`
`CUPERTINO, Calif.-(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2000
`
`Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq:TM|C), a leading provider of Internet virus protection, has been granted U.S. Patent No.
`5,983,348 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office directed to its lnterScan AppIetTrap malicious code scanner.
`
`App|etTrap provides a two-pronged approach to detecting harmful ActiveX controls and Java applets. Mobile code is
`initially analyzed as it passes through the HTTP proxy server and stopped if any harmful instructions are found. If the
`mobile code passes this initial test, it is permitted to travel to the client's web browser and execute. As the Java applet
`or ActiveX control runs in the browser, App|etTrap monitors the execution and immediately terminates it if any
`potentially hannful instructions are detected. Users retain full control of what constitutes harmful code to deliver a
`policy-based mobile code security solution.
`
`Malicious Java applets and JavaScript downloaded by end-users can steal, delete or modify information and
`compromise corporate security. In addition, "buggy" applets can hinder performance and needlessly consume network
`bandwidth.
`
`Trend Micro's unique two-pronged approach, installing App|etTrap at the web proxy server and analyzing applets at the
`desktop, provides easy installation on the server while utilizing the power of distributed computing to minimize the
`server load. No client deployment of software on the desktop is required and all policy instructions are managed from
`the server. The result is real-time behavior analysis with minimal performance cost.

`
`Some competitive server-based malicious code scanning solutions rely on performance-intensive emulation
`environments, or are only client-side solutions that are difficult to deploy and manage and can suffer from browser
`incompatibility issues.
`
`"We are pleased with this recognition from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office," said Eva Chen, chief technology
`officer at Trend Micro. "As hacker tools become more sophisticated, innovative and sophisticated solutions like
`App|etTrap are required for a more complete defense. |nterScan App|etTrap provides administrators with a manageable
`solution to Java security that doesn't turn the server into a bottleneck."
`
`About InterScan App|etTrap
`
`Trend InterScan AppIetTrap is a policy-based, centrally managed tool for the Internet gateway that stops malicious
`applets and other active content. Installed at the Web proxy server level, InterScan AppIetTrap's three layers of
`protection safeguard Internet-enabled enterprise computing environments through certificate analysis and verification,
`known malicious code filtering, and client-based code behavior analysis.
`
`App|etTrap requires no client deployment. Its distributed architecture provides robust lntemet content security with
`minimal performance impact at the lntemet gateway. The gateway performs certificate checks, quick scanning for
`known malicious code, and wraps applets in security monitoring code. Sent to client computers along with downloaded
`applets, the monitoring code runs in real-time to shut down applets that violate the administratofs security policy. New
`malicious applets detected at clients are sent back to the lntemet gateway and are added to App|etTrap's block list of
`known malicious applets. A copy of the applet can also be sent to Trend Micro for analysis and likely inclusion in
`Trend's pattern file of known malicious applets made available to all customers. AppIetTrap preserves the integrity of
`applet signing within the network by providing the option to resign applets with an enterprise's private keys.
`
`AppIetTrap can block all ActiveX code from entering the Internet gateway and also blocks malicious JavaScript based
`on a list of URLs known to harbor malicious JavaScript.
`
`AppIetTrap on NT and Solaris can be managed through its own Web-based management console and through the
`Trend Virus Control System (Trend VCS). Trend VCS is Trend Micro's revolutionary, award-winning, web-based
`management
