`
`[PrhtAl'ltde: W203. by amends] As the use of muttipte fracture
`stimulafions in horizontal weibdres skyrocketed in recent years. adebate
`emerged overthe best completion method: open-hole bd drop orcased and
`cemented holes?
`
`It boils down to a question of whether mechanical packers or cement provide the
`best means of isolating between frac stages during mrfltipie completions in
`horizontal weibores.
`
`Murray Fteynoids. a veteran completions engneer with TAQA North Ltd.. looked
`at the athrantages and disadvantages of each system in a presentation at an
`Infocast tight oi conference in Calgary in September.
`
`The open-hole bai-drop system is typica‘y associated with Camry-based
`Packers Plus Energy Services Inc.. though a number at competitol also run
`simbar systems. A packeris set in the mama casing. uncemerled. In the case of
`the Pacters Ptus StackFRAc system. bats made of thermal-plastic material such
`as Teflon are dropped into the we! to shitt a steeve. isoiate the previous frac and
`open the next frac port up-hole.

`
`Other open-hole systems use a dart instead ofa bal to shift the sieeve. Others
`use swefiabie packers where an elastomereiement reacts with the welbore fluid
`or temperature to expand. thus creating a seal with the open-hole. Depending on
`conditions. it could take aweek or more for these to be set up in a weibore before
`afrac operation begins.
`Most of the fractured horizontaiwefl compleions in western Canada use open-
`hole packer-based systems, which may be the cheapest option.
`
`Professional The Barnett shale is cunentty aimost 10-1] per cent cased and cenented.

`
`menoids noted that early experiments with open-hole gave poorerresults from
`the standpoint of microseismic monitoring as we! as production performance.
`On the otherside of the debate are the advocates of flfly cemented Eners. These
`wees are typicaiy more expensive Aato complete. but aflow maxinum control of
`fracture placement. providing there is good Aacementing in the horizontal section.
`which can sometimes be achalenge.
`
`Listing the pros and cons of each system. Reynolds said the big advantage of the
`open-hoie packer system that it‘s a Agcontinuous frac process It can be done
`quickly if logistics flow everything to be located on site. "It you're pumping
`100.000 kiograms perfracture stage. you might not be able to d: itaii in one
`day.” he said. "But generaiy...you can do 15 fracsin aday. or more.‘r

`
`Other advantages include high pump rates and the fact that there‘s no trac fluid or
`proppam imit Also. Reynolds said open-hole completions mayenioy a stight cost
`advantage over cased and cemented was
`
`the
`Do the downside. one of the disadvantages of open-hate Agsystems
`number of fracintervds has historicatty been iimited to about 2:1 stages. Ay’But
`now mLfltiptier systems Mare becon'e‘ng available where we can frat: up to 60
`stages.” Am there may be fewerlimits Rain the number of stages. Reynolds
`conceded.
`
`Open-hate systems have less controi overfrac iength and frat: ptacement. he
`said. ”In tight as.
`in fight gas. fracture hatf-iength is everything.” Frac Aahatf-
`tength refels to the radiat distance from the weflbore to the outer tip of afracture.
`Aiso. he said seting the hydraulic pacters may create frac initiation points.
`
`If the bais aren‘t recovered. the operator may need to mit out ttte bags and seats.
`addng significant cost. However. Reynolds noted one vendor has retrievabte
`baar‘seat assembies.
`
`Looking at the pros and cons of the cased and cemented systems. Reynotds said
`two big advantages are longer trans and more control over where each frac
`initiates. He hefieves one of the biggest future innovations of cemean
`compietions wfl he the opportunity to use cemented frac ports. which can be
`shifted with a bad or ctfied tubing.
`
`"This is. I think. the future. titte've run a coupe of these. [We‘ve had] very good
`resutts in terms of fracture piatement and productivity." he said about cemented
`frac ports. which he caited a"potentiai breakthrough technoioy for contented
`compilations."
`
`He said cemented Ira: ports are cunentiy being used in retativetyshwow
`appicafions such as in Viking tight oi in Saskatchewan.
`
`Other new technoioges forcased-hoie fracisotation include composite bridge
`plugs that can be easfiy rrfled out Reynoids said Hafiburton Energy Services
`has a setf-removing bridge piug that can be set on a timer to explode into a pie of
`cerarric dust-"a may good way to remove bridge plug.”
`
`(in the downside. it takes Agionger to frac the sarrre number of intervals in a
`cased and cemented wefl than in an open-hose weft. This is because of the time it
`takes to perforate and the fact that it isn't a continuous process.
`”Peopie who are looking strictty at cost are going to probabty stick with bait-drop
`systems." Reynoids said. But if the operator and its service companies are adept-
`and don‘t encounter any probtems that extend the operation-the cemean
`completion ”can be cost competitive." he added.
`
`In some cases. resenroircondiflons may dictate the use of teased and cemented
`completions. In the Horn River. forexampte. packersystems can‘t withstand the
`high temperatures.
`Reynoids said many innovative toois and techniques are emerging that he
`beiieves have the potential to change the way mutti-fractured horizontat wefis are
`compieted in the future. l'Hang onto your hat-there‘s a lot of technical innovation
`going on.” he said.
