`
`PORTABLE VIDEO AND IMAGING SYSTEM
`
`PROTECTING YOUR INVENTION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
`
`Since the rights granted by a U.S. patent extend only throughout the territory of the United States and have no
`effect in a foreign country, an inventor who wishes patent protection in another country must apply for a patent
`in a specific country or in regional patent offices. Applicants may wish to consider thefiling of an international
`application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). An international (PCT) application generally has the same
`effect as a regular national patent application in each PCT-member country. The PCT process simplifies the filing
`of patent applications on the same invention in member countries, but does notresult in a grantof "an international
`patent" and doesnoteliminate the needof applicantsto file additional documents and fees in countries where patent
`protection is desired.
`
`Almost every country has its own patent law, and a person desiring a patent in a particular country must make an
`application for patent in that country in accordancewith its particular laws. Since the laws of many countries differ
`in various respects from the patent law of the United States, applicants are advised to seek guidance from specific
`foreign countries to ensure that patent rights are not lost prematurely.
`
`Applicants also are advised that in the case of inventions madein the United States, the Director of the USPTO must
`issue a license before applicants can apply for a patent in a foreign country. Thefiling of a U.S. patent application
`serves as a request for a foreign filing license. The application's filing receipt contains further information and
`guidance asto the status of applicant's license for foreign filing.
`
`Applicants may wish to consult the USPTO booklet, "General Information Concerning Patents”(specifically, the
`section entitled "Treaties and Foreign Patents") for more information on timeframes and deadlinesfor filing foreign
`patent applications. The guide is available either by contacting the USPTO Contact Center at 800-786-9199, or it
`can be viewed on the USPTO website at http://“www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html.
`
`For information on preventing theft of your intellectual property (patents, trademarks and copyrights), you may wish
`to consult the U.S. Government website, http:/Avww.stopfakes.gov. Part of a Department of Commerceinitiative,
`this website includes self-help "toolkits" giving innovators guidance on how to protectintellectual property in specific
`countries such as China, Korea and Mexico. For questions regarding patent enforcementissues, applicants may
`call the U.S. Governmenthotline at 1-866-999-HALT (1-866-999-4158).

`
`The grantof a license doesnot in any way lessen the responsibility of a licensee for the security of the subject matter
`as imposed by any Governmentcontract or the provisions of existing laws relating to espionage and the national
`security or the export of technical data. Licensees should apprise themselvesof current regulations especially with
`respect to certain countries, of other agencies, particularly the Office of Defense Trade Controls, Department of

`
`Description
`
`Embodiments of the portable video and imaging system include a base portion
`
`and a camera connected to the base portion via one or more cables. The base portion
`
`includes, among other things, power and data storage components and electric
`
`connector ports. The camera portion includes, among other things, image and audio
`
`capture components and circuitry, including an image sensor, a microphone and user
`
`interface elements for enabling the user to control the system.
`
`The base portion includes a power component, such as a battery, and a data
`
`storage component, such as flash memory or other data storage technology. The
`
`power componentis rechargeable and provides powerto the base portion as well as the
`
`camera portion. The data storage component stores video and image data generated
`
`by the camera portion as well as metadata associated with the image and video data. A
`
`first physical port on the base portion enables connection to the camera and a second

`

`physical port enables connection to a computer. Thelatter of the physical ports may be
`
`used to charge the battery. The physical ports may be, for example, mini USB ports.
`
`The base portion may also include an interface for receiving an external storage
`
`component such as a memory card, wherein video and image data may bestored in
`
`internal storage.
`
`The base portion is preferably relatively small with a low profile and configured to
`
`fit in a wearer's pocket, in a holster situated on the user’s belt, or other location. By way
`
`of example, the base portion is preferably between one andthree inches wide, between
`
`two andfive inchesin height, and between one-tenth and one-half of an inch thick. The
`
`base portion mayinclude a display for viewing images and videos or may be configured
`
`without a display. Theillustrated embodimentof the base portion omits the display.
`
`It
`
`will be appreciated that omitting the display enables the base portion to be smaller,
`
`lighter and less complex than if it included a display.
`
`The base portion further includes one or more visual indicators, such as light
`
`emitting diodes (LEDs) or other devices for creating a visual indicator for indicating a
`
`mode of operation such as recording versus not recording, a status of the battery, a
`
`status of the data storage component, or the status or mode of operation of other
`
`components or functions of the base portion.
`
`The base portion may include one or more wirelessinterfaces for communicating
`
`with the camera portion (as explained below), with a base station, or both. A base
`
`station may be operable to store video data and images captured by the portable video
`
`and imaging system and maybelocated, for example, in a vehicle or in a building. The
`
`one or more wireless interfaces may be configured to communicate using the Bluetooth

