`
`By Chris Roper After months of leaked specs, rampant speculation and rumors galore, Microsoft has finally dropped the bomb and officially unveiled
`its next-generation console, the Xbox 360.
`Even with E3 still looming right around the corner, we've posted a ton of info about the system itself and many of its early games over on IGN Xbox
`360. We're here now to give you an in-depth look at the system's official controller, the pad you'll be using to play all of those pretty next-gen games
`this coming holiday season.
`
`For now, the controller is officially called the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller. While you may wonder why it doesn't have a "custom" name like the
`Controller S, remember that the original "Fatty" Xbox controller didn't have a specific public name either.
`Along with its default wireless variety, there will also be a wired version of the controller available for those who are afraid of the invisible demons
`that are used for wireless connectivity. The wired version will feature a 9-foot cable with a breakaway connector, just as the Controller S has.
`The Xbox 360 Wireless Controller connects via a 2.4GHz connection and features "frequency-hopping spread spectrum" technology in order to keep
`interference from, err, interfering with the signal. Four wireless controllers will be usable at once on the Xbox 360 at up to 30 feet away.
`To power and recharge the wireless controller, you have a number of options. The controller can be run on either two AA batteries or a rechargeable
`battery pack. The battery pack fits in the same slot as the batteries, meaning that you can keep a spare handy and swap it in if your first battery pack
`gets low on juice. Speaking of juice, two AA batteries will net you 40 hours of battery life.
`To charge a battery pack, you can use either a separate battery charger to charge it up quickly, or plug the controller into one of the USB ports on the
`Xbox 360 and recharge the battery while you continue to play. When the battery's charged again, you can just remove the cord and keep going. The
`charge cable hasn't been officially shown yet, but it's very likely that it will be a 9-foot cable with a breakaway connector like on the wired version of
`the controller.
`The controller has feedback motors like the Controller S, but this time around you'll have four strength options (including off) to adjust the rumble to
`your liking.
`Let's take a look at the front of the controller.

`
`As you can see, the new controller features the same main face button layout as the Controller S, along with the same analog stick and D-Pad layout.
`There are a few major changes however, starting with addition the Xbox Guide Button smack-dab in the center of the controller. Pressing this button
`opens up the Xbox Guide that is the control center for custom playlists, Live controls like Friends list and such, user settings and more. You'll also be
`able to remotely turn the Xbox 360 on and off via this button. Neat-o.
`You'll also notice that the Back and Start Buttons have been moved from the left side of the controller to next to the Guide button. Around the Xbox
`Guide Button, you'll notice numbers for 1, 2, 3 and 4. These numbers indicate which player your controller corresponds to.
`What about the Black and White buttons, you ask? Take a look at this image:
`
`Here you can see that the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller still features two triggers, but it also has two standard shoulder buttons. These Left and Right
`buttons replace the Black and White buttons of the Controller S, making for what should be a much easier to play controller. It also makes a total of
`four shoulder buttons like the PlayStation 2's Dual Shock 2, which turned out to be the best control mechanism for games that made use of four
`shoulder buttons, like EA's NBA Street series.
`You'll also notice the connection slot on top of the controller. This isn't a memory card slot, as those are on the system itself now, but rather the slot
`for the recharging cable. Lastly, at the top of the image you'll see the release button for the battery compartment.
