`
`Samsung splurges on OLED displays
`

`
`SAMSUNG Electronics(cid:146)s display unit plans to invest 4 trillion won (4.7bn) over the next three years
`to upgrade and expand its next-generation display facility for mobile products.
`
`Samsung(cid:146)s next-generation displays feature organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology which are
`widely used in its Galaxy smartphones, a strategy that is closely linked to the company(cid:146)s ambitions to
`develop mobile devices with flexible screens.
`
`Liquid crystal displays have long been the dominant display technology for mobile phones and TVs but
`Samsung(cid:146)s display unit, called Samsung Display, and rival LG Display have invested heavily in OLEDs in
`recent years, claiming they have better colour representation and allow devices to be slimmer because
`they don(cid:146)t require a backlight to illuminate screens.
`
`Samsung has previously said it is ready to address any increase in demand for flexible displays like those

`one of the edges.
`
`Analysts widely expect Samsung to unveil another smartphone with curves when it releases the next
`Galaxy smartphone in March.
`
`Samsung is preparing to bring online a new production facility for flexible OLED screens within the
`second quarter.
`
`Samsung, however, has indicated this year that it has no intention of producing TVs with OLED screens
`anytime soon, citing the need for further technology development and an increase in consumer interest.
`
`OLED TVs are easily three to four times more expensive than LCD TVs with similar specifications due to
`their higher manufacturing costs.
