`
`
`SUMMARY OF SERVICE ACTIVITIES
`Three factors have been instrumental in motivating my service activities. First, I am deeply committed to
`the idea that shared governance and service are integral parts of my role as an academic scientist. I began
`my career at Wellesley in the mid-1970’s, where the administration only paid lip service to this idea. As
`a junior faculty member, I made myself quite unpopular with that administration by successfully agitating
`for a more meaningful role for the faculty in academic planning and budgeting. So I suppose it was only
`natural that when I came to UCSF and found that these sorts of activities were not only welcomed but
`also encouraged that I began immediately to participate in a significant way. Second, UCSF and
`especially the School of Pharmacy represent what I believe is a unique combination of basic scientists and
`clinicians. I quickly found that working on committees with clinical colleagues provided me with a
`perspective that I never would have gained in a traditional chemistry department. Although we have
`different roles in contributing to the educational enterprise, I have found that I very much enjoy
`interacting with my clinical colleagues, especially in the School. They are simply great people who are
`fun to work with. And lastly, my deep and abiding commitment to education has guided my service
`efforts to focus on the Educational Policy Committee. This year will represent my twentieth year of
`service (although not continuous) as Chair of that group, which played a major role in implementing our
`complete curriculum revision of the mid-1990’s. After nine years as Chair, I took a sabbatical in 2004/05
`and found myself isolated and feeling disconnected from active involvement. So when Dean Koda-
`Kimble asked in June, 2006, if I would be willing to return as Chair and play a significant role in the
`School’s upcoming re-accreditation process, it didn’t take long to accept. After successfully negotiating
`the accreditation process in 2008, the EPC has undertaken a significant curriculum revision during the
`past two years. I stepped down as Chair this year so that Tina Brock could inject some new ideas into the
`curricular process. After serving under Tom James since 1993, I have also been honored to be asked by
`Jim Wells to continue as Vice Chair of the Department and to assume even greater responsibility for the
`Department’s contribution to the PharmD curriculum. In the past several years, I have also served as a
`member of the Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP), which I chaired for two years, as well as the
`Steering Committee for Academic Affairs Information Systems Initiatives and the Campus Academic
`Calendar Committee. These latter two groups represent initiatives arising from the Vice Provost of
`Academic Affairs Office.
