`
`COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1996--QLogic Tuesday announced the addition of Ultra
`SCSI support to its family of FAS (Fast Architecture SCSI) controllers with the FAS216U and FAS236U.
`
`Both products can operate in initiator and target roles and may be used in host or peripheral applications.
`The FAS216U supports single-ended mode, while the FAS236U supports both single-ended and
`differential modes.
`
`The controllers are designed as drop-in Ultra SCSI replacements for the existing QLogic FAS216/FAS236
`and Symbios/AMD 53CF94/53CF96 products.
`
`The widely used QLogic FAS216 and FAS236, along with its plug compatible competitive products, are
`versatile Fast SCSI solutions for disk drives, tape drives, arrays, and other peripherals.
`
`The new FAS216U and FAS236U are pin for pin and firmware compatible with these Fast SCSI products
`but add 20 MBytes/sec 8-bit Ultra SCSI performance and Level 1 and 2 SCAM (SCSI Configured
`AutoMatically) support.
`
`"Ultra SCSI is rapidly superseding Fast SCSI as the new industry standard," said Dave Tovey, vice
`president and general manager of QLogic's Peripheral Products group.
`
`"By replacing current QLogic and competitive products with the FAS216U/FAS236U family, OEM users can
`painlessly support the new standard, extending the life of current products and allowing the introduction of
`new Ultra SCSI products using an existing, proven code base."
`
`System Organization
`
`The FAS216U and FAS236U controllers interface via three main buses: an 8-bit or 16-bit data bus (DB), an
`8-bit microprocessor address and data (PAD) bus, and an 8-bit SCSI bus. The DB bus provides a path for
`DMA transfers through the FIFO, while the PAD bus provides access to all internal registers.
`
`The FAS216U and FAS236U both support parity pass-through from the SCSI bus through the FIFO to the
`DB bus. This versatile split-bus architecture separates the two high-traffic information flows, (SCSI bus and
`DB bus), thus providing maximum efficiency and throughput.
`
`The FAS216U/236U product family incorporates an on-chip SCSI protocol engine which autonomously
`executes SCSI bus sequences, thereby reducing microprocessor real-time control involvement and
`minimizing SCSI overhead. The versatile 16-bit DMA microprocessor interface provides the complete
`flexibility required to support a wide variety of applications.
