`A method andsystem for displaying the multimedia information from wireless
`
`communications or portable IT devices
`
`Inventors:
`
`Tieyun (Ronald) Wang; Tiehong (Ann) Wang, William Halal, Ximing Wang, and
`
`Tiecheng Wang
`
`Abstract:
`
`The invention presents a method and system for displaying the high rate data flow such
`
`as multimedia information in both a wireless communication environmentand a non-
`
`communication environment. One application of the invention is to display multimedia
`information for the wireless terminal in the next generation cellular (3G and 4G) era. The
`next generation (3G or 4G)cellular network will be employed in transmitting multimedia
`
`information (graphic, real-time audio/video). However, the mobile terminal(cellular .
`
`phone, personaldigital assistant (PDA)) cannotdisplay the high quality video and audio
`
`information on its small size screen and earphoneswith clarity and satisfaction. This
`
`invention discloses a method and system in which a separate multimedia display terminal
`
`(a monitor/ a TV set/ a projector/ a LCD) with speakers is connected with the mobile
`
`terminal(cellular phone, personaldigital assistant (PDA))or a portable IT device
`
`(defined as any portable device with a function or any combination of functionsthatis
`achieved by a desktop computer) through a video (graphic) processor. This multimedia
`display can be a cathoderaytubedisplay, liquid crystal display, LCD,a projection unit or
`
`any combinationthereof. In this invented system, the multimedia information through
`wireless network or information from a portable IT device is displayed on a separated
`
`display instrumentdriven by the video (graphic) processor connected with the mobile
`
`terminal or the portable IT device. Three designs are suggested in this invented system:
`
`1.
`
`a video (graphic) processor being embeddedin the mobile terminalor the portable
`
`IT device;
`
`2.
`
`3.
`
`a video (graphic) processor being embeddedin the external display equipment;
`
`an external video (graphic) processor.

`

`Background ofthe invention
`
`Soon, any combination of functions of a computerwill be separated into a portable
`
`device so that people will be able to work and access multimedia information any time
`
`and anywhere. The most appealing advantage and the dominanttrend of the next
`
`generation wireless communication system (3G) and beyondisits capacity of supporting
`
`high rate multimedia data services as well as the conventional voice services. As
`
`demonstrated in FIG. 1, the cellular phone functions as a multimedia terminal to display
`
`multimedia information, the high-resolution graphic and the high-quality real-time
`
`audio/video, sent from high data rate wireless communications network. The limited size
`
`(2 inch by 3 inch mostly) of the screen of a mobile terminal (cellular phone) meansa lot
`
`inconveniencefor people to access the high rate data flow. The consequenceofthe
`
`limitation of small screen of a wireless terminal or a portal IT deviceis the shrinkage of
`
`the potential market size. People even havestarted to doubtthe original motivation of the
`
`3G systems: whatis the point of providing high data rate services for such a small
`
`screen?
`
`This invention provides an answer: we don’t display the data flow on the screen of a
`
`mobile terminal (cellular phone) or any portable IT deviceitself but on an external
`
`monitor/display instead. Since the possibility that a customer requests multimedia
`
`services while walking is very small, we suggest set up external displays in transportation
`
`devices such as planes, vehicles and hotels where people demandhigh data rate services.
`
`Summary of the invention
`
`1. A method and system are disclosed which enables a customerof a
`
`wireless/mobile terminalor a portable IT device to view the video information
`
`from an external display terminal including a monitor, a projector, a LCD, a TV
`
`set) with speakers.
`
`2. An object of the invention is to provide a method and system overcome the
`
`inconvenience andlimitations of the small size screen in a mobile terminal or a
`
`
`
`

`

`portable IT device for displaying high data rate information either from a network
`
`or not.
`
`3. A particular feature of the invented system relates to that the video (graphic)
`
`processorhas the following functions:
`
`3.1 Understanding the data format from the mobile terminal received through the
`wireless network or from the portable IT device;
`3.2 Processing the received data and convertingit into the signal to be recognized
`and displayed on the multimedia display terminals;
`
`3.3 Feeding the converted signal to the multimedia display terminals;
`
`3.4 Driving at least one multimedia display terminal.
`
`4. There are three major means to implement the connection in the invented system
`
`illustrated as below:
`
`4.1
`
`Cellphone-Embedded Video (Graphic)Processor (FIG.2)
`
`The video (graphic) processor chipset is embedded in the mobile terminal
`
`(cellular phone, PDA)or the portable IT device. The data from the mobile
`
`terminal sent from the basestation or the data from the portable IT device
`is processed by the embeddedvideo (graphic) processor (such as Graphic
`
`Processing Unit) and sent out as image signals to the external displays.
`
`e Advantage:
`
`Any standard monitor or LCD or TV set or a
`
`projector can serve as an external display. Only a simple cableis
`
`required to connect the external display with the mobile terminalor
`
`the portable IT device.
`
`e Disadvantage:
`
`It
`
`is a challenge to install
`
`the video/graphic
`
`processor in a mobile terminal or a portable IT device due to the
`smallsize ofthe portable device and the limited battery power.
`
`4.2 Monitor-Embedded Video/Graphic Processor: (FIG.3)
`
`The video (graphic) processor chipset
`
`is embedded in the external
`
`displays.
`
`
`
`

`

`« Advantage: For external displays, the issues caused by the size
`
`and battery power of the “host” are resolved. Any 3G mobile
`
`terminaland IT portable device can be connected to the external
`
`displays.
`
`* Disadvantage: Not every standard monitors can be used as external
`
`monitor in the suggested system. Only those embedded with video
`
`(graphic) processorcan.
`
`4.3.
`
`External Video/Graphic Processor: (FIG.4)
`
`is packed into an independent
`The video/graphic processor chipset
`external hardware called “external video/graphic processor box”.
`It is
`connected to the mobile terminal/portable IT device on one end and to the
`
`external display on the other. The video/graphic processor inside the
`
`“external video/graphic processor box” converts the multimedia data from
`
`the mobile terminal/portable IT device into image signals and feeds the
`
`output to the external displays to be viewed.
`
`e Advantage: Any standard mobile terminals/portable IT devices and
`
`the displays can fit into the suggested system.
`
`e Disadvantage: One more hardware is addedinto the system
`architecture.
`
`A more complete understanding of the present invention, as well as further features and
`
`advantages ofthe present invention, will be obtained byreference to the drawings and
`detailed description. The figures 2 - 4 describe the mechanism of the invented system
`applied in a wireless combination environment.