`

`or Wi-Fi communications protocols, or may be configured to communicate via a cellular
`
`telecommunications network.
`
`It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that
`
`various communications technologies and protocols may be used without departing
`
`from the spirit or scope of the invention.
`
`The cameraportion is configured to be attached to the user’s person, such as the
`
`user's Clothes, to capture video or images during use and communicate the image or
`
`video data to the base portion for storage. The camera includes an image sensor and
`
`associated components, such as an electronic controller and a lens, as well as a
`
`microphoneor other componentfor capturing audio. The camera also includes various
`
`user interface components for enabling the user to control operation of the system via
`
`the camera portion.
`
`In the illustrated embodiment, a first button located on a side of the
`
`camera starts and stops a recording function, a second button located on the front of
`
`the camera causes the camera to “bookmark” a video during video recording, and a
`
`slide switch located on a side of the camera portion mutes the audio wheninafirst
`
`position and enables audio capture whenin a second position.
`
`A “bookmark”in a video captured by the camera is stored as video metadata and
`
`indicates a time in the video corresponding to the time when the user depressed the
`
`bookmark button. The bookmark may be useable, for example, by a computer running
`
`software that enables a user to view the video once transferred to the computer from
`
`the base portion. Such software would enable the user to jump to a bookmarkorstart
`
`the video at or near the bookmarked location. The bookmark function may be useful to
`
`law enforcement personnel, for example, who witness an eventof particular interest and
`
`desire to indicate a time of the event in the video. The audio mute function may also be

`

`desirable to law enforcement personnel who are required to avoid capturing audio data
`
`of other persons under certain circumstances, such as where the law requires law
`
`enforcementpersonalto inform a personprior to capturing audio data of that person.
`
`The camera portion includes a fastening device for attaching the camera portion
`
`to a user's clothes. Two different interchangeable fastening devices for use with the
`
`camera portion are illustrated in the attached drawings.Afirst attaching device is an
`
`alligatorclip illustrated in drawing sheets 7, 8 and 17. A second fastening deviceis a
`
`button mountillustrated in drawing sheets 15 and 16. The button mountincludes a slot
`
`for receiving a button and a retention clip (drawing sheet 16) that engages the slot
`
`prevents the button from sliding out of the slot, thus securing the button mount on the
`
`user’s button during use. Both of the fastening devices are rotatable relative to the
`
`camera portion when attached to the camera portion, allowing the user to rotate the
`
`cameraportion relative to his or her person once the camera is attached.
`
`The camera is configured to operate with relatively little ambient
`
`light.
`
`In
`
`particular, the camera includes a high-sensitivity image sensor, related circuitry and lens
`
`operable to capture images and video at 0.0687 lux. Stated differently, the minimum lux
`
`LuXmin perceptible to the camera is defined as LuXxmin = (10 x Vaark)/Vresponse and is
`
`0.0687, where Vaax is the voltage generated by one pixel of the image sensorin the
`
`absence oflight and Vresponse iS voltage generated by the pixel when exposed to one
`
`lumen oflight.
`
`The camera portion is connected to the base portion via a cable configured to
`
`transmit data and power between the camera portion and the base portion. Because
`
`the cable can be disconnected from the camera portion, the base portion, or both, the

`camera portion and the base portion may be physically and electrically separated for
`
`storage or to swap out the camera portion or the base portion.
`
`The system includes a covert mode wherein all or some of the notifications
`
`communicated to the user are done via vibrations. The vibratory notifications may
`
`replace visible indicators such as LEDsor audible indicators such as beeps.
`
`While the portable video and imaging system has been described herein as
`
`useful for law enforcement personnel, it will be appreciated that the invention is not so
`
`limited and that virtually anyone can use the system in a variety of activities and
`
`situations.
