`running in the guide grooves of the table making it possible for them to slide together in parallel on the
`table.
`(2) The television fixture for vehicles listed in Range No. 1 of the patent application enables the television
`screen to be given small rotational torque in the open position, the aforementioned torque being greater
`when in the closed position, and when the television screen is being operated it receives greater rotational
`torque when pressure is applied to it.
`
`3. Detailed Explanation of the Invention
`Field of Use in Industry
`The invention is applicable for television fixtures in vehicles and can be used in airlines, cars, ships, etc.
`Conventional technology
`Today, color television displays have also become flatter due to the invention of new display elements,
`such as color television monitors, for example, using liquid crystal elements, and these have become
`commonly used. Utilizing these special features make it possible for color television monitors to be affixed
`in the seat backs of vehicles to allow viewing of television not only in the home but in vehicles as well.

`
`
`What follows is an explanation of Diagram 6 regarding the placement of a color television monitor inside a
`conventional automobile. Here the television monitor and main reception parts are attached to Chassis
`Section 31, the Picture Tube Section 32 is split in 2, the Chassis Section 31 is affixed to the Front Seat
`Section 33 and the Picture Tube Section 32 is affixed to the back side of Front Seat Section 33 enabling it
`to be rotational, the Reception Tube Section 32 can be pulled out of the Storage Section 34 of the Front
`Seat Section 33 and is constructed in such a way that this condition can be maintained. When the
`Reception Tube Section 32 is housed in the Housing Section 34 of the Front Seat Section 33 the Support
`Plate 35 lids the front section of the Reception Tube Section 32 protecting the display surface (Cathode-ray
`tube surface) (refer to Public Report No. Jitsukosho 40-1288).
`
`Problem areas to be resolved by the invention
`Installing the table to the back side of a seat in these types of vehicles makes it possible for it to be used for
`eating and drinking. Accordingly, it naturally is hoped that when the table and color television are installed
`in the back side of a seat, either can be used without interference to the other.
`This invention will make it possible to use the table and the television without interference to each other as
`mentioned above by providing a television fixture for vehicles.
`
`Steps for resolving problems
`(1) This invention, it is hoped, will allow for a television screen to be affixed to the rear upper portion of the
`backseat so that it can be rotated, and a pair of table arms attached to the rear of the aforementioned
`backseat so that it can be opened and closed at a set angle, affixed with a table, with axis affixed to the
`shafts of each of the aforementioned table arms; with guides running in straight parallel grooves in the
`surface of the aforementioned table connected to the shafts, the two shafts of the aforementioned table arms
`running in the guide grooves of the table making it possible for them to slide together in parallel on the
`table.
`
`Action
`Accordingly, this invention will allow the height of both the table arms and table to be lowered by sliding
`the table on the rotational axis of the table arms when the table is not being used without interfering with
`the television monitor and stored in the seat back, and when the table is being used the table arms can be
`used by opening the seat back and sliding the table in the direction opposite of that mentioned above and
`set in a level position for use.
`When the television is being used, as it is located in a higher position, it causes no interference.
`Furthermore, because both are separated, if a drink is spilled on the table it will not affect the television so
`it has the added feature of not needing waterproofing. Because the angle of the television monitor can be
`adjusted, it is possible for it to be set at an angle for easy viewing, making it very convenient.
`
`Example
`Diagrams No.1 through No.5 are used to explain an example of the actual use for this invention below.
`In Nos. 1 through 4, 1 is the seat back, the angle of which can be adjusted; 2 is the table arm that is attached
`and can be opened and closed at a set angle, for example able to open and close at 50 degrees, by a metal
`frame (not pictured) attached to the floor and located on the back side of seat back 1; and 3 is the table.
`The aforementioned table 3, as shown in Diagrams No.1 and No. 3, is formed by the mounting surface and
`parallel straight grooves 4a, and these straight grooves 4b being connected at one end to the opposing side
`end surface, using the curved guide grooves 4. The two axes 5 and 6 constructed at the upper end of table
`arms 2 fit into these guide grooves 4. 7 is the rotational television monitor affixed to the upper area of the
`recessed area 8 of the seat back 1 and the display area 9 uses liquid crystal display elements. As for the
`display area 9, it is possible to use other devices such as EL display elements, flat cathode-ray tubes, etc.
`The television monitor 7 can be opened and closed (rotation) for example in a range of 80 degrees, and it
`can be freely locked at any angle within that range as it have been given rotational torque for any direction.
