`
`DEVICE FOR ENHANCING OPERATION OF A GAME
`CONTROLLER AND METHOD OF USING THE SAME
`
`BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
`
`Field of the Invention:
`
`[0001]
`
`The invention relates to a device for enhancing operation of a game
`
`controller and a method of using the same whichallow the user of the device to
`
`manually control features of a game beyond those which are assigned to the usual
`
`buttons or keys without moving the user’s hand from the usual position.
`
`DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
`
`[0002]
`
`Prior art game controllers have buttons or keys which are depressed or
`
`otherwise actuated to carry out various movements within the game, such as
`
`controlling movements of a character on a computer screen, television or dedicated
`
`game screen. However, the limitations of the human hand require the user to
`
`release some buttons or keys to actuate others. This detracts from the user’s
`
`ability to play the game to the best of the user’s ability and can also lead to
`
`debilitating repetitive use injuries or medical conditions, such as so-called “Play
`
`Station Palm”or “Blackberry Finger.”
`
`BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
`
`[0003]
`
`It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device for
`
`enhancing operation of a game controller and a method of using the same, which
`

`

`F-9463
`
`overcome the above-mentioned disadvantagesof the heretofore-known devices
`
`and methods of this general type and which permit the user to control many more
`
`features of a game than would normally be possible while using the fingers of one
`
`hand.
`
`[0004] With the foregoing and other objects in view there is provided, in
`
`accordancewith the invention, a device for enhancing operation of a game
`
`controller, comprising at least one actuator cooperating with a game controller for
`
`adding functions to be controlled with parts of the hand other than the thumbs while
`
`using the thumbsfor other functions.
`
`[0005]
`
`In accordance with another feature of the invention, a so-called skin is
`
`placed onto partor all of the controller for permitting the additional functions
`
`according to the invention to be carried out.
`
`[0006]
`
`In accordance with a further feature of the invention, the tip or side of a
`
`finger, preferably the index fingers, is used to actuate the game controller.
`
`[0007]
`
`In accordance with an addedfeature of the invention, added functions
`
`such as walking, running, jumping, switching weapons, shooting and zooming can
`
`be controlled while keeping the thumbsin place on the standard buttons or keys.
`
`[0008]
`
`In accordance with an additional feature of the invention, the at least one
`
`actuator or lever is customizable by plastically deforming the actuator to fit the hand
`
`of a particular user.

`

`F-9463
`
`[0009]
`
`In accordance with yet another feature of the invention, levers, preferably
`
`with hinges, are provided for actuation by parts of the hand other than the thumb.
`
`[0010]
`
`In accordancewith yet a further feature of the invention, a line with
`
`tension adjustable for a given user is used to control a zoom function.
`
`[0011]
`
`In accordance with yet an added feature of the invention, an electronic
`
`trigger device is provided and connected to batteries stored in the game controller.
`
`[0012] With the objects of the invention in view, there is concomitantly provided
`
`a method for using a game controller, which comprises moving an actuator with
`
`parts of the hand other than the thumbs while using the thumbsfor other functions.
`
`[0013]
`
`Other features which are considered as characteristic for the invention
`
`are set forth in the appendedclaims.
`
`[0014]
`
`Although the invention is illustrated and described herein as embodiedin
`
`a device for enhancing operation of a game controller and a method of using the
`
`same, it is nevertheless not intended to be limited to the details shown, since
`
`various modifications and structural changes may be made therein without
`
`departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope and range of
`
`equivalents of the claims.

`
`DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
`
`[0029]
`
`Referring now to the figures of the drawing in detail and first, particularly,
`
`to Figs. 1-5C thereof, there is seen a Play Station 3 game controller A with a
`
`completely removable rubber or plastic skin B in place. The tip of the index finger is
`
`positioned undera lever C of the skin. The side of the index finger is undera lever
`
`D, so that the levers C and D can be actuated without using or moving the thumbs.
`
`A removable tapeEis attached to a trigger on the left. These features free up
`
`three fingers to provide a great playing advantage, while avoiding over-useinjuries.
`
`A line F extends to a lever for adjustment backwards for tensioning to the player's

`
`zoom, which can thus be activated without using the left index finger. A mere
`
`change ofthe user’s grip will slightly pull the line controlling the trigger to operate
`
`the left trigger. The triggers have hinges F2 and maybeplastically deformable, for
`
`instance due to wires running therethrough so asto fit a particular user’s hand.

`
`Fig. 6 showsan electronic push device or trigger for use with the Play
`
`Station 3 game controller or future game controllers. A motor A movesa lever B
`
`and pushesa button when the controller is tilted up or down. A sensorC is
`
`provided for sensing the tilt. Batteries for the electronic trigger are inserted in the
`
`front of the controller.
`
`[0031]
`
`The embodiment of the invention for use with the Xbox 360 game
`
`controller A is shown Figs. 7-11. A completely removable rubber or plastic skin B
`
`is placed over the controller. The tip of the index finger operates a lever C. The
`
`side of the index finger operates a lever D having hinges F2 and being plastically
`
`deformable, as described above. These features free up three fingers to provide a
`
`great playing advantage, while avoiding over-use injuries. Fig. 8 showsthat a
`
`removable tape E is attachedto a left trigger F and passes underneath as indicated
`
`by a brokenline G, for fixing the zoom in its selected position. Fig. 9 illustrates that
`
`thumbs no longer need to leave the analog keys or buttons, since a finger assumes
`
`the operation previously required of the thumb. Fig. 10 shows anotherview of the
`
`controller with the skin and the perspective view of Fig. 11 shows howthe lever
`
`tightens the string by pulling back.

`
`PROTECTING YOUR INVENTION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
`
`Since the rights granted by a U.S. patent extend only throughoutthe territory of the United States and have no
`effect in a foreign country, an inventor who wishes patent protection in another country must apply for a patent
`in a specific country or in regional patent offices. Applicants may wish to consider the filing of an international
`application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). An international (PCT) application generally has the same
`effect as a regular national patent application in each PCT-member country. The PCT process simplifies the filing
`of patent applications on the same invention in member countries, but does notresult in a grantof "an international

`patent" and doesnoteliminate the needof applicantsto file additional documents and fees in countries where patent
`protection is desired.
`
`Almost every country has its own patent law, and a person desiring a patent in a particular country must make an
`application for patent in that country in accordancewith its particular laws. Since the laws of many countries differ
`in various respects from the patent law of the United States, applicants are advised to seek guidance from specific
`foreign countries to ensure that patent rights are not lost prematurely.
`
`Applicants also are advised that in the case of inventions madein the United States, the Director of the USPTO must
`issue a license before applicants can apply for a patent in a foreign country. Thefiling of a U.S. patent application
`serves as a request for a foreign filing license. The application's filing receipt contains further information and
`guidance asto the status of applicant's license for foreign filing.
`
`Applicants may wish to consult the USPTO booklet, "General Information Concerning Patents”(specifically, the
`section entitled "Treaties and Foreign Patents") for more information on timeframes and deadlinesfor filing foreign
`patent applications. The guide is available either by contacting the USPTO Contact Center at 800-786-9199, or it
`can be viewed on the USPTO web
