`[Abstract]
`[Purpose] To improve instantaneity by loading a portable telephone function to an electronic still camera and
`constituting the camera to be capable of immediately transmitting a taken picture to a large storage medium
`at another place through the use of a telephone line. Also, to miniaturize the whole camera by making a
`display for confirming the taken picture attachable and detachable.
`[Constitution] When pressing a release button 12 halfway, power source is supplied to a camera part and a
`control circuit 25 controls for photographing. A subject is displayed on a display 8 through a lens 1, an image
`pickup element 2, an image processing circuit 4 and a driver 7. When a composition is decided and the
`release button 12 is pressed, picture data is recorded in an internal memory 26 and at the same time, a
`picture line ensuring means 24 instructs a control circuit 28 of a portable telephone set to call a previously-
`inputted telephone number to connect the line. When the line is connected, picture data in the internal
`memory 26 is read out. The control circuit 28 sends the picture data to the line through a modulation circuit
`29 and a transmitting circuit 21.

`The present invention relates to an electronic still camera which is equipped with a
`
`portable telephone set which sends and receives a signal of telephonic conversation by wireless.

`In recent years, electronic still cameras have been attempted to be digitalized due to
`
`stability of circuits, etc. Similarly, memory cards are used as external storage media due to no
`
`deterioration of image. Fig. 10 is a circuit diagram which shows one example of a conventional
`
`digital electronic still camera. Light, not shown in the figure, from a subject forms an image on
`
`an image pickup element 2 by a lens 1. An output of the image pickup element 2 is converted
`
`into a digital signal by an A/D converter 3, and a predetermined process is performed to the
`
`output by an image processing circuit 4.
`
`Image data of the image processing circuit 4 is
`
`compressed and encrypted. The encrypted image data is processed to be expanded by a
`
`decryption circuit 6, and displayed on a display 8 by a driver 7. When a release button 12 is

`pressed, the information of the pressing is transmitted to a control circuit 11, and the encrypted

`image data is stored in a memory card 10. An internal memory 9 is used, for example, when a
`
`storage capacity of the memory card 10 is not enough, to temporarily store the photographed
`
`image and store the photographed image in a replaced memory card which has an empty
`
`storage capacity.

`
`There is a problem that, although memory cards are used as external storage media like
`
`the above, the number of images which can be stored in a memory card is small and memory
`
`cards are still expensive. Also, more and more liquid crystal displays are used as a viewfinder
`
`of cameras, video cameras, etc. for observation of shooting subjects and verification of shooting
`
`images in recent years due to view ability, etc. However, there is a drawback that the shape of
`
`the entire camera becomes larger by using a liquid crystal display.

`Therefore, as a means for solve the above mentioned drawback, the inventors of the
`
`present invention thought about installing portable telephone function in order to be able to
`
`photograph without loading a memory card. Fig. 11 is a circuit diagram showing one example of
`
`a conventional portable telephone set. When a call operation is performed by inputting a
`
`recipient’s phone number with a dial operating part 14, a control circuit 17 sends out the
`
`inputted phone number to a transmitting circuit 21 through a modulation circuit 18. At the
`
`transmitting circuit 21, the inputted phone number is superposed on a carrier wave of a carrier
`
`wave synthesizer 20, and transmitted through a duplexer 22 and an antenna 23. When there is
`
`a response that it is connected to the recipient, telephonic conversation becomes possible.
`
`Voice input from microphone 15 undergoes a predetermined modulation processing performed
`
`by the modulation circuit 18, and is sent to the other end of the line through transmission circuit
`
`21, whereas the radio wave transmitted from the recipient is received by the receiving circuit 19
`

`The present invention has been made based on the above considerations, which
`
`purpose is to equip a cellular phone function onto an electronic still camera. By configuring the
`
`device to instantly transmit captured images to large storage mediums placed at different
`
`locations via telephone line, responsiveness is improved, where the lack of memory on the
`
`device can be resolved in following through with the provision of this invention as a portable
`
`phone equipped with an electronic still camera. In accordance to the electronic still camera,
`
`another object of the present invention is to aim at providing a miniaturized version of the
`
`electronic still camera with a portable phone capacity, by making the display screen used for
`
`confirming captured images and observing photographic subjects detachable.

