`(57) Utility Model Claims
`A vehicle lamp fitting having a light-guide space which
`is formed by means of a lamp-fitting body and a front-
`surface lens and has an essentially L-shaped cross
`section comprising a space positioned in front of a
`light source and a space positioned to the side of said
`light source, said vehicle lamp fitting being equipped
`with a light-guide plate which has an essentially L-
`shaped cross section such that one end thereof faces
`the inside of the front light-guide space while the
`other end runs along the side light-guide space, and
`which is provided with a reflector on the inside
`thereof.
`
`Detailed Description of the Design
`The present design relates to a vehicle lamp fitting
`that can be advantageously used for tail lamps and has
`an essentially L-shaped light-guide space.
`
`Conventional methods for sideways irradiation of light
`from a light source for a tail lamp include: i) a
`method employing direct light irradiation only; ii) a
`method in which a prism is provided and light from a
`light source is irradiated sideways by means of the
`prism, as described in JP 39-35276 Y1; and iii) a
`method employing a reflective mirror at the part D in
`fig. 1 which will be discussed later, as described in
`JP 49-128170 U.
`
`The case of method i) mentioned above will be described
`next with the aid of fig. 1. A tail lamp 1 has an
`essentially L-shaped light-guide space 4 which is
`formed by means of a lamp-fitting body 2 and a front-
`surface lens 3, and light emitted from a bulb 5 is
`irradiated directly sideways. That is to say, part of
`the light emitted from the bulb 5 advances in a forward
`direction as shown by the reference symbol 6, while
`another part of the light advances in a sideways
`direction as shown by the reference symbol 7.

`
`

`
`
`With this tail lamp 1, however, the color of the front-
`surface lens 3 is either amber or red, and light
`exiting the range further to the side than a bent part
`31 of the essentially L-shaped front-surface lens 3 in
`fig. 1 is very dark compared with light exiting the
`front surface thereof, and as a result there is a
`drawback
`in
`that
`the
`visibility
`deteriorates.
`Furthermore, in the case of ii), if the width of the
`dimension B in fig. 1 is too large, it is difficult to
`achieve an advantage from applying a prism, and
`moreover the dimension C must be equal to or greater
`than a certain dimension, so there are drawbacks in
`terms of added design restrictions. In addition, with
`the method of iii), a dark part is produced at the part
`D in the figure, and visibility deteriorates.
`
`The present design has been devised in the light of the
`abovementioned drawbacks, and the aim thereof lies in
`providing a vehicle lamp fitting with improved
`visibility, and this is achieved by virtue of a vehicle
`lamp fitting having a light-guide space which is formed
`by means of a lamp-fitting body and a front-surface
`lens and has an essentially L-shaped cross section
`comprising a space positioned in front of a light
`source and a space positioned to the side of said light
`source, said vehicle lamp fitting being equipped with a
`light-guide plate which has an essentially L-shaped
`cross section such as to extend from one end of the
`front light-guide space as far as the side light-guide
`space, and which is provided with a reflector on the
`inside thereof. The present design will be described in
`detail below with the aid of the exemplary embodiments
`shown in the figures.
`
`Fig. 2 is a partial view in cross section showing an
`exemplary embodiment of the vehicle lamp fitting
`according to the present design, in which a light-guide
`space 10 formed by a front-surface lens 8 and a lamp-

`
`fitting body 9 comprises a front space 101 positioned
`in front of a bulb 11 and a side space 102 positioned
`to the side thereof, the light-guide space 10 having an
`essentially L-shaped cross section. Furthermore, 12 is
`a light-guide plate formed from a transparent,
`synthetic resin material which is fitted in such a way
`as to extend from one end of the front space 101 as far
`as the side space 102, and has an essentially L-shaped
`cross section.
`
`That is to say, the light-guide plate 12 is bent with
`essentially the same curvature as a curved line at a
`portion corresponding to the side part of the front-
`surface lens 8, in other words a portion corresponding
`to the light-guide space 10 from one end of the front
`space 101 up to the side space 102, the light-guide
`plate 12 being formed in such a way that the thickness
`dimension thereof decreases toward the tip end.
`Furthermore, a reflector 121 is constructed by forming
`a serrated step on the inside of the light-guide plate
`12, i.e. on the lamp-fitting body 9 side, in such a way
`that light exiting the bulb 11 is reflected along the
`curved line of the front-surface lens 8. The light-
`guide plate 12 is fixed by welding to a protrusion 81
`which is provided upright on the inner surface of the
`side part of the front-surface lens 8.
`
`Accordingly, with a vehicle lamp fitting 13 such as
`that described above, the light from the bulb 11 is
`such that light 14 which advances to the light-guide
`plate 12 side whereof one end faces the inside of the
`front space 101 advances inward from that end of the
`light-guide plate 12 and then strikes the outside of
`the light-guide plate 12, in other words a surface 122
`on the front-surface lens 8 side, after which the light
`is reflected to the reflector 121 side. The light which
`strikes the reflector 121 is further reflected to the
`surface 122 side of the front-surface lens by the
`reflector 121, and part 141 of this light passes
`

