`
`ELECTRIC DRUM STROKE COUNTING MACHINE
`
`5 (cid:9)
`
`This is a Provisional Patent Application filed for the invention by Derrell W.
`
`McAfee and Craig Alan Kestner of a "Electric Drum Stroke Counting Machine."
`
`Background of the Invention
`
`The present invention relates to a musical testing device and more
`
`particularly to a drum beat counter attachable to a drum head.
`
`10
`
`The speed of drum beating has been debated over time. Further, student
`
`need to practice to make sure that a four-beat cadence is being performed or any
`
`other n-beat cadence is being performed.
`
`Summary of the Invention
`
`15 (cid:9)
`
`The present invention uses a piezo sensor attached to a drum head to count
`
`the number of beats on the drumhead buy drum stick. Piezo sensor each time a
`
`drum stroke is made into a black box counter which preferably counts both number
`
`of strokes as well as time. Seconds can be set to count down from any set time so
`
`that user can, for example, count the number of drum strokes in ten seconds, twenty
`
`20 (cid:9)
`
`seconds, etc.

`
`Various schematics, drawings and parts lists explain in greater detail the
`
`operation of the machine.
`
`Brief Description of the Drawings

`
`labeled showing the device attached to a conventional drum head.
`
`Figure 2 is an assembly drawing of the device having the various parts
`
`labeled showing the device attached to an electronic drum head.

`
`Figure 4 is a schematic for the drum beat timer.
`

`
`Figure 5 is a schematic for the drum beat counter.
`
`Figure 6 is a partial parts list.
`
`Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
`
`A drum beat counter shown in Figures 1 or 2 is attached to either a
`
`conventional drum head as shown in Figure 1 or an electronic drum kit as shown in
`
`15
`
`Figure 2. For the conventional drum head, a piezo sensor is provided.
`
`The device is made as shown in Figures 1 or 2 using the schematics and parts
`
`list of the remaining drawings. The amount of time to count down or count up on
`

`
`
`
`the device can be set using a digital or analog switch. The counter can be set using
`
`Attorney's Docket No. 4367
`
`a switch.
`
`An external control can also be provided.
`
`As the drummer hits either the conventional drum head (Figure 1) or the
`
`5
`
`electronic drum kit (Figure 2), the device reads the number of beats for a given
`
`time.
`
`The Figures and the descriptions on the figures are incorporation herein by
`
`reference.

`
`Abstract of the Disclosure
`
`A drum beat counter that can be attached to either a conventional drum head
`
`or an electronic drum kit. The counter counts the number of beats over a given time
`
`set by the user. This device can be used in many ways including speed counting or
`
`5
`
`ensuring that the drum actually beats the number of times desired.

`
`THE PURPOSE OF THE DEVICE IS TO MEASURE A DRUMMER'S HAND OR FOOT SPEED (i.e. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STRIKES A DRUMMER CAN HIT A DRUM WITHIN A PRE-SET TIME).
`THE DEVICE WILL BE CAPABLE OF MEASURING A DRUMMER'S SPEED ON AN ACOUSTIC DRUM VIA A PIEZO SENSOR AND ON AN ELECTRONIC DRUM BY DIRECT HOOK-UP.
`
`SPECS;-
`
`THE DEVICE IS TO BE 9 VDC POWERED AND CAN BE BATTERY POWERED WITH A SINGLE 9 VDC BATTERY OR POWERED BY AN EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY.
`WILL HAVE A FOUR (4) DIGIT DIGITAL DIPLAY COUNTER AND 10 TO 90 SECOND DIGITAL DISPLAY TIMER. THE COUNTER WILL TOTALIZE THE NUMBER OF STRIKES
`AGAINST THE DRUM HEAD INCREMENTING ONE (1) PER STRIKE. THE TIMER WILL HAVE AN ADJUSTMENT SUCH THAT IT CAN BE
`SET IN 10 SECOND INCREMENTS FROM ANYWHERE BETWEEN 10 AND 90 SECONDS. THE TIMER WILL BEGIN TO COUNT DOWN DECREMENTING BY ONE (1) SECOND
`UPON THE FIRST STRIKE. UPON THE TIMER REACHINdiERO (0) SECONDS, THE COUNTER WILL CEASE COUNTING AND WILL DISPLAY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STRIKES AGAINST
`
`- THE DRUM HEAD. UPON PRESSING THE MOMENTARY RESET (INTERNAL OR VIA AN OPTIONAL EXTERNAL SWITCH), THE COUNTER WILL RESET TO ZERO (0000)
`
`AND THE TIMER WILL RESET. THE ABOVE SEQUENCE WILL THEN REPEAT UPON STRIKING THE DRUM AGAIN.

`
`A drum beat counter that can be attached to either a
`conventional drum head or an electronic drum kit. The
`counter counts the number of beats over a given time set by
`the user. The drum beat counter includes a strike sensor
`adapted to detect the strikes and create a strike signal, a
`strike counter electrically connected to the strike sensor and
`adapted to receive the strike signal, adapted to detect strikes
`represented in the strike signal, and further adapted to create
`a count signal; and
`a display electrically connected to the counter and adapted
`to receive the count signal and present a representation
`of the number of strikes. This device can be used in
`many ways including speed counting or ensuring that
`the drum actually beats the number of times desired.
