`Catalog, and disseminates them to customers and/or potential customers from the year they are
`
`printed until the next edition is printed.
`
`In 1997, the availability of an updated Catalog would
`
`have been announced to the Completions sales and regional organization via announcements,
`
`newsletters, etc. Common practice was for each field location to maintain Catalogs on hand and
`
`to restock by ordering a quantity that could range from 25-30 to up to several hundred at a time
`
`from the literature storage facility for the express purpose of providing to their local customer
`
`base. Requests received directly from customers could have also been fielded through either the
`
`Direct Sales group or Marketing Departments based in Carrollton, TX. Some region locations
`
`would have distributed at local customer events or conferences, and catalogs would have been
`
`included in product packages when sending pricing quotations or responses to customer inquiries;
`
`or the like.

`INTRODUCTION
`
`Single String Permanent Packer Installation
`This simple, versatile, single-zone completion features,
`from bottom to top, a wireline re-entry guide. There(cid:173)
`entry guide guides wireline tools which have been run
`below the end of the tubing string back into the tubing.
`A bottom no-go landing nipple allows for flowing
`bottomhole pressure surveys. The selective landing
`nipple allows the well to be plugged for testing pur(cid:173)
`poses or so tubing can be removed without exposing the
`formation to kill fluids. A Perma-Series® permanent
`packer, a sealbore extension below the packer, and a
`seal unit assembly with locator isolate the upper
`permanent casing string from the formation and allow
`tubing expansion or contraction to occur. The sealbore
`extension could be eliminated and a shorter seal
`assembly with a latch-type locator used if little or no
`tubing movement is expected. The circulating device
`allows for selective tubing-to-casing communication. A
`tubing-retrievable or wireline-retrievable safety valve
`may also be used.

`
`Dual String Retrievable Packer Installation
`This dual-zone, dual-string completion uses an upper
`hydraulic-set retrievable dual packer and a lower perma(cid:173)
`nent packer. The permanent packer and tailpipe are run
`first and set on tubing or wireline. The dual strings and
`dual hydraulic-set packer are then run with a seal assem(cid:173)
`bly on the bottom of the long string. Once the dual strings
`have been landed and spaced out at the surface, a ball is
`dropped or a plug set in the landing nipple below the
`packer in the short string. Pressure is applied to the short
`string and sets the dual packer. If a ball catcher is used,
`increased pressure causes the collet catcher to release,
`allowing the ball to drop out the end of the tubing.
`Circulation of completion fluids is achieved using the
`sliding side doors above and below the dual packer.
`
`Bigbore/Monobore Completion
`The bigbore I mono bore installation shows a single-trip
`bigbore I monobore completion. This type completion
`incorporates a production liner across the producing
`interval and production tubing which is the same size as
`or larger than the production liner. The production liner
`allows for a wide variety of well intervention without the
`use of a workover rig. This could include re-perforation
`using large guns, mechanical perforation isolation, and
`even additional depth. The completion shown, from the
`tie back seal to the hydraulic-set Perma-Series® packer
`with upper PBR assembly and above, is run, spaced-out,
`and landed. Pressure is applied to the tubing string to test
`the tubing and set the packer. Pressuring the tubing a
`predetermined number of cycles then causes the Mirage™
`disappearing plug to actuate, leaving the wellbore full(cid:173)
`open and ready to produce.

`
`Coiled Tubing Completion
`Coiled tubing can be used in place of regular jointed
`production tubing in certain completions. Using coiled
`tubing allows for reduced completion/ de-completion
`time while using standard completion equipment
`accessories. Special connectors allow standard comple(cid:173)
`tion components to be attached to the coiled tubing. GO
`or HGO mechanical utility packers can be used as
`alternative tubing hangers to suspend coiled tubing in
`siphon string applications.
`
`Shallow Completion
`A simple completion is illustrated for shallow applica(cid:173)
`tions using a tension set PLT packer and splined travel
`joint. A tension set packer is normally used in shallow
`applications as weight is not available to set compres(cid:173)
`sion set packers. This particular completion is used in
`steam injection applications. Replace the travel joint
`with an overshot tubing seal divider and the completion
`is typical of shallow C02 or water injection applications.

`Electric Submersible Pump Completion
`This schematic shows an electric submersible pump
`completion which allows annulus gas below the packer
`to vent to the annulus above the packer. In an emergency,
`or when desired, hydraulic control pressure is released
`from the control line allowing the gas vent sleeve valve to
`close, sealing the vent gas below the packer. A common
`hydraulic control line can operate the tubing-retrievable
`safety valve and annulus gas vent valve.
`
`TCP Completion
`Many types of Halliburton packers are used in comple(cid:173)
`tions with tubing conveyed perforating guns, including
`Versa-Trieve® retrievable packers, Perma-Series®
`permanent packers, and others. Tubing conveyed
`perforating guns can be run as tailpipe connected to the
`bottom of the packer, or through the bore of a set packer.
`This installation shows a Versa-Trieve® packer set on
`electric wireline. The tubing conveyed guns are spaced
`out below the seal assembly, and the tubing run in the
`hole. Before stabbing through the packer, light fluids
`can be circulated down the tubing to provide an under
`balanced situation. The tree is installed, guns mechani(cid:173)
`cally or hydraulically fired, and the guns released to
`open the tubing end.