`
`through the light-guide plate 12 and is conducted
`outside from the front-surface lens 8. Furthermore,
`another part 142 of said light is further reflected to
`the reflector 121 side and light is conducted as far as
`the tip-end section of the light-guide plate 12 by
`subsequent repetition of the same operation as
`described above. This means that by providing the
`light-guide plate 12, which is equipped with the
`reflector 121 on the inside thereof, from one end of
`the front space 101 as far as the side space 102, the
`brightness of the light exiting the side of the vehicle
`lamp fitting 13 can be endowed with essentially the
`same brightness as the light exiting the front surface,
`and therefore an advantage is demonstrated in that it
`is possible to improve visibility.
`
`It should be noted that the exemplary embodiment
`described above relates to a structure in which the
`light-guide plate 12 is fixed by welding to the front
`surface lens 8, but this is not particularly limiting,
`and the light-guide plate 12 may equally be fixed to
`the lamp-fitting body 9, as shown in fig. 3. In this
`case, there is no need to provide the protrusion 81 on
`the front-surface lens 8, as in the exemplary
`embodiment described above, so there is an advantage in
`that visibility can be further improved.
`
`Furthermore, in the exemplary embodiments described
`above, the reflector 121 is formed by forming the
`serrated step on the inside of the light-guide plate
`12, but this is not particularly limiting, and the same
`advantage
`as
`in
`the
`abovementioned
`exemplary
`embodiments can still be achieved if the reflector 121
`is formed by surface-roughening the inside of the
`light-guide plate 12 by means of frosting or forming
`creases or the like, as shown in Fig. 4, for example.
`Moreover, in fig. 4, it is possible to make the light
`exiting the side part of the front-surface lens 8 even
`brighter if a reflective surface is formed by affixing
`

`
`a hot stamp or the like on the side surface of the
`reflector 121 rather than using only the inside of the
`light-guide plate 12 as said reflector 121.
`
`In addition, it is possible to make the light exiting
`the side part of the front-surface lens 8 even brighter
`if a reflective surface is also formed at a portion 91
`of the lamp-fitting body 9 corresponding to the
`reflector 121 of the light-guide plate 12, as shown in
`fig. 5, rather than forming the reflector 121 only on
`the light-guide plate 12, as in the exemplary
`embodiments described above, and as a result visibility
`can be even further improved in comparison with the
`exemplary embodiments described above.
`
`Furthermore, in fig. 6, the light-guide plate 12 is
`fixed to the lamp-fitting body 9, and guide holes 92,
`151 are provided by cutting away a portion of the lamp-
`fitting body 9 and vehicle body 15 corresponding to the
`reflector 121 of the light-guide plate 12, and light
`143 emitted from the bulb 11 is conducted inside a
`luggage compartment 16. Accordingly, a structure such
`as this is advantageous in that it is also possible to
`utilize the light to illuminate the inside of the
`luggage compartment 16, in addition to the advantages
`of the exemplary embodiments described above.
`
`In addition, in the exemplary embodiments described
`above, the light-guide plate 12 becomes thinner further
`away from the light source (bulb 11), so it is possible
`to avoid light absorption and this is therefore
`advantageous in that light can be uniformly irradiated.
`
`As described above, the vehicle lamp fitting according
`to the present design is equipped with a light-guide
`plate which extends from one end of a front light-guide
`space as far as a side light-guide space and which is
`provided with a reflector on the inside thereof, and as
`a result there are advantages in that it is possible to

`
`reduce the dimension E in fig. 2, there are no added
`design restrictions, and moreover it is possible to
`eliminate drawbacks of the prior art such as the light
`exiting the side of the lamp fitting being darker than
`the light exiting the front surface, which leads to a
`deterioration in visibility.
