`
`light emitted from the second light source enters the light guiding plate through
`
`the incident section and is reflected to the front by the display section.
`
`3. Detailed Description of the Invention
`
`
`
`
`
`15
`
`[Industrial Field of Application]
`
`The invention relates to a display device suitably implemented as a
`
`lamp such as that commonly referred to as a high mount stop lamp that is
`
`disposed in a rear part of a vehicle body to issue a warning or the like to a
`
`following vehicle.
`
`
`
`
`
`20
`
`[Prior Art]
`
`A high mount stop lamp has been known as a display device that issues
`
`a warning or the like to a following vehicle to ensure road traffic safety. This
`
`lamp is disposed in a position near a rear window at the same height as a
`
`driver's eyes, is brightly turned on together with a brake lamp during braking to
`
`surely draw attention of the driver in a following vehicle for a purpose of
`
`25
`
`preventing a rear-end collision and the like, and is usually configured as shown
`
`2
`
`
`
`
`
`
`in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6. Namely, a reference numeral 1 denotes a housing whose
`
`front surface and bottom surface are opened, 2 denotes a surface lens
`
`disposed in a front opening of the housing 1, 3 denotes a light source that is
`
`disposed in the housing 1 and turned on during braking to illuminate the surface
`
`5
`
`lens 2 from behind, 4 denotes a reflector for reflecting the light emitted from the
`
`light source 3 to the front, and 5 denotes a bottom plate for closing a bottom
`
`opening of the housing 1. A high mount stop lamp 6 is configured by these
`
`components and is disposed at an appropriate position on an inner surface of a
`
`rear window 7 via a gasket (not shown) or the like. An inner surface of the
`
`10
`
`surface lens 2 is formed with a diffusion lens 8 that includes a number of small
`
`convex lenses to diffuse the light from the light source 3.
`
`
`
`
`
`[Problems that the Invention is to Solve]
`
`In the conventional high mount stop lamp, the light source 3 is turned
`
`on only when a brake pedal is depressed, and, at other times, remains turned
`
`15
`
`off and performs no function. Accordingly, the lamp is inconveniently given a
`
`strong image as an obstacle that obstructs rear visibility.
`
`
`
`
`
`[Means for Solving the Problems]
`
`A display device according to the invention has been made to overcome
`
`such inconvenience as described above, and thus is configured that a light
`
`20
`
`guiding plate is disposed in a front opening of a housing, an inner surface of the
`
`light guiding plate being provided with a display section for letters, symbols, and
`
`the like with a reflection characteristic and an end surface thereof being
`
`provided with an incident section, that a first light source for illuminating the light
`
`guiding plate from behind is disposed in the housing, that a second light source
`
`25
`
`is disposed in the incident section, and that the light emitted from this light
`
`3
`
`
`
`
`
`
`source enters the light guiding plate through the incident section and is
`
`reflected to the front by the display section.
`
`
`
`
`
`[Operation]
`
`In the invention, an entire surface of the light guiding plate is illuminated
`
`5
`
`when the first light source is turned on, and the light hits the display section and
`
`is reflected to the front when the second light source is turned on, thereby
`
`illuminating the display section. Therefore, the single display device can
`
`selectively perform two different types of displaying.
`
`
`
`
`
`10
`
`[Embodiments]
`
`The invention will hereinafter be described in detail on the basis of
`
`embodiments shown in the drawings.
`
`
`
`Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of an embodiment in which the invention
`
`is applied to a high mount stop lamp, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a light
`
`guiding plate. The same components as those in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 are denoted
`
`15
`
`by the same reference numerals, and a description thereof will not be repeated.
`
`In these drawings, while this embodiment differs from the conventional lamp
`
`described above in points that a light guiding plate 10 is disposed in front of a
`
`surface lens 2 in a front opening of a housing 1 and that second light sources
`
`12a, 12b that differ from a light source (first light source) 3 for illuminating the
`
`20
`
`surface lens 2 are respectively disposed in a right and left pair of incident
`
`sections 11a, 11b provided in a lower end surface of the light guiding plate 10,
`
`the other configurations of this embodiment are substantially the same as those
`
`of the conventional lamp.
`
`
`
`The light guiding plate 10 is formed of a resin with superior
`
`25
`
`transparency, such as an acrylic resin, and an inner surface thereof is formed
`
`4
`
`
`
`
`
`
`with letters, symbols, and the like, such as "GOOD BY", each of which is
`
`formed by a number of stippling dots (small conical recesses), and constitutes a
`
`display section 13. In this case, the light emitted from each of the second light
`
`sources 12a, 12b respectively enters the light guiding plate 10 through each of
`
`5
`
`the incident sections 11a, 11b, and the light is reflected to the front by each of
`
`the stippling dots. Accordingly, the display section 13 has a reflection
`
`characteristic, by which the display section 13 is configured to be illuminated.