`[Solution to the Problem]
`
`
`
`In order to achieve the aforementioned purposes, the present invention involving the
`
`electronic
`
`still camera with a portable phone function, a portable phone function unit for
`
`wireless transmitting and receiving telephone call signals will be equipped to a digital electronic
`
`still camera having a lens, image input means consisting of an imaging device or the like, an
`
`image processing means, image encoding means as well as an image storing means. The
`
`output of the internal memory of the aforementioned image storage means is connected to the
`
`input of the modulation circuit of the portable phone function, and when the release button is
`
`pressed on the aforementioned electronic still camera, the image input means is loaded through
`
`the power supply of the camera unit, and after the image is stored into the internal memory of
`
`the image storage means, the control means for powering off the camera unit is put on standby,
`
`where at the instance the aforementioned release button is pressed, the operating control unit of
`
`

`the portable phone function is set in advanced to signal the recipient’s telephone number.

`When the line is connected, the image line securing means for controlling the image data stored
`
`in the internal memory is read out, where the portable phone function unit is connected to the
`
`line in control by the image circuit securing means, and the image data from the internal
`
`memory is transmitted through the connected line, where the line is cut off after the transmission
`
`has finished, and if the line fails to connect in the first place, an attempt to reconnect will be
`
`made through configurations made on the control unit. Furthermore, in order to successfully
`
`achieve the other objects, this invention is equipped with a driver unit and a display unit having
`
`an attachable terminal to the memory card attachment portion of the said storage means, and is
`
`configured with a memory card type display having a structure incorporating external light from
`
`the rear surface of the display that is configured to be used as a viewfinder as well as a
`
`playback screen once the memory card is connected.

`According to the above configuration, at the instant when the release button is pressed,
`
`the power supply loads with the image of the subject stored in the internal memory, where the
`
`securing of the line for the image transmission is executed and once secured, the transmission
`
`of the image is executed, where the line is cut off after the transmission has completed.
`
`Accordingly, this enables photographers to take pictures without carrying external storage
`
`mediums such as expensive memory cards with large capacities, providing a solution to the
`
`above problem. Furthermore, the miniaturization of the electronic camera is realized, even with
`
`the additional size due to the equipment of portable phone function through utilizing a
`
`detachable display.

`The present invention is explained in further details in reference to the figures below.

`Figure 1 is a circuit diagram showing an embodiment of the portable phone function with the
`
`electronic still camera according to the present invention. In the figure, part A enclosed by the
`
`dotted line corresponds to the circuit portion of the digital electronic still camera of described in
`
`FIG 10, where part B is a functional unit corresponding to the circuitry of the portable phone
`
`device in part FIG 11. Each elements denoted by the same symbols perform the same functions.
`
`The controlling circuit 25 of the digital electronic still camera controls the photographing
`
`operation associated between pressing the release button 12 half way, and pressing the button
`
`all the way after powering up the camera unit. The picture line ensuring means 24 will instruct
`
`control circuit 28 of the portable telephone set to call, and dial a previously-inputted telephone
`
`number to secure a line after receiving information from the release button 12. Then, upon
`
`obtaining line connection information from the demodulator circuit 27, the internal memory of the
`
`digital electronic still camera 26 is instructed to read out the image data. The output terminal of
`
`the image reading data in the internal memory 26 is connected to an input terminal of the
`
`modulation circuit 29 of the portable telephone function unit.

`Figure 2 is a figure used to describe an example of the external appearance of the
`
`electronic still camera with the portable telephone function in accordance to the present
`
`invention. (a) is the diagrammatic perspective view of the said camera, (b) depicts the camera
`
`being used in several ways by the user. The surface speaker 13 and the microphone 15 are
`
`position on the upper portion of the surface and the lower portion of the surface of the main
`
`body 25 respectively, where the antenna 23 and lens 1 are also arranged on the top portion of
`
`the surface. The display 8 is positioned around the mid-section of the said surface, where in
`
`respect to its position, the release button 12 is placed at a lower position and the dial 14 is
`
`positioned even more so on the bottom of the said surface. When taking a picture, the device is
`
`held with the left hand as shown in (a) and the lens is pointed to the object (not shown). When

`
`image of the object is displayed onto display 8. The composition of the photo is determined
`
`through looking at display 8, as the transmission of the image is done through pressing the
`
`release button 12 all the way. When making a call, the call button on the dial control unit 14 is
`
`pressed, wherein the recipient’s phone number is inputted through pressing the respective
`
`buttons as shown in state (a). The phone call is then made possible through the use of speakers
`
`13 and microphone 15.

