`2 6 2 Part V: Running a Successful Web Site - - - - - - - - - - - - -
`
`This new system is being designed to be compatible with the existing
`addressing scheme, but that doesn't prevent it from sowing consternation
`among those concerned with keeping the Internet working. All we can say is
`"Don't worry; be happy," because mere mortal users can't do much about
`addressing, anyway.
`
`Domain names
`If you were forced to remember 124.35.223.4 rather than you rdoma in. com
`for every domain you used, you would either be pretty irritated or suddenly
`less able to remember as many phone numbers. For this reason, domain
`names function as more-memorable aliases for the actual numeric addresses
`to which they correspond.
`
`Domain names reside in the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) under the
`auspices of the Registration Services maintained by the Internet's Network
`Information Center (InterNIC). The InterNIC's URL is http : I I
`ds. i nterni c . net! rs- i nterni c. html. If you want to find out whether a
`domain name is available for your use, type the name into the location field
`in your browser and attempt to link to it. If you succeed, it's already taken.
`Actually, a more effective approach is to search the InterNIC's DNS database
`to find out if the domain name you want is already registered.
`
`Although you can register your own domain name, you need to have a Web
`server up and running when you do. Alternatively, if you avail yourself of a
`Web hosting service, that service usually registers your domain name for
`you, for a small fee. The InterNIC invoices you directly for the $100.00 name
`registration fee (good for two years from date of issue). Your ISP or Web
`hosting service invoices you for whatever additional charges may apply.
`
`Domain names can be aliased in your Web server. Instead of assigning the
`actual server's domain name (doma i nxyz. com) to the Web server, most
`Web administrators create an alias for the corresponding Web server that
`reads like this:
`
`www.domainxyz.com.
`
`A www alias is common for Web sites; this alias also allows you to move
`your Web site to another physical Web server, as long as you inform the
`person who runs your local DNS database about this change so that he or
`she can reassign it to the new address. Remember, each computer has a
`unique IP address; your Web server software must reflect this location.
`Thus, you can move your domain name, but usually not your IP address.
`
`URLs
`Uniform Resource Locators provide an unambiguous method to tell a Web
`program where to find any particular item of information. Usually, an URL
`identifies that item's Internet location. In common Web parlance, an URL
`defines a Web page address. A typical URL looks like this:
