`isn't this incorrect terminology? since DSL is digital you don't use a
`modem, right?

`Unfortunately, "modem" has become a *marketing* term for any device that sets
`between a DTE (read PC/host/server) and any type of data channel (read wire). It
`therefore has lost any proper technical meaning it had when modems were first
`developed to allow digital data to be transmitted across analog, voice-oriented,
`band-limited channels.

`If you look at the specifications for most DSL systems, you will find that
`it is indeed a modem. In fact, G.lite uses the same multicarrier
`technology that Telebit rolled out in 1985 for 9600 bps -- it just uses
`more spectrum space.
`Calling a T1 or E1 (G.7xx) DSU a "modem" is stretching things a little,
`because there is no conversion from a digital stream to tone signaling in
`that service. ADSL does use carrier modulation.
`The main difference between DSL and traditional V.series modem technology
`is that the former doesn't have to work through equipment manufactured in
`1935.
