`
`MasterImage 3D to Provide Cinema Systems for Cinemaxx's
`Cineplexes Rollout Across Indonesia
`
`Digital Cinema - MasterImage 3D, provider of pioneering 3D solutions for theaters,
`announced a partnership with Cinemaxx, a subsidiary of Indonesia's Lippo Group, to provide
`3D cinema systems for Cinemaxx's rollout of cineplexes across Indonesia. Indonesian
`conglomerate Lippo Group is a leading property developer with significant investment in
`retailing, media, hospitality, financial services, energy, IT, healthcare and education.
`Cinemaxx, the latest addition to Lippo Group's entertainment business, will expand the film
`exhibition industry in Indonesia by opening over 1,000 new screens over the next five years
`with 3D a prominent component of that experience. Cinemaxx will install its first MasterImage
`3D systems in June 2014. Cinemaxx selected MasterImage 3D for the premium quality of MI-
`HORIZON3D digital cinema system, recognized for providing bright 3D without sacrificing
`image quality. MI-HORIZON3D uses a three-beam optical system that eliminates
`discrepancies between pass-through light and reflected light to create high-brightness 3D with
`greater clarity and uniformity than two-way beam systems. "MasterImage 3D and Cinemaxx
`are committed to provide moviegoers in Indonesia with cutting-edge 3D cinema technology, so
`every 3D movie experience is at its best," said Brian Riady, CEO at Cinemaxx. "The high-
`brightness quality of MI-HORIZON3D combined with MasterImage 3D's reputation and
`ownership business model made them a perfect partner for Cinemaxx." "Indonesia is a
`tremendously engaged market for premium 3D viewing with a growing middle class and tech-
`savvy youth," said Ray Seok, Vice President of Digital Cinema at MasterImage 3D. "Cinemaxx
`is highly motivated and well-equipped to capitalize on this opportunity and we are honored to
`be their partner in bringing the best premium 3D experience together."
`
`MasterImage Introduces High-Brightness 3D Cinema System
`
`Digital Cinema - At ShowEast October 21 - 24, MasterImage (Los Angeles, CA) announced the
`MI-Horizon3D high-brightness 3D cinema system. They did not show it in operation at
`ShowEast, but had the MI-Horizon3D optical head on static display. The ShowEast press
`release didn't have any details on the system but on November 7, I had a chance to talk to
`Richard Garbett, Director of Engineering, and Scott Archambault, Director of Marketing at
`MasterImage about the system. The MI-Horizon3D system does not use the rotating
`polarization wheel that has been a hallmark of previous MasterImage 3D cinema products,
`although those polarization wheel-based products will remain available. Instead, the system is
`based on a polarizing beamsplitter, much like the RealD XL 3D cinema system. In fact,
`Archambault said the RealD XL system was used as a performance target for the development
`of the MI-Horizion3D system. While final tests are not finished, Garbett believes they have
`met their target and have the same efficiency as the XL system. In terms of image quality and

`ease of set up, he believes the MI-Horizon will actually be better than the RealD XL system.

`
`Prototype of the MI-Horizion3D optical system. Photo Credit: MasterImage[/caption] The MI-
`Horizion system actually divides the light coming from the projection lens into three beams,
`not the two beams generated by the RealD XL system. The main beam passes straight through
`the PBS. The PBS is actually V-shaped and the secondary beams represent the top and bottom
`half of the image. Each of the three beams has a LC panel to control the polarization and will
`switch the polarization of the three beams to the left and right circular polarization required by
`3D cinema systems. The photos of the MI-Horizon3D system were clipped from the YouTube
`video posted by MasterImage and the external appearance of the unit may change by the time
`it is finally released. In the left image, prisms for the central and the top and bottom secondary
`beams are visible. In the right image, the relationship between the MI-Horizion3D image and
`the digital cinema projection lens can be seen. There are no additional lenses inside the MI-
`Horizon unit, although Garbett said there were prisms to adjust the optical path length so the
`central and secondary beams all focused at the screen plane. According to Garbett, the MI-
`Horizion3D system can exceed the performance of the RealD XL system, especially in terms of
`ghosting, because this three beam system allows smaller angles through the optical system.
`These smaller angles allow better maintenance of polarization states and, therefore, less
`ghosting seen by the viewer. Archambault says the MI-Horizon3D system will be available in
`Qi 2014. MasterImage plans to sell the system to customers outright, similar to the business
`strategy on the current polarization wheel based 3D cinema products. He would also be willing
`to make other arrangements to meet the needs of customers, including financing the sale of the
`system, leasing the system or a license system similar to RealD's business strategy. Price has
`not yet been set for the unit because MasterImage does not have the final BOM cost for the
`system. Archambault believes the price will be in the range of $201( -$25K when the unit is
`available. MasterImage has posted a "Teaser" video of the MI-Horizion3D system on YouTube.

`RealD Introduces Precision White Screen Technology Combining 2D
`White Screen Performance with Polarized 3D Capability
`
`Digital Cinema - RealD Inc. announced the introduction of Precision White Screen technology
`for cinema projection, combining 2D white screen performance with the ability to project
`polarized 3D images. Designed to deliver enhanced 2D and 3D presentations with wide
`viewing angles similar to white screens of equivalent gain, Precision White Screen technology
`features edges 4 to 5 times brighter than a standard silver screen. The improved screen
`efficiency results in 40% more total light coming off the screen, providing more uniform
`brightness than a standard silver screen. Precision VVhite Screens also feature a smooth, white
`surface which generates better image contrast for improved image quality in 2D and 3D.
`Precision White Screen technology is expected to be available exclusively to exhibitors,
`production and post-production facilities utilizing RealD 3D Cinema Systems initially through
`Ballantyne Strong's (NYSE MKT: BTN) Strong-MDI. Additional details on price and
`availability are to be announced. "Precision White Screen technology delivers high quality 2D
`and 3D images with better brightness uniformity for an exceptional image on screen. With up
`to a forty degree half gain angle, optimal reflection performance can be designed for individual
`auditoriums depending on screen size and curvature; high gain for extra brightness or broader
`distribution of light for wider viewing angles," said Joe Peixoto, President, Worldwide Cinema
`at RealD. "Coupling RealD's industry expertise with Strong-MDI's state-of-the-art screen
`engineering and manufacturing capabilities has created an exciting advancement in cinema
`screens as the Precision White Screen technology delivers a bright, uniform picture that is ideal
`for premium viewing of both 2D and 3D content. We look forward to marketing screens
`utilizing RealD's Precision White Screen technology under our High White brand beginning
