software, without additional
`interface with regard to a conventional radiophone. Several terminals can be down-
`loaded simultaneously, allowing part or all of the terminals in the radiotelephone
`netwoik to be updated in a single operation. It is therefore easy to distribute software
`upgrades or to entirely replace the software.
`Figure 2 represents the block diagram of radiophone (10) fitted with a second
`example of implementation of the device in accordance with the invention.

`This invention relates to a software downloading device for telecommunications
`terminal, such as mobile radiophone for cellular network, cordless phone or fixed
`terminal in an integrated services digital network. These terminals have some char-
`acteristics in common: microprocessor which performs the main functions required
`for their operation.
`The software program executed by each of these terminals must be able to evolve
`with time in order to: either correct software anomalies, improve the terminal opera-
`tion, provide new services to subscribers, follow the changes made to telecommuni-
`cation network technical specifications, or be matched to various networks where
`different software programs need to be executed, when a terminal is moved to another
`country for instance.
`Significant difficulties are encountered when changing the software program cx-
`10 ecuted by a terminal. The software is typically stored in n ROM. To change a soft-
`ware program it is necessary to return the terminals to a Company branch for
`replacement of some of the terminal's components. Therefore, each terminal is una-
`vailable to the user for a certain period of time. These operations are therefore costly
`to the network operator. The purpose of the invention is to propose a device elimi-
`nating these drawbacks.
`In accordance with the invention, n software downloading device for telecom-
`munication terminal connected to a telecomi munication network via a conventional
`interface, called network connection interface, the said terminal being fitted with a
`microprocessor which controls the operation of the said terminal by executing a soft-
