`
`General Product Description
`
`
`Intended Use of i PERS
`The i PERS is a monitoring system that monitors fall and position detection sensing, and is worn by an
`adult considered to be at risk of falling. The system should be easy to use, and generate few false alarms.
`The i PERS system may also monitor physiological data including the users motion due to breathing
`patterns.
`The system originates alarms remotely and locally when the fall or physiological events are outside a
`predetermined range.
`
`Fall Detection
`A miniature, self contained, battery operated, electronic fall alert system that uses a
`combination of referenced tilt angles and G force data that exceed fixed limits, for informing
`monitoring personnel at a remote location when a monitored person falls or is about to fall.
`In addition, the fall alert system may be incorporated with PERS, Personal Emergency
`Response Systems, that are commonly used to summon help at a remote location when a help
`button is pressed by the user.
`In addition, a motion alert system may be incorporated with PERS, Personal Emergency
`Response Systems, to summon help when respiration arrest or dysnpnea occurs.
`In addition, a panting system may be incorporated with PERS, Personal Emergency Response
`Systems, to summon help when a user signals distress by lying down, sitting, tripping, breathes
`rapidly or irregularly, or by holding his breath for a predetermined period of time.

`
`Product to ADT
`Attached are 2 iPERS Engineering models for your evaluation.
`User Module S/N UM-ENG24, and Wall Receiver S/N WM –ENG-24 is a fall detector and manual help button
`product with a belt clip and bra clip option attached.
`User Module S/N UM-ENG35, and Wall Receiver S/N WM –ENG-35 is a motion detector, fall detector, and
`manual help button product with a bra clip option , and velcro strap option attached.
`
`
`Software Updates
`The software in these units requires up to 30 seconds for the position reference to stabilize. Later
`software will reduce this time is 2 seconds.
`A further improvement in software algorithms will require a different algorithm for lying down than when
`walking or sitting.
`
`
`Applicable to both products
`
`
`
`The belt clip can be removed by inserting a small flat blade screwdriver through the small hole on the
`black plastic clip. The belt clip is not used with the motion detection model.
`The bra clip can be removed by turning the 4 screws that hold the wire bra clip 2 turns counterclockwise,
`pulling the wire clip out of its slot, and re- tightening the 4 screws. The bra clip can be used with either product.
`There are no on-off switches on UM-ENG-24. The UM-ENG-35 has a finger nail switch that is on when
`the lever is down and off when up.
`The LED on top of the user cabinet turns on bright for 10 seconds after battery insertion, and then turns
`off. This same LED will blink dimly and continuously one flash per second , and can only be seen in a darkened
`room. This can give assurance to the user that the module is operational at night. The user has a
`predetermined amount of time after an alarm to reset the Wall Receiver so that it does not activate an external
`automatic telephone dialer connected to the Wall Receiver.
`To remove the battery, use a table fork to insert into the hole on the plastic tab attached to the battery,
`and pull. The battery will last a minimum of I month when on 24 hours per day.

`
`The HELP button is located on the front of the product, and is recessed to minimize accidental activation.
`Access to the HELP button can be easily located with a finger through clothing. It contains 3 series switches
`positioned along the length of the oval recessed opening. The series switches allow for a high activation force, a
`greater area for user activation, and provides redundancy for switch failure.
`The Engineering cabinets are pour molded plastic and do not have the mechanical durability of injection
`molded components.
`10 slide switches are located on the back of the cabinet. A rectangular hole has been cut in the cabinet
`for ADT to test various settings. Below is listed the switch settings and their function.

`
`The present Engineering models are obviously not water resistant as specified for the final product.
`
`
`Motion Detection
`
`
`
`The Motion detection model needs to be worn snugly against the individual’s torso. It needs to be in a
`place where their body moves while they breathe. Some people have more motion in the stomach area than
`their chest area, so the device may need to be placed lower on their body in order to detect motion associated
`with breathing.
`The motion pick up tube on the back of the cabinet does not need to be in direct contact with the skin. The
`device will operate through clothing.
`Each motion caused by breathing will blink the LED with each motion for 15 minutes and will then turn off
`to conserve battery life.
` The UM-ENG-35 has a finger nail switch that is on when the lever is down and off when up.
`The Motion switches are set for 1 minute, but can be changed to the time listed in the above chart.
`
`
`Fall Detection
`
`
`
`To test the Fall detector:
`
`Test 1—Exceed 3G’s force and change angle by more than 45 degrees
`1. Sit down in a chair
`2. Clinch the iPERS firmly in your right hand with the front of the cabinet 90 degrees to your eyes.
`3. Bend your elbow 90 degrees and hold for 30 seconds to establish a reference position.
`4. Come down hard and hit your right leg with the bottom of your fist with the iPERS . An alarm will sound
`when the G force exceeds the value set by the internal switches.
`
`
`
`Test 2— Exceed 3G’s force and change angle by 0 degrees
`1. Sit down in a chair
`2. Clinch the iPERS firmly in your right hand with the front of the cabinet 90 degrees to your eyes.
`3. Bend your elbow 90 degrees and hold for 30 seconds to establish a reference position.

`
`4. Come down hard and hit your right leg with the bottom of your fist with the iPERS . Immediately bring your
`arm back to its original position. The alarm Will Not sound when the G force exceeds the value set by the
`internal switches.
`
`Test 3— Exceed 3G’s force, change angle by 45 degrees, and duplicate harmonic motion
Immediately bring your
`arm back 6 inches from your leg, hit your right leg with the bottom of your fist with the iPERS , Immediately
`bring your arm back 3 inches from your leg, hit your right leg with the bottom of your fist with the iPERS.,
`immediately bring your arm back 1.5 inches from your leg, hit your right leg with the bottom of your fist with
`the iPERS and then stop. The alarm Will sound when the G force exceeds the value set by the internal
`switches, the angle change is over 45 degrees, and harmonic motion ceases.
`
`Test 4— Exceed 3G’s force, simulate jumping up and down motion
`1. Sit down in a chair
`2. Clinch the iPERS firmly in your right hand with the front of the cabinet 90 degrees to your eyes
`3. Pound your hand on a hard surface up and down while grasping the iPERS. Do not change the orientation
`of the iPERS unit in relationship to vertical.
`4. The alarm Will Not sound.