`Figure 3 is a flowchart describing the operation sequence of the portable telephone
`
`function with the electronic still camera concerning the present invention. Once the camera unit
`
`is powered on by pressing the release button 12 halfway (denoted as step (ST), 1, 2), the
`
`control circuit 25 will, in accordance to lens 1, convert the object of the image formed in image
`
`sensor 2 into digital signals by the A/D converter 3, where after the image has gone through the
`
`likes of AGC processing and y-correction through image processing circuit 4, the image is
`
`displayed on display 8 through driver 7 (ST 3, 4). After determining the composition of the image
`
`and pressing the release button 12 all the way (ST 5), the image is encoded through the
`
`encoding circuit 5 and stored in the internal memory 26 (ST6), where the camera unit will power
`
`off, whilst leaving on the minimum required circuits such as the internal memory 26 (ST 7).
`
`Control circuit 25 will determine whether it is set to perform the above actions simultaneously in
`
`batch transfer mode or not (ST 8). If it isn’t set to batch transfer mode, picture line ensuring
`
`means 24 will signal the control circuit of the portable phone function unit 28 to make a call (ST
`
`9). The batch transfer mode here, is a mode where the photographer may at once transmit a
`
`prescribed number of photos all at once after storing it in the internal memory, and is a mode
`
`that can be set in advance by the photographer through toggling the setting switch (not shown).

`On the other hand, when setting the batch transfer mode, the memory card 10 (if
`
`attached), as well as the internal memory 26 will check if there is sufficient space available (ST
`
`14), and will determine whether or not if there is enough space for ‘n’ number of pictures (n may
`
`be configured through the setting switch not shown). If there is not enough space to send out ‘n’
`
`number of pictures, the transmission will not be carried through and will be terminated. If there is
`
`enough space available for ‘n’ number of pictures, it will revert back to operations in ST9.
`
`Control circuit 28 will read out the transmission destination telephone number dialed by the
`
`buttons in the dial control unit 14 from its own internal memory in advance, and will begin the
`
`transmission through modulation circuit 29, and transmission circuit 21 (ST 10), and will monitor
`
`whether to connect or disconnect the transmission line (ST 11). When the signal indicating the
`
`recipient’s response is transmitted back through the circuit, the signal will be received through
`
`the receiving circuit 19, and demodulated by the demodulation circuit 27, where the line
`
`connection information will be inputted through the control circuit 28 as well as the picture line
`
`securing means 24. From receiving the connecting line information, the picture line ensuring
`
`means 24 will read out the image data from the internal memory 26. The read out image data
`
`will then be modulated by the modulation circuit 29, where the carrier wave will be
`
`superimposed by the transmission circuit 21 and be transmitted from the antenna 23 (ST 12).
`
`After the completion of the transmission, the control circuit 28 will cut off the line, and will power
`
`down while leaving the minimum amount of circuits necessary to await incoming calls (ST 13).

`When the signal indicating response back from the other party is not sent back from the
`
`line, or if the line is not properly secured, it will determine whether the recipient is simply busy or
`
`not (including the case when there is no response back). A lamp on the device will signal if so
`
`(ST17). If it is determined that the recipient is not busy, a lamp will signal, indicating that the
`
`device is in a position unreceptive to send and receive radio waves (ST 18). Because the line
`
`will not be connected in either of the two scenarios as mentioned above, the control circuit 28

`will determine if the memory card 10 is inserted or not through the control circuit 25 (ST 19). In
`
`result, the device will signal through a display and or an audio notification, in the case where
`
`memory card 10 is not inserted (ST 20). Accordingly, if the photographer inserts a memory card
`
`10 in compliance to the notification, or if the memory card 10 has been inserted from the
`
`beginning, the image data stored in the internal memory 26 will be transferred over to memory
`
`card 10 (ST 22). Then, the device will then check whether or not if it is set to retry mode (ST
`
`23). If the device is not configured to retry mode, operations for transmission will terminate at
`
`that point. If retry mode is set, the control circuit 28 will start a timer built in the host circuit, and
`
`power off the remaining circuit portions of the device (ST24).