`
`
`
`The high mount stop lamp that is configured just as described can
`
`perform two different functions by lighting the first and second light sources 3,
`
`10
`
`12a, 12b as necessary. More specifically, when the first light source 3 is
`
`turned on during braking, the light penetrates the surface lens 2 and the light
`
`guiding plate 10 and is emitted to the outside. Accordingly, the entire surface
`
`of the light guiding plate 10 is illuminated brightly, and issuance of a stop
`
`warning (sign), which is a main function, is performed. At this time, the letters
`
`15
`
`in the display section 13 are not shown and thus cannot be read. On the other
`
`hand, when the second light sources 12a, 12b are turned on, the display
`
`section 13 is illuminated to allow the letters to be read as described above, and
`
`thus a function to send a message to a following vehicle can be performed. In
`
`this case, the second light sources 12a, 12b may be constantly turned on during
`
`20
`
`traveling, or may be turned on by a switch operation only when necessary. In
`
`addition, in a case of constant lighting, a circuit may be configured such that the
`
`second light sources 12a, 12b are automatically turned off once the first light
`
`source 3 is turned on, so as not to adversely affect the stop sign function.
`
`Furthermore, the second light sources 12a, 12b may flash to increase an effect
`
`25
`
`of the messaging function.
`
`5
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of another embodiment of the invention,
`
`and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a light intensity controller. In this
`
`embodiment, a filter 20 that is colored in an appropriate color to improve
`
`visibility and fashionability of a message display is covered on a second light
`
`5
`
`source 12, an insertion hole 21 for inserting the light guiding plate 10 and a
`
`freely openable and closable lid body 22 for closing the insertion hole 21 are
`
`provided at a front end of an upper surface of the housing 1, and a light intensity
`
`controller 23 and a smoke sheet 24 are respectively disposed in front of and at
`
`rear of the light guiding plate 10.
`
`10
`
`
`
`As shown in Fig. 4, the light intensity controller 23 is formed in a blind
`
`shape by vertically arranging a plurality of fine silicon rubber strips 27 at
`
`specified intervals in a transparent silicon rubber sheet 26 and by integrating
`
`front and back sides of the strips 27 by a polycarbonate film 28. An external
`
`light 30 that enters the strips 27 at a large incident angle is blocked by the strips
`
`15
`
`27, thereby improving contrast of the display in the display section and
`
`improving the visibility. Here, since the light from the first light source 3 or the
`
`second light source 12 passes through a space between the adjacent strips 27
`
`and is emitted to the outside, the light does not adversely affect the stop sign
`
`function or the messaging function.
`
`20
`
`
`
`The smoke sheet 24 is formed of a transparent resin sheet that is
`
`colored in a light transmissive dark color. It is done so for a purpose of
`
`preventing a phenomenon that, in a case where the light from the second light
`
`source 12 that has entered the light guiding plate 10 leaks to the surface lens 2
`
`side and is reflected to the front by the lens 2 when a message is displayed, the
`
`25
`
`background of the message is colored in a color of the lens (red or the like).
`
`6
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`The light guiding plate 10 can freely be inserted in or removed from the
`
`insertion hole 21 by opening the lid body 22 as shown by a dashed line. Thus,
`
`if the plural light guiding plates with different message contents are prepared in
`
`advance, the plate can freely be selected therefrom and switched.
`
`5
`
`
`
`In both of the above embodiments, a case where the display section 13
`
`of the light guiding plate 10 is formed by the stippling dots has been described;
`
`however, the invention is not limited thereto. The display section may be
`
`formed by stippling lines, and specified letters, symbols, and the like may be
`
`printed on a rear surface of the light guiding plate with a white ink or the like.
`
`10
`
`That is, any display section can be adopted as long as it has the reflection
`
`characteristic for reflecting the light from the second light source to the front.
`
`
`
`In addition, in both of the above embodiments, a case where the single
`
`light guiding plate 10 is disposed has been described. However, if the plural
`
`light guiding plates are disposed and superimposed on each other, and if the
`
`15
`
`second light source is arranged for each of the plates, multiple messages can
`
`be displayed, and a message desired to be notified to the following vehicle can
`
`freely be selected from a number of messages.
`
`
`
`
`
`[Advantage of the Invention]
`
`As it has been described so far, the display device according to the
`
`20
`
`invention can expand the function as a display device because the warning or
`
`the like is issued by illuminating the light guiding plate from behind by the first
`
`light source, the second light source is arranged in the incident section that is
`
`provided in the end surface of the light guiding plate, the light emitted from this
`
`light source enters the light guiding plate through the incident section, and this
`
`25
`
`incident light is reflected to the front by the display section, which is provided in
`
`7
`
`
`
`
`
`
`the rear surface of the light guiding plate and has the reflection characteristic,
`
`thereby illuminating the display section to display a message or the like.
