`
`DEVICE FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF A PRODUCT WITHOUT
`
`PLUNGER TUBE
`
`
`
`
`
`The present invention relates to a device for the distribution of a product,
`
`especially a cosmetic product or body care product and in particular a distribution
`
`device comprising a container on a distribution part, for example a pump or a valve
`
`of the aerosol type provided to operate with the head on top and without a plunger
`
`tube.
`
`Conditioning and distribution devices traditionally comprise a container on a
`
`distribution part which is a pump or a valve of the aerosol type which are provided
`
`with a plunger tube extending from the distribution part to the container bottom.
`
`Such a plunger tube has several disadvantages. In fact, neither the shape nor the
`
`color of such a tube can be controlled once it is arranged inside a container. The
`
`containers used, in particular for perfume bottles, are frequently transparent and
`
`show the plunger tube, which is not esthetical. It is therefore desirable to avoid
`
`using such a tube.
`
`Several solutions have already been proposed which allow the plunger tube to be
`
`eliminated.
`
`First of all, the bottles of the pouch bottle type or also of the piston bottle type do
`
`not use a plunger tube. However, even in the case in which a pouch or a piston is
`
`used, the pouch and the piston are visible when the bottle containing them is
`
`transparent. Such devices are therefore not acceptable from the esthetic standpoint.
`
`Other devices have been proposed, especially the one described in patent EP 0 626
`
`321. This document describes a distribution device comprising a pump mounted on
`
`

`
`a reservoir. A dosing device is provided in the upper part of the reservoir just under
`
`the pump body. It concerns a retention cup with a small volume of product which
`
`is fixed on the pump body, in particular on the bearing tube of the pump body. The
`
`cup is filled by turning the bottle upside down before activating the pump for
`
`distributing the dose of the product contained in the cup. Such a device necessitates
`
`inverting the bottle before each use, which does not make its use very convenient
`
`or very rapid. Furthermore, when the container used is transparent, the cup is also
`
`visible.
`
`Patent US 4,793,527 describes an atomizing device of the aerosol type which does
`
`not use a plunger tube. The conduit for supplying product to the distribution head
`
`is realized in the form of conduits formed at the periphery of the container. The
`
`conduits are delimited by two partitions, a first partition forming the outer wall of
`
`the container and a second, internal partition located inside the container and
`
`having a shape substantially identical to the shape of the outer wall of the
`
`container. The second partition is provided for moving along the outer wall of the
`
`container under the action of the pushbutton. When the pushbutton is not pushed
`
`down, the second partition makes tight contact with a part of the outer wall of the
`
`container in such a manner that the supply conduit of the product to the distribution
`
`head is obturated. When the pushbutton is pushed down the inner partition slides
`
`axially and moves away from the outer wall in such a manner as to free the supply
`
`conduit of the product and allows the atomization of the product. Such a distributor
`
`is relatively complicated to make since it is necessary to make a relatively bulky
`
`piece slide inside the container. Moreover, the dynamic seal between the two
`
`partitions is not easy to create.
`
`Also, one of the goals of the invention is to make a device for the distribution of a
`
`product that does not have the disadvantages of the prior art.
`
`
`
`3
`
`PETITIONER - THE CLOROX COMPANY - EXHIBIT 1012 - Page 4
`
`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`A particular goal of the invention is to realize a device for the distribution of a
`
`product that eliminates a plunger tube and that does not comprise any
`
`disadvantageous element inside the container.
`
`Another goal of the invention is to realize such a device which is convenient to use
`
`and which does not require a step prior to the activation of the distribution part.
`
`Another goal of the invention is to realize such a device that that is easy to realize.
`
`According to the invention these goals are achieved by realizing a device for the
`
`distribution of a product, comprising a container with an axis X set on a
`
`distribution part, which container has an outer side wall and a bottom, which
`
`device comprises an inner wall delimiting with the outer wall at least one
`
`longitudinal passage, which passage communicates on the one hand with the inside
`
`of the container via an orifice situated substantially toward the bottom of the
`
`container and on the other hand with the distribution part, and the inner wall is
`
`fixed axially relative to the outer side wall of the container.
`
`Therefore, the conduit for supplying product to the distribution head is realized in
`
`the form of a passage formed at the periphery of the container, which avoids
`
`having to use a plunger tube. Moreover, the inner wall delimiting the passage of
`
`product with the outer side wall of the container can be realized by a transparent
`
`material which allows the creation of a conduit for supplying product which cannot
`
`be seen from the outside. Finally, the passage is delimited by walls fixed axially to
`
`one another, which is relatively simple to realize.
`
`According to a first preferred embodiment the external side wall and the inner wall
`
`are spaced substantially radially in such a manner as to form this longitudinal
`
`passage. This then creates a passage for the supply of product which extends
`
`
`

