`Being able to work while away from one's home or office is important to some people.
`Sometimes a person needs to access email, or an Internet site. Other times, someone
`might need to compose a document or put together numbers for a project. in order to
`work away from the office or away from home, many turn to portable computing
`devices, such as a personal digital assistant (also known as a PDA) or a laptop computer.

`Personal Digital Assistant
`A personal digital assistant, or PDA, is a small portable computing device that can be
`carried in a purse briefcase, or coat pocket. While there are some lower-end, lower-
`cost PDAs that come with proprietary operating systems, most PDAs made since 2000
`use one of two operating systems: Palm OS, or Windows CE.

`memory and storage space, and can perform fewer functions. Software applications
`available for desktop or laptop computer systems may not work properly with a PDA,
`because a PDA's operating system would use are completely different from what a
`laptop or desktop computer can use. To compensate for this, "pocket" versions of
`certain software applications, such as "Pocket Excel" or "Pocket Word," are typically
`available for PDAs.

`Laptop Computers
`Laptop computers are portable computing devices that use the same operating
`systems as desktop computers (Microsoft Windows, Apple OS, Linux). Laptop
`computers can be configured to have similar amounts of memory, hard disk space and
`even viewscreen size, as a desktop computer setup has.
`
`Laptop computers are capable of running applications designed for desktop computers,
`thus avoiding the need for "pocket" applications, such as are required for PDAs.
`
`However, even though a small laptop computer is capable of everything that a desktop
`computer is capable of, a laptop computer is not as small as a PDA. The smallest
`netbook computers (as of 2009) are approximately 9 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and
`one inch tall when closed. An average PDA, by comparison, measures approximately
`2.5 inches wide, 4.5 inches tall and 1/2 inch thick.
`
`PDA Advantages
`While a PDA may not have a fully-featured word processing program or spreadsheet
`program, one may not be needed for the task at hand. A "pocket" version of a common
`word processing program can easily create a simple document, such as a letter or a list.
`A “pocket" version of a spreadsheet is capable of performing quick calculations.
`
`Some people also prefer to have a portable device to do their work that they can carry
`on their person. A PDA can easily fit in a coat pocket or a purse.
`

`things.

`Used Laptop
`
`Laptop computers have memory and storage media of comparable size to desktop
`computers, and contain installed microprocessors that operate at speeds similar to
`desktop computers. PDAs are designed to be small, and to be useful for a few
`functions. This limits the amount of memory and storage that can be built into a PDA,
`and only small, slower, low-power microprocessors can be used in PDAs. Therefore,
`laptop computers are also capable of doing things at a much faster rate than PDAs.
`
`Which Is Better For Me-—Laptop or PDA?
`If you don't need to create large files or complex documents, or if size and weight are
`an issue, a PDA might be more useful for your situation.
`
`However, if you need the processing power and the software of a desktop computer
`while away from your home or office, a laptop computer may be a better fit.
