`Yep, the wait is over: the Treo 650 got officially official today, and right on schedule, too
`(well, depending on whether or not you take into account them seriouslyjumping the
`gun and accidentally distributing the Treo 650 press release last week). No, you can't
`buy it yet—you're at the mercy ofthe carriers now, which won't actually be offering the
`new smartphone until they're good and ready—but at least we know that it can't be too
`
`much longer now. And as we all already knew, the major improvements over the old
`Treo are Bluetooth, a higher resolution LCD screen, a faster processor, and a
`removable battery. The stuffwe are disappointed by: still only 32MB of memory,
`supposedly some carriers will be crippling the Bluetooth, and the camera is still only

`PalmOne is trying to keep the price competitive with SonyEricsson and Nokia
`models, and the PocketPC models out there, but I think they're betting too much on
`the popularity of the 600. Not many 600 owners will upgrade to this, and this won't

`3. To be honest the new specs are decent; but to keep the same crappy 0.3
`megapixel camera is alittle insulting. it would have looked beatiful on that new high-

`5. l was going to buy one ofthese. I even had my mom convinced it'd be great for
`school and she was going to pay for halfof it. But now I think I'll be putting my Treo
`money into a digital camera. if it had the 1.3 megapixel camera lwould still have the
`credit card on the ready. :‘( Unfortunately that 0.3 megapixel camera is the
`dealbreaker for me.

`9. For me, the camera doesn't matter. 0.3, 1.3, whatever. What worries me more is
`the comment in the PalmlnfoCenter article (sorry for linking to another site)

`10. l was going to get the treo 650, but with the 1.3 camera gone, l'll either wait for
`the Treo 600 to get cheaper or for the BenQ. It's too bad...| was ready to sell my
`furniture just to get the treo 650 with 1.3 camera, too. If you're reading this, Palmone

`13. I had the Treo 600 and got rid of it because of the dreadful camera, wimpish
`memory and the screen resolution. Yes, we have bluetooth (although Orange will
`probably disable it on their record) but the camera and memory haven't changed.

`14. The Treo 650 has a 312 Mhz Intel PXA270 processor, which should provide for
`snappier performance, as well as improved power management and battery life.
`Graphics should be improved with the MMX capabilities of this chip, and i suspect
`the video and camera interfaces benefited greatly also. Check out the Intel website

`15. I heard that the SD slot is SDIO capable, so will Palm work w SanDisk et al on a

`WiFi SDIO card? Any details on how many EDGE slots are capable? lam expecting
`only 2 down + 1 up, but hoping for 4+2 or at least4+1. A single EDGE slot
`theoretically supports 59.2Kbps using MCSQ encoding with 8PSK modulation. The
`Nokia EDGE phones are 2+1 , so AT&T; avg downlink is 80-100Kbps. Of course the
`device could support 4+1/2 and the carrier could choose to save voice bandwidth
`and only support 2+1 on the network.

`19. When cameraphones are reaching 5 megapixels, the 650 is stuck at VGA. What

`happened? When storage means 256MB and up, only 22MB can be mustered. What
`happened? When cell phones have been used as a modem for years, ET is

`function perfectly, Handspring came out with the 600. With the 650 treated as the
`2nd coming, what happened?.....l know! Palm bought Handspring. Eventually, the
`original innovators left, hence innovation dissipated. Granted with the 650, we were
`all expecting just simple improvements to keep up with the times, which there were
`several, however, they were more cosmetic and not substanstial enough to keep up
`with other smartphones. The 600 was so great because it broke all the rules and
`was ahead of the game in their relative product. When something is so successful, it
`wants more ofthe same, maybe it's because "they" felt they missed the so-called
`ipod explosion mentality with the initial short supply ofthe 600. The 600 was
`successful, because there was no other device like it. Now, there are several already
`
`competing for the top spot as the treo killer. Is this supposed to be round 2? It's more
`like the dreaded Windows upgrade. Are my expectations too high? Am I dreaming
`
`for something impossible to have? The funny thing is that awhile back i was asked to
`fill out an extensive survey regarding my opinion of my newly purchased 600, giving
`in detail what I liked and didn't like about my treo. A year later, I have to ask again.

`bluetooth, crap camera, no wifi. The CPU was fine, the memory didn't matter 'cos I
`slipped in a decent SD card. So, with the new phone what has changed? Why buy it
`really. Bluetooth is nice, but I can do without to be honest, since it has a cool IMAP

`client (snappermail) I do not need to connectwith my laptop. I really do not see why
`you would buy the 650 instead ofthe 600. Hope the Ericsson is good, but it will take
`something to beat the Treo 600. Everything worked. Won't bother checking the new
`one though.