`
`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`substantially over the entire lateral periphery of the container. Such an arrangement
`
`can be readily realized using a simple wall arranged inside a container.
`
`The outer side wall and the inner wall are spaced radially with a length l from 0.05
`
`to 0.5 mm, preferably from 0.1 to 0.3 mm.
`
`According to another embodiment the outer side wall and the inner wall are
`
`substantially contiguous and this passage is a longitudinal groove formed on the
`
`outer face of the inner wall and/or on the inner face of the outer wall. In particular,
`
`the outer side wall and the inner wall can be formed by a single piece by co-
`
`extrusion of the two materials, which are preferably not compatible with fusion and
`
`have different shrinkages.
`
`Therefore, particular esthetic effects can be obtained by selecting the number,
`
`arrangement and the shape of the longitudinal grooves. For example, it is possible
`
`to use one or several grooves formed along an axis parallel to the X axis. The
`
`grooves can be spaced between themselves in a regular manner or not.
`
`Alternatively, the grooves can be rectilinear and oblique relative to the X axis or
`
`can be in the form of stairs, or also have a curved shape, in particular in an S or in
`
`a spiral.
`
`The inner wall advantageously has a lower end of which at least one part is situated
`
`at a distance from the bottom of the container in such a manner as to form the
`
`orifice between the lower end of this internal wall and the bottom of the container,
`
`permitting the longitudinal passage to communicate with the inside of the
`
`container.
`
`Alternatively, the inner wall has a lower end supported on the container bottom,
`
`that is, it extends up to the bottom of the container. Therefore, an orifice is created
`
`
`

`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`in the inner wall at a distance from the lower end, permitting the longitudinal
`
`passage to communicate with the inside of the container.
`
`According to the invention the longitudinal passage empties at its upper end into at
`
`least one routing conduit which connects it to the distribution component. The
`
`routing conduit can comprise, for example, a first part formed in the X axis of the
`
`container and a second radial part perpendicular to the axis. Alternatively, the
`
`routing conduit can be formed by a single part along an axis that is oblique relative
`
`to the X axis.
`
`When the passage is formed by several longitudinal grooves, each group can empty
`
`at its upper end into a routing conduit which connects it to the distribution
`
`component. Alternatively, the longitudinal grooves empty into a transversal groove
`
`formed between the outer wall and the inner wall, which connects these
`
`longitudinal grooves to at least one routing conduit.
`
`The outer wall and the inner wall are advantageously made of transparent material.
`
`In particular, the walls are made of a thermoplastic material selected in particular
`
`from the polypropylenes, polyethylenes, terephthalate polyethylenes, polystyrenes
`
`or from drawn glass.
`
`The distribution component of the device of the invention comprises a pushbutton
`
`for activating the distribution component, which pushbutton comprises at least one
`
`orifice for the discharge of the product under pressure.
`
`The distribution component is constituted, for example, by a valve, which product
`
`is pressurized inside the container by means of a propellant gas which is not
`
`noticeably miscible with the product to be distributed.
`
`Alternatively, the distribution component is constituted by a manually activated
`
`atmospheric pump.

`
`According to another aspect of the invention the device can be used for the
`
`distribution of a cosmetic or body care product, in particular of a perfume.
`
`The invention consists, aside from the arrangements disclosed above, of a certain
`
`number of other arrangements which will be explained below using non-limiting

`
`The device shown in figures 1 to 3 comprises a container 10 with an axis X,
`
`cylindrical in revolution, on which a distribution container 20 constituted by a
`
`pump is mounted. The container 10 is filled with a liquid product P. It is evident
`
`that the container could have any other shape, in particular a transversal section
`
`which is not circular but oval.
`
`The distribution component 20 is constituted by a manually activated classic pump.
`
`The pump 20 comprises a pump body 21 provided with an entrance end 21a which
`
`communicates with the container 10. The pump 21 is activated by a pushbutton 22
`
`provided with a discharge orifice 23 of the product.
`
`The container 10 is formed by a cylindrical wall 11 closed at a first lower end by a
`
`bottom 12. The cylindrical wall 11 has a free edge 110 at its second end which
`
`defines an opening 13. The wall 11 constitutes the outer side wall of the container.
`
`A second cylindrical wall 14 is arranged inside the first wall 11 in a concentric
`
`manner. The second wall 14 constitutes the inner side wall of the container. This
`
`second wall 14 has a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the first wall 12
`
`so that the two walls 11 and 14 are arranged in a slightly radially spaced manner
`
`from one another. An annular interval 31 is then formed between the outer surface
`
`14a of the inner wall 14 and the inner surface 11b of the outer wall 11.
`
`The inner wall 14 terminates at a first end by an outwardly projecting annular
`
`shoulder 140. This shoulder 140 is provided for being supported on the free edge
`
`110 of the outer wall 11 of the container in a tight manner. The inner wall 14
`
`extends beyond the shoulder 140 in such a manner as to form a hollow tapered part
`
`141 whose diameter decreases moving away from the shoulder and which
`
`terminates by a cylindrical neck 142 threaded on its outer surface. The inner wall
`
`
`

