`INTRODUCTION

`i t i s necessary t o correct the channel errors or
`t o devise methods

`errors (techniques o f error-concealment) . I n the

`f i e l d o f e r r o r c o n t r o l many coding techniques have
`been studied. These techniques consist o f coding

`images without
`taking
`i n t o account
`t h e i r
`characteristics, or, on
`the contrary, combining
`the source and channel coding by u t i l i z i n g the
`properties o f images.
`I n t h i s l a s t case many tech-
`niques have been investigated h-31. Modestino e t
`a1 [Z] use the p r i n c i p l e o f f i n d i n g a trade-off
`between source and channel coding, when the source
`encoder under study
`i s based on
`the discrete-
`cosine-transform (LET), and a f i x e d number o f b i t s
`a l l o c a t e d t o each transformed block (no VLC). By
`applying convolutional and block codes ( a l l w i t h
`low coding r a t e ) ,
`they consider three d i f f e r e n t