`Then, when the timer goes off after elapsing a predetermined time, the telephone
`
`number of the transmission destination is read out from the internal memory and a call is made
`
`once again from the power being turned on in the other circuit portions. Then, the read out
`
`telephone number is transmitted through the line via the modulation circuit 29 and transmission
`
`circuit 21. After determining whether the line has been secured or not (ST 26), the image data
`
`from the memory card 10 is transferred into the internal memory 26, where the image data is
`
`transmitted through the line via the modulation circuit 29m and transmission circuit 21, ending
`
`the transmission upon completion. (ST 13) Regardless of the outgoing call, if the line does not
`
`connect, the process is reverted back to ST24, repeating the operation where the internal timer
`
`activates and waits to forward the call again.

`Furthermore, the flowchart in Figure 3 assumes that there is a power switch provided
`
`separately from the release button 12, whereby the portable telephone function is put on
`
`standby once the power switch is turned on. Similar to the batch transfer mode, the retry mode
`
`can be selected by operating the setting switch (not shown). If the outgoing call does not
`
`connect at its first attempt, it will attempt to forward the call again in 3 minutes, and if the call still

`placed between each call will be extended with each attempt made. Although the above
`
`operation describes the image data transmission sequence via a line, it is of course, possible to
`
`store the image of the photograph initially taken inside the memory card as well.

`In addition to transmitting image data, it is also possible to receive image data from
`
`elsewhere by the decoder provided. Furthermore, it is possible to view previously transmitted
`
`images by configuration of the control access so that the recipient’s storage media can be
`
`controlled by the transmission circuit, where the image data can be transmitted from the said
`
`storage media. By enabling the use of two lines through configuration, pictures can be taken
`
`and transferred while on call. Furthermore, by the digitalization of the lines, the transmission of
`
`voice information and image information may be done through one line as a packet transmission.
`
`In regards to taking pictures, there are situations where as similar to handling text information,
`
`binary color data is used, in which gradations of black and white are sufficient enough in
`
`processing the image. It is possible to configure each of the circuits involving photography,
`
`image processing and encoding to respond to such cases. As to other features, vocal count
`
`downs when using the self-timer feature, and by receiving data from the position information
`
`acquisition means such as a GPS, the setting of photography and information pertaining to its
`
`environment may also be transmitted additionally through the provision of the circuitry unit.

`perspective view, where the appearance of the camera body in Figure 2 illustrates a different

`electronic still camera with the portable phone feature. (a) is a diagrammatic perspective view

`and (b) indicates the usage stage of the device. This embedment, in which the electronic still

`camera has been miniaturized in spite of the increase in size with the portable phone feature
`
`equipped to it, where the memory card display 34 may be attached to the memory card insertion

`portion 10a (FIG. 1) instead of a memory card. (a) shows the memory card format display 34

`Figure 6 is an embodiment of the circuit configuration of Figure 5, and in contrast to

`Figure 1, is a circuit diagram extracting only the circuit components of the configuration. Display

`8 and driver 7 are omitted from this circuit according to the diagram on Figure 1, where the

`selection circuit 43 is inserted between encoding circuit 5 and memory card insertion unit 10a,

`where the output from the image processing circuit 4 and or encoding circuit 5 is selected based

`of the memory card connector 40 is connected to the controller 39, where controller 39 drives

`and controls X driver 37 and Y driver 38. From the mirror plate 41, external light will enter

`through diffusing panel 35 and into the back of LCD 36. Figure 8 (b) is the diagrammatic

`is the mirror plate 41 at its opened state, and (b) indicates the configuration of the liquid crystal

`edge of the connection terminal portion is a card identification pin 42 provided as shown in (c).

`[Advantageous Effects of the Invention]
`
`As explained above, according to the present invention, by securing photography and
`
`lines for call transmissions simultaneously, the need for an external storage medium as a
`
`memory card is eliminated because the device is configured to transmit the photographed
`
`image data. Therefore, it removes the necessity in carrying around expensive memory cards
`
`with limited space. Because the photographed image data will be transmitted elsewhere, and
`
`based on such configurations, in a sense, users will be able to experience taking pictures with a
`
`remote control rather than a traditional camera. Furthermore, power on the camera unit is only
`
`turned on at the time of photography, and is turned off after completion, where power is
`
`automatically turned off regardless of whether a line is secured or not, enabling extended
`
`periods of use by preventing the use of unnecessary power. Additionally, when configuring the
`
`device so that the memory card may be replaced by the memory card format display, the
`
`memory card display may be removed when the camera is unused, and the miniaturization of
`
`the main body is achieved, where the display itself may be easily replaced when damaged.
`
`Light configured to enter from the back of the display, also gives it a power-saving effect.