`
`PETITIONER - THE CLOROX COMPANY - EXHIBIT 1012 - Page 9
`
`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`14 terminates at its second end opposite the first one by a free edge 143. In the
`
`mounted position the free edge 143 of this wall 14 is not supported on the bottom
`
`12 of the container in such a manner as to form an annular orifice 40 which permits
`
`the interval 31 to communicate with the inside of the container.
`
`The pump 20 is mounted in the neck 142 of the container and is screwed on the
`
`container by an annular ring 24 threaded on its inner surface in such a manner as to
`
`cooperate with the inner surface of the neck 142 and on which the pushbutton 22 is
`
`mounted in a sliding manner. Alternatively, the pump can be clamped or snapped
`
`on the container.
`
`The entrance end 21a of the pump body empties into the inside of the container and
`
`more precisely into the hollow tapered part 141. In this tapered part the wall 14
`
`extends radially inside the container in such a manner as to form two ribs 144 each
`
`extending over the entire diameter of the tapered part. A routing conduit 50 for the
`
`product is formed in a groove 144. This routing conduit 50 comprises a first axial
`
`part 51 into which the entrance end 21a of the pump body 21 is inserted and a
`
`second radial part 52 which connects the first part 51 to the annular interval 31.
`
`The radial part 52 of the routing conduit advantageously empties into the upper
`
`part of the interval 31 so that the entire product drawn in during the pumping is
`
`routed into this conduit.
`
`According to a variant of this embodiment which is not shown, a radial part 52 of
`
`the routing conduit is provided in each rib 144 over the entire diameter of the
`
`tapered part 141. Each of these radial parts 52 empties into the axial part 51.
`
`The outer wall 11 and the bottom 12 are formed by a single piece by injection of a
`
`thermoplastic material, for example of a polypropylene. The inner wall 14 as well
`
`as the tapered part 141 provided with ribs 144 and the neck 142 are also formed in
`
`
`

`PETITIONER - THE CLOROX COMPANY - EXHIBIT 1012 - Page 10
`
`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`a single piece by injection of a thermoplastic material, preferably the same as that
`
`of the outer wall.
`
`The device functions in the following manner. When the pushbutton is activated, a
`
`depression is created in the pump body which generates the opening of a valve (not
`
`shown), placing the entrance end 21a of the pump body 21 in communication with
`
`the axial part 51 of the routing conduit 50. The product P contained in the
`
`container in then drawn in via the container bottom, via the annular orifice 40, rises
`
`up via the interval 31 and is conducted into the pump body via the routing conduit
`
`50. The product is then distributed in a classic manner via the orifice 23.
`
`According to a variant of this embodiment shown in figure 4 the inner wall 14
`
`extends up to the bottom of the container 12. Its lower end 143 can simply be
`
`supported on the bottom 12 of the container or, as was shown, the inner wall 14
`
`can also be closed by a bottom. And orifice 42 is then realized in the inner wall 14
`
`putting the annular interval 31 in communication with the inside of the container.
`
`The embodiment shown in figures 5 and 6 differs from the one just described in
`
`that the inner wall 14 is contiguous with the outer wall 11 without an interval being
`
`formed between the two walls. The interval is replaced by four longitudinal
`
`grooves 32 formed on the outer surface 14a of the inner wall 14. Each groove has a
`
`relatively small width and a relatively small depth on the order of 0.1 to 1 mm.
`
`The grooves are formed along an axis parallel to the X axis and extend toward the
`
`bottom of the container up to the free edge 143 of the wall 14. Therefore, four
`
`orifices 41 are formed between the free edge 143 and the bottom of the container,
`
`putting the grooves in communication with the inside of the container. At the other
`
`end, each longitudinal groove 32 empties into a transversal groove 33 also formed
`
`on the outer surface 14a of the wall 14 in its upper part. One of the longitudinal
`
`

`
`
`
`
`
`2828480
`
`grooves 32 is prolonged beyond the transversal groove 33 in such a manner as to
`
`join the radial part 52 of the routing conduit 50.
`
`According to a variant of this embodiment shown in figure 7 a radial part 52 of the
`
`routing conduit is provided in each rib 144 over the entire diameter of the tapered
`
`part wherein each of the radial parts 52 empties into the axial part 51. According to
`
`this variant each longitudinal groove 32 communicates with a radial part of the
`
`routing conduit. The transversal groove 33 is no longer necessary.
`
`According to another variant which is not shown, it is provided that the inner wall
`
`14 is supported on the container bottom. Orifices 42 are then provided in the wall
`
`14 near the container bottom. Each orifice 42 empties on the one hand in a
`
`longitudinal groove 32 and on the other hand inside the container.
`
`The devices shown in figures 8 and 9 are variants of the embodiment described in
`
`conformity with the figures 5 and 6 and describe different configurations of the
`
`longitudinal grooves 32. In figure 8 a plurality of closely spaced longitudinal
`
`grooves 32 are formed along an axis parallel to the axis X. In figure 9 the grooves
`
`are in the form of an S. Therefore, different esthetics can be obtained in accordance
`
`with the selected configuration off the grooves.
`
`All the embodiments just described were described for a device functioning with a
`
`manually activated pump. It is obvious that they can apply to devices functioning
`
`with an aerosol type valve. The container is then pressurized and valve is crimped
`
`on to the free edge of the neck of the internal wall.
`
`Reference was made in the previous detailed description of preferred embodiments
`
`of the invention. It is obvious that variations can be made to them without
`
`departing from the scope of the invention such as it is claimed in the following.
