`Issue
`
`You have Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition or Symantec Client
`Security. You need to update your virus definitions daily rather than to
`use the default weekly schedule.
`
`Solution
`
`Symantec AntiVirus 10.x clients and servers can get updated virus
`definitions daily by running LiveUpdate.
`
`Symantec AntiVirus 9.x/8.x clients or servers cannot get daily virus
`definitions updates just by running LiveUpdate. If they run LiveUpdate
`to connect to Symantec public servers or to internal LiveUpdate
`servers that update their content from Symantec LiveUpdate servers,
`they will receive new definitions weekly. Legacy Symantec AntiVirus
`versions can obtain daily updates only from an .xdb file or from
`Symantec AntiVirus 10.x servers through the Virus Definitions
`Transport Method.
`
`This restriction allows only a certain number of methods for updating
`Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Client Security daily. Which
`method you use depends on which versions of Symantec AntiVirus
`are on your network.
`
`Symantec AntiVirus 10.x only
`If you use only Symantec AntiVirus 10.x, use the following methods:
`
`Default LiveUpdate

`
`In Symantec AntiVirus 10.x, LiveUpdate can get new virus
`definitions daily from the Symantec public servers. Only
`Symantec AntiVirus 10.x clients and servers can get daily
`definitions by this method.
`LiveUpdate Administration Utility
`You can use the LiveUpdate Administration Utility to download
`definitions to an internal LiveUpdate server. Symantec AntiVirus
`clients and servers then get virus definitions by running
`LiveUpdate to the internal LiveUpdate server. Only Symantec
`AntiVirus 10.x clients and servers can get daily definitions by this
`method.
`
`Symantec AntiVirus 10.x primary server with Symantec AntiVirus
`10.x/9.x/8,x clients or secondary servers
`In an environment that contains both a Symantec 10.x primary server
`as well as Symantec 10.x/9.x/8,x clients or secondary servers, use the
`following methods:
`
`LiveUpdate and Virus Definitions Transport Method
`Use LiveUpdate to update the Symantec AntiVirus 10.x servers
`from the Symantec LiveUpdate server. Then, to update clients
`and any legacy Symantec AntiVirus servers from the Symantec
`AntiVirus 10.x servers, use the Virus Definitions Transport
`Method (http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002111915202948) .
`An .xdb file
`Download the daily .xdb file, and place it on the master primary
`server. To automate this method, you can use the XDBdown
`script (http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2004061116024848) .
`LiveUpdate Administration Utility and Virus Definition Transport
`Method
`You can use the LiveUpdate Administration Utility to download
`definitions to an internal LiveUpdate server. Update the Symantec
`AntiVirus 10.x servers from the internal LiveUpdate server. Then,
`to update clients and any legacy Symantec AntiVirus servers from
`the Symantec AntiVirus 10.x servers, use the Virus Definitions
`Transport Method (http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002111915202948) .

`
`An .xdb file
`Download the daily .xdb file, and place it on your master primary
`server or parent servers. To automate this method, you can use
`the XDBdown script (http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2004061116024848) .
`Then, to update clients and servers, use the Virus Definitions
`Transport Method (http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002111915202948) .
`
`Unmanaged Symantec AntiVirus clients
`
`LiveUpdate to an internal LiveUpdate server
`Use the LiveUpdate Administration Utility to download the daily
`definitions from the public Symantec LiveUpdate server.
`Configure clients to run LiveUpdate to your internal LiveUpdate
`server. All clients will receive new virus definitions daily.
`LiveUpdate to the Symantec LiveUpdate server
`Update all systems by running LiveUpdate to the Symantec public
`servers. Symantec AntiVirus 10.x clients will receive daily virus
`definitions. However, Symantec AntiVirus 9.x/8.x clients will
`receive new definitions weekly.