`
`Multilateral System 1000™
`Halliburton's Multilateral System 1000 allows for the
`most economical multilateral completions, providing
`isolation of single or multiple open hole lateral groups.
`Once the completions are in place (see examples), there is
`no access to the laterals; however, production from single
`
`laterals or selected groups can be plugged or opened as
`desired to control production sources. The laterals are
`openhole, although liners dropped off in the lateral are
`also possible. The completions shown use standard
`Halliburton completion components and accessories.

`INTRODUCTION

`
`

`
`HALLIBURTON
`
`Multilateral System 2000™
`Halliburton's Multilateral System 2000 provides
`openhole laterals with flow isolation capabilities
`comparable to the System 1000™ completions. Multilat(cid:173)
`eral System 2000 laterals also allow for re-entry access.
`Once the lower zone is isolated, the access sleeve is
`opened and diverters are put into place. This operation
`allows service tools to be run into the lateral section.
`Production from this system can either be separated or
`commingled; however, the lateral liners are not me(cid:173)
`chanically connected to the parent wellbore, and the
`junctions are not sealed. Dual-string (as shown) or
`single-string selective completions can be run.
`
`Multilateral System 3000™
`Halliburton's Multilateral System 3000 provides lateral
`liners which are sealed and mechanically connected to
`the main wellbore. A window bushing assembly can be
`used when necessary to reduce the junction ID, making
`it compatible with the production tubing size so that
`through-tubing reentry access to any selected lateral is
`possible. Production from the completion shown is
`commingled. Isolation of selected laterals is accom(cid:173)
`plished by running through tubing plugs. Selective
`production could be accomplished by utilizing a
`completion similar to the System 2000.

`Deepwater Completion
`This deepwater completion uses Halliburton's
`FracPac™ technology (see the Sand Control Catalog)
`and components to make the completion's capability as
`high-rate as possible. Non-elastomer or metal-to-metal
`sealing is used in critical areas to assure reliability. Full(cid:173)
`bore nipples and locks are used to maximize ID and
`eliminate slickline problems due to packing interference
`that can occur when standard locks are run through
`same-bore size landing nipples. A single-trip comple(cid:173)
`tion using the Mirage™ disappearing plug to set the
`high pressure retrievable production packer reduces
`running time and simplifies the completion.

`
`STPP™ Single Trip Perf/Pack Completion System
`One example of the many types of sand control comple(cid:173)
`tions Halliburton has to offer is the STPP Single-Trip
`Perf/Pack Completion System. Separate trips for
`perforation, completion, and cleanup are not required.
`Large bore sump packers are available which allow
`maximum size perforating guns to be used. MPT gravel(cid:173)
`pack service tools prevent premature setting of the
`Versa-Trieve® packer during perforation allowing the
`packer and TCP guns to be run together. The MPT tool,
`a non-rotating tool, eliminates the need to rotate to set
`the Versa-Trieve packer and to perform gravel-pack
`operations. The Champ® packer eliminates the need to
`displace the entire well bore with nitrogen by confining
`displacement to the tubing. The OMNI™ valve elimi(cid:173)
`nates the need to move tubing to kill the well after
`perforating. More information about this and many
`other sand control completions are detailed in the
`Halliburton Sand Control Products and Services
`catalog. Additional information is also in the
`Halliburton Screens catalog.

`
`PACKERS
`
`For almost 40 years, Halliburton's Production Packers
`have met the needs of the oil and gas industry with
`innovation, performance, and value. Whether it
`is a standard packer from our extensive product line,
`or a unique specialized design for a hostile environ(cid:173)
`ment, Halliburton is the preferred supplier of produc(cid:173)
`tion packers.
`
`Halliburton has a packer for every type of completion:
`permanent packers rated for more than 20,000 psi
`(13 789.40 kPa) at 450°F (232.22°C); retrievable packers
`suitable for 15,000 psi (10 342.14 kPa) at 400°F (204.44°C);
`dual packers for stacked or injection wells; thermal
`packers for steam service, multi-lateral wells, horizontal
`wells, deep water completions, and gravel packs.
`
`Commitment to technology is the key to Halliburton's
`innovative packer designs. Skilled engineers use
`Computer Aided Design to create the packers for future
`completions. Finite Element Analysis and full scale
`testing in Halliburton's world class test facility ensure
`that the packer performs as designed. The Deep Well
`Simulator allows packers to be tested under actual
`downhole pressures and temperatures with applied
`tubing loads. Two test wells verify tool compatibility
`and packer operating sequences. Oilfield metallurgy
`and elastomer development experts keep Halliburton at
`the forefront of these technical fields.
`
`Halliburton packers are manufactured to a quality
`program standard that meets the requirements of ISO
`9001. All threads are gauged and inspected according
`to API or proprietary standards.
`
`This chapter describes several types of packers used in
`subsurface completions. Descriptions of permanent
`production packers, sealbore retrievable production
`packers, hydraulic-set retrievable packers, mechanical(cid:173)
`set retrievable packers, and packer completion accesso(cid:173)
`ries are included .
`
`Halliburton offers a complete line of packers and
`accessory equipment to help plan your well comple(cid:173)
`tions. Besides packers for permanent installations,
`Halliburton gives you a wide choice of production,
`isolation, utility, and special application packers,
`offering a packer solution for every type of well
`completion. To determine which Halliburton packer is
`best suited for your well, contact your local Halliburton
`representative.
