`How Maps knows your location
`
`Your location is approximated by using this information from your phone:
`
`- GPS: This uses satellites and knows your location within a few meters.
`
`- WiFi: The location of nearby WiFi networks helps Maps know where you are.
`
`- Cell tower: Your connection to a cellular network can be accurate up to a few thousand
`meters.

`
`Google Maps with My Location wil use GPS data to locate the user if the phone has the
`
`capability. But even lor users ol GPS-enabled phones. the cel location service might be
`
`uselul. Lee said. That's because the cell tower feature works better indoors than GPS. it
`
`doesn't drain the phone battery as quickly and can bring up a result quicker, he said.
`
`The service could be useful to a person who might be traveling in an unfamiliar city and
`
`looking tor restaurants or other businesses. A user pulls up Google Maps and hits the
`
`zero key on the phone. A blue dot will appear on the map in the user's location. It the
`
`service used GPS in the phone, the blue dot Will be solid. It the service used cell towers
`
`to determine the location. the blue dot will have a halo around it. indicating that the location
`
`isn't precise. The user can then search lor nearby businesses.
`
`Ggogle says the cel tower techni_q‘ue will locate the user within about 1000 meters. It
`doesn't use triangulation, which calculates a user location based on the users distance to
`
`three nearby towers. Instead. it essentially shows the range or the tower that the users
`
`phone is connecting to.

`
`“The Geolocation API defines a high—level interface to location information associated only with the device
`hosting the implementation, such as latitude and longitude. The API itself is agnostic of the underlying location
`information sources. Common sources of location information include Global Positioning System (GPS) and
`location inferred fiom network signals such as IP address, RFID, WiFi and Bluetooth MAC addresses, and
`GSM/CDMA cell I])s as well as user input. No guarantee is given that the API returns the device’s actual
`location.

`
`The API is designed to enable both ‘one-shot’ position requests and repeated position updates, as well as the
`ability to explicitly query the cached positions. Location information is represented by latitude and
`longitude coordinates. The Geolocation API in this specification builds upon earlier work in the industry,
`including [AZALOC], [GEARSLOC], and [LOCATIONAWARE].”

`
`How Maps knows your location
`
`Your location is approximated by using this information from your phone:
`
`- GPS: This uses satellites and knows your location within a few meters.
`
`- WiFi: The location of nearby WiFi networks helps Maps know where you are.
`
`c Cell tower: Your connection to a cellular network can be accurate up to a few thousand
`meters.

`We've dl been there: You're out and about. and you need to figure out where you are. wh;i's

`your phone using the keypad is so 2006, While some people are lucky enough to have GPS-
`enabled mobile phones that provide location information for Googe Maps for mobile, the vast
`majority of us zre not. So what to do?
`
`Starting today, we have an answer Google Maps for mobile with . My Location

`approximate location information. so it will work on phones without GPS, Simply fire up
`Googe Maps for mobile. press [0], and the map will indicate you approximate location by

`
`Displaying the Result in a Map
`
`To display the result in a map, you need access to a map service that can use latitude and longitude, like Goggle
`Maps:
`
`Example
`
`function shouPosition(position) {
`var latlon = position.coords.1atitude + "," + positiomcoords.longitude;
`
`var img_ur1 = "http : //maps . googleapis . coin/maps/api/5taticmap?center=
`"+1at1on+"&:oom-1485ize-466x309&sensor-fa15e";
`
`document.getE1ement8yId("inapho1der") . inner-HTHL
`
`"< img sr-c= ' "+iIng_ur1+“ ' >";
`
`}
`
`In the example above we use the returned latitude and longitude data to show the location in a Google map (using
`a static image).

`
`Subject to discovery andfurther investigation, LG .lIaps—EnabIed Devices may perform the claimed method
