`Although these PDAs look

`has a different focus and config-

`Velo 1 is the most expandable.
`with a maximum RAM ceiling
`of 36MB. while the others top
`out at 8MB of RAM. To many
`this may sound like semicon»
`doctor overkill. but we envision
`complex database and commu-
`nication applications that may
`need this much memory.
`As far as software goes. each
`system also goes its own way.
`For example. the Cassiopeia
`comes with a financial calc-

`ulator that can help you with
`bond interest or mortgage paya
`merits. while the Mobiler
`adds a CD-ROM—based set of

`utilities for synchronizing data

`
`Positioned to ap-

`users who want
`
`highend features
`and are willing to
`pay a little extra,
`the Velo 1 costs
`5699. But it's Well
`
`worth the price because of its in-
`cluded array ofgoodies—from a
`built-in modem to its synchro-
`nization cradle—that are aimed
`
`at power-hungry users.
`Ready for the road the Vela 1
`measures 6.8» by 3.7- by 1-inch
`and weighs 13 ounces without its
`AC adapter but with two AA
`batteries installed. Like the
`MobilePro. the Velo 1 comes
`with 8MB of ROM; the Cas-
`siopeia comes with half as much.
`The oddball of the group, the
`Velo 1 uses a DRAM Mini Card
`
`slot for memory expansion of up
`to 36MB: there‘s also a flash
`
`memory Mini Card slot. Unlike
`the other two PDAs. the Velo 1
`itselfdwsn't have a PC Card slot.
`and for larger-scale expansion
`
`you need to use the external Type
`[1 PC Card bay. The system does
`have a serial port
`and an IrDA in-
`
`frared port.
`The sculpted Vela
`1 has easily the mast
`refined design of the
`bunch. To the left of
`
`its display is a pop-
`out toggle for an PJ-
`11 phone jack. mak-
`ing it the only one of the three to
`be communications-ready out of
`the box; the others require a PC
`Card modem to make a connec»

`the display is a small button,
`which when pushed lights the
`screen for added visibility The
`donmide ofthis communications
`
`equation is that with the modem

`ed. so plan on bringing the AC
`adapter along with you.
`Built around a MIPS Iii-3900

`Memo application, which al-
`lows the user to record brief

`fashion. As with the other two.
`the Vela 1'5 on-hoard speaker
`was barely adequate.
`Positioned as the power-
`user‘s hand-held computer, the
`Vela 1‘s $699 price includes a

`the fastest‘ most expandable.
