`Chants 1: Introduction
`
`1. Introduction
`
`Oangratuiations on purchasing the NCKIA 9000
`Cbntmnicztor The NCKEA 9000 Corm11nicator
`is a versatile oormunicaion tool: it is a (But
`phone, n1-zsaging device, atxaezesterninai and a
`palntop organiwr in oneocrmaci package
`
`This chapter helps you understand how the
`NCK|A9000Cbnm.Inicator operates Thefo|Iow—
`ing "(fitting Sorted" chapter helpsyou to begin
`us‘ ng the NCNA9000 Cbmmnicator. The rest of
`this manual dealswith the conrmnicator inter-
`face applicationsandthe phoneinterfaoe

`chapter andthe"&tting aarted" chapter. Basic
`infonration about the rxznrmnicator appiica-
`ticns is always available in the context smsitive
`help. The hdp is actiw-Jted by prng the Hip
`button on the corrmun'tcator interface keyboard.
`The NCKJA 9000 Oorrrmnicator has two inter-
`faces. the phone interface (see figure 1-1) and
`the oorrtrunioator interface (seefigure 1-2). The
`phone interface is on the device cover and the
`oorrrrunicator interface is under thecover
`
`The word "interface" errphasises the fact that
`both of these two aspects of the NCKIA 9000
`Conwunicator usethe sarreresources and work
`cfoeeiytogether—they are not separate devices
`For exarrple the phone interface uses narresand
`phone nurrbers stored in the oon'rnunicator in-
`terfaoes Contacts directory, andthe corrrnunica-

`The phone interfaoeisdeagned for quickly mak-
`ing and receiving calls It looksand operateslike
`other NCKIA cellular phones (except that the
`earpiece and rri orophone are on the backside of
`the device). The phone interface is switched on
`and off by prng the® button on the cover.
`
`IMPORTANT!
`Do not switch on the phoneinterfaoewhen cel-
`lular phone use is prohibited or when it may
`[cause interference or danger
`The oorrmunicator interface has many organiser
`and oorrrmnication applications The Qu'\lB?TY
`keyboard, oorrrrand buttons and large display
`rrrake using the applications easy. The ccn'rrI.1ni-
`cator interface has no power onfoff button —the
`cormunicator interface activates itssii when
`you open theoomerand deactixeteswhen you
`olosethe cover.
`
`Cellular Data Ttananmon
`
`The NCNA 9000 Commniczior enploys the
`digital datatrans'ri$1'on c.apd3ilitiesofthe@\l'l
`odlular network to send faxes, short rressages,
`mail and to establish connections with remote
`oorrputers
`Cellular data connections can be made from
`most locations where your cellular phone oper-
`ates However, it isrecorrrrendedtha you move
`the ccrrrrunicator to a location where the
`strongest pomible cellular signal can be ob»
`tained. When thesignal isstrong. datatransrris
`sion iseffioient. In general, youshouldnot expect
`the same perfonnanoe from celular data corn-
`rnunications as from landline oonwunications
`duetothe inherent chaaoteristitsoftheoellular
`environment.
`
`The following factors may irrpair cellular con-
`neotions
`
`Noise
`
`Radio interference from electronic appliances
`and equipment, asweil asfrom other cellular
`phones in rretropolitan areas where cellular
`telephones are prevalent.
`Handover
`
`As the odlular phone user movesfrom one
`network cell to another, the signal strength of
`the channel drops and the cellular tetephcne
`exchange may hand the user over to a differ-
`ent cal and frequency, where the signal
`is
`
`stronger. Aoell handover rmyalsoocwrwhen
`the user is stationary due to varying cellular
`traffic loads Such handovers may cause slight
`delayi-
`
`Hedrostatic Discharge {)
`Adisczhageof static electricity froma finger
`or a conductor may causeerronecusfuncticns
`in eledric deiioa The discharge can result in
`"garbled" display and unstable software op-
`eration. Cellular connections rray beoorre
`unreliable, and data maybeoorrupted andthe
`transmseon halted.
`In this case you need to
`end the eristing ll (if any}, switch off the
`phone interiacelif on) and rerncvethebattery.
`Then replacethe battery and establish a new
`cellular connection.
`
`Dead Spots and Dropouts
`Dead spots are areaswhere radio signa|scan-
`not be received. Dropouts occur when the
`cellular phone um‘ pafi through an area
`wheretheradiosfgn isblockedorreduoedby
`geographic or structural obstrud ions
`
`Sgnal lrrpairment
`[istanoe and obstacles can use out-of-
`pham reflected sgnalsthat resdlt in a lossof
`signal strength.
`
`Low Signal Strength
`Dre to either distance or obstacles, the radio
`signal strength from a cell site may not be
`strong enough or stable enough to provide a