`Regarding the aforementioned construction, pushing the power switch (not shown) of the television
`monitor 7 enables the viewing of television broadcasts. Because the angle of the seat back 1 is adjustable,
`for example as shown on the left side of Diagram 3, when seat back 1 is substantially perpendicular to the
`
`358
`
`
`Voxx International Corp. Exhibit 1009
`
`
`
`floor, the television monitor 7 is easily viewable even if the seat back 1 is substantially level and if seat
`back 1 is tilted back as shown in Diagram No. 3, because the angle of the television monitor 7 has been
`changed, the screen becomes difficult to see. At such times the television monitor 7 can be seen more
`easily if the angle is adjusted.
`Also, if the table arm 2 and table 3 are also stored in the recessed section 8 of the seat back 1 together with
`the television monitor 7, the length (height) of the original table arm 2 and table 3 added together are set to
`about the same height of the seat back 1, and when the aforementioned television monitor 7 is present, the
`aforementioned length becomes shorter, and its influence appears in table 3, the length of the forward and
`back direction of table 3 becomes shorter, and its practical use becomes inconvenient.
`For that reason, guide grooves 4 are constructed in table 3 for such a configuration, and the two axis 5 and
`6 are created to fit in the aforementioned the guide grooves 4 in table arms 2. When the table arms 2 and
`table 3 are stored in the seat back 1, table 3 can be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction as shown in
`Diagram No. 3 after which axis 5 facing the rotational axis section side of the table arms 2 can be slid until
`it meets the ends of the straight line groove 4a. In this case the height (length) of both the overlapping
`sections of table arms 2 and table 3 can be reduced. At such time the height of both is such that table arms
`2 and table 3 can be stored in the recessed area 8 of the seat back 1 even if the television monitor 7 is
`present because the upper edge of the table 3 when stored in the seat back 1 is set so that it is positioned
`below the television monitor 7.
`When table 3 is used, table arms 2 are opened, and table 3 can be slid in the direction opposite of that
`mentioned above, and by rotating it, it can be set in a level position as indicated in the right part of Diagram
`No. 3. Because table 3 is made to have the same area size, it allows for freedom of use.
`Table 3 has been considered in regards to the placement of television monitor 7, and in that case, the usable
`surface area of the table is decreased, creating a problem of finding an adequate solution for preventing
`possible spillage of food and drink affecting the television monitor. The present configuration is able to
`resolve that problem.
`The aforementioned table arms 2 are attached to rotational metal supports 2b and 2c at both ends of flat
`pipe shaped arm structure piece 2a as shown in Diagram No. 3, the lower edge of the rotational support
`metal support 2b are affixed so that they can rotate by the shaft section 11to the metal frame above the floor,
`and when open become one with the protruding section 12 in order to set the open angle connected to the
`aforementioned metal frame section. Further, two shafts 5 and 6 are attached to the rotational mental
`support 2c of the upper edge. The cable (not pictured) for supplying power and signals goes through the
`inside of the seat back 1 and is connected to the television monitor 7 in the area near the rotating support
`shaft 13 of the television monitor 7.
`The following is an explanation of the rotating support shaft 13 of the aforementioned television monitor 7.
`When the television monitor 7 is open there is little rotational torque but when closed there is much
`rotational torque.
`Diagram No. 5 explains this construction. As indicated in detail in Diagram No. 4, attachment 14 is affixed
`to the left and right of the recessed area 8 in the seat back 1, and the television monitor 5 is affixed to this
`attachment 14 and can rotate. 15 in Diagram No. 5 is the rotating shaft that rotates together with television
`monitor 7; 16 is the attachment that freely supports the rotation of this rotating shaft 15, and is attached to
`14 with screws. 17 is the coiled spring wrapped around the exterior of the rotating shaft 15 and part of it is
`locked to attachment 16. 18, 19, and 20 are washers to prevent slippage and the E ring.
`The rotational torque becomes smaller when the television monitor 7 is in the open direction (rotating shaft
`14 rotational direction) loosening the coiled spring 17 allowing it to be opened with little effort. When
`shutting the television monitor 7 tightening of the coiled spring 17 increases the rotational torque requiring
`more force to be applied in order to close the television monitor 7. If the rotational torque when closing
`this set large with the push control when selecting channels or adjusting sound volume of the television
`monitor 7 , the television monitor 7 will not rotate by operation of the aforementioned channel selection,
`and the operation can be verifiably performed. 21 are apertures for the screws in Diagram No. 5.

`
`
`Effects of the Invention
`
`As described above, with this invention it is possible to affix a television monitor that can rotate to the
`upper back section of a seat back and by affixing a table arm to the back side of the seat back allowing
`opening and closing, the table arm makes it possible for the table to slide and because it is constructed to
`allow for rotational movement, there is no interference to either when both are in use or when stored. Also,
`because the television monitor and table are separate, even if a drink on the table should spill, it has the
`advantage not adversely affecting the television monitor.
