`
`About the Authors
`
`Cary Lu was born in Qingdao, China, and grew up in Southern California.
`Trained as a scientist (Ph.D. in biology from the California Institute of
`Technology), Lu went on to join the group that started the Nova science
`documentary series for PBS, and worked on several children’s television
`programs, including Sesame Street, 3-2-1 Contact, and Cro. He also worked
`on education projects in Australia, Kenya, and Algeria. He was the founding
`managing editor of High Technology magazine and now writes the
`PowerBook Notes column for Macworld magazine.
`
`John Milligan, a native of the San Francisco bay area, knows keenly the
`benefits of being in the right geographical place at the right historical time.
`While he was employed at a small electronics start-up company in 1984, his
`desk was graced with a Macintosh 128K computer (along with MacPaint and
`MacWrite) after his technologically compulsive employer tired of its "limited
`applications." That first generation Macintosh served as Milligan’s bridge
`from traditional graphics and writing to a career in computerized publishing.
`Since 1984, he has designed and produced many user manuals and other
`publications, all of which greatly benefited from the marvelous technology of
`the Macintosh computer from Apple.
`
`About the Editor
`Ross Scott Rubin is the author of Yakety Mac:/be Telecom Tome and the
`original edition ofHayden’s PowerBook Power Book. He also has contrib-
`uted to/be Macintosh Bible, Fifth Edition, and/be Virtual Playbousefor
`Macintosh. A consultant to America Online’s Macintosh Hardware Forum, he
`is a staff columnist for CONNECT Magazine and a senior editor of Inside Mac
`Games. He contributes regularly to MacWEEK, MacUser, Mac Home Journal,
`and other publications.

`
`We thank everyone at Apple Online Selwices, the group that manages
`eWorld, for assistance in many ways. For many weeks, Tony Wong helped us
`understand eWorld and helped the Apple Online Systems staff understand
`the book.
`
`Adam Engst helped with testing the Internet mail gateway and reviewed the
`sections dealing with the Internet.
`
`Ross Rubin contributed many improvements to the book.
`
`Karen Whitehouse has been the patient editor at Hayden Books; our thanks
`for her help and support. David Rogelberg, the publisher of Hayden Books,
`made the project possible and challenging.
`
`-Cary Lu and John Milligan
`I am greatly indebted to Fran Farrell of Apple Computer for her unceasing
`efforts in promoting and refining this manuscript; to Peter Shank, for his
`invaluable experience in the world of telecommunications; and to Cleo
`Huggins of Apple Computer for her witty, energetic support of my efforts as
`well as for her resourceful imagination-the source of the eWorld name and
`character,
