`Projectors - LED/Laser/Hybrid- Christie Digital recentty announced that it has a contract to install a laser
`cinema projector at the Seattle Cinerama theater. This follows Christie receiving the first variance from the
`FDA for a DCI-compatible laser cinema projector, allowing patrons to use the theater without having to sign a
`disclaimer.
`
`This will be the first comrnercial laser cinema projector sold to a commercial theater. Previously, all public
`demonstrations were just thatdemonstrations. For example, Chhstie had previously demonstrated a laser
`cinema projector with 72.000 lumen output in China and the movie G. I. Joe: Retaliation was shown to the
`public in Burbank with a Christie Laser Projector. To get more details from this installation from the point of
`view of a theater owner, Insight Media had a long talk on the upcoming installation with Greg Wood. the
`manager of the Seattle Cinerama theater.
`
`One of the issues of laser cinema has always been the cost issuels there a return on the investment
`(R01)? Since the Seattle Cinerama theater is owned by Microsoft co-founder and Billionaire Paul Allen. ROI
`is not calculated exactly the same way it would be for a regular theater. Wood said. however, Allen does not
`just throw money at the theater to buy the latest technology toy, the technology has to be justified. VVhile
`Wood would not go into the details of cost or ROI, he did say he hoped the new laser projector will increase
`attendance at the 797 seat theater. He added that he does not expect to charge a premium for presentations
`with the laser projector.

`
`When hi-tech visionary Paul G. Allen bought the
`theater in 1999, he gave Cinerama full rein to innovate
`in order to provide our community with a cutting-edge
`movie going expenence." said Wood. -Selecting a
`laser projection solution - with its ability to render 20
`and 3D movies with stunning clarity and brilliant,
`accurate color rendition - is in keeping with this
`tradition."
`
`The Seattle Cinerama theater can show movies in a
`wide variety of formats. Most of their business is
`modern releases (Now showing: Matt Damon and
`Jodie Foster in Elysium) shown on a Christie 4K
`
`Seattle Cinera ma Theater
`
`Series 2 digital projector. They can also show 35mm and 70mm prints, including dual-filmstrip 3D, and, of
`course, the half-dozen movies made in the Cinerama three-strip format.
`
`Cinerarna is based on the use of three film projectors to produce the image and a fourth projector whose sole
`job is to produce the sound. All the projectors must, of course, be synchronized with each other, just like the
`two projectors in film-based 3D must be synchronized. The Seattle Cinerama theater actually has two
`screens. a67 wide flat screen used for most showings, including 3D shovAngs, and the Cinerama screen.
`The Cinerama screen is actually a "Super-Cinerama" screen and is 97 wide. 30' high and covering a 146°
`arc. The two other Cinerama theaters still existing in the wortd. in Los Angeles and London are regular
`Cinerama screens and 'only" 75' wide, 26' high and covering an arc of 120°. Cinerama screens are not
`monolithic screens but are made of vertical strips in a venetian blind artangement to prevent light from the
`left side of the screen reflecting to the right side and reducing contrast in the image. The Super Cinerama
`screen has 2000 of these strips while conventional Cinerama has 1.100 strips. The Cinerama screen in
`Seattle is the original screen, not a replacement.
`
`Switching from the flat screen to the Cinerama screen is not a trivial process. according to Wood. He says
`not only must the main screen be removed, but the THX speaker system behind the main screen must be
`disassembled and moved. For this reason, they show Cinerama films at Cinerama Film Festivals, the next
`one scheduled for September 27 -29.
`
`This Display Daily is supposed to be focusing on the Christie laser projector and, unfortunately. that won't be
`used for Onerama presentations. VVood says Christie will start the site survey and other work this month
`(August ) and he expects the laser projector to be installed early in 2014. Wood wasn't sure if the installation

`will be an upgrade to the existing 4K DLP projector or
`a complete new installation and. apparently, Christie
`isn't sure either.
`
`The target is to have a 60,000 lumen projector that will
`show 3D movies at 14 foot-lamberts, the same
`brightness used for 2D presentations. Wood said the
`laser light sources Christie uses are modular and if
`the 60,000 lumens doesn't produce the target 14 ft.-L.
`Christie will install additional modules until the screen
`bhghtness meets this target. Of course. for 20
`movies, the lasers can be dimmed to get 14 Ft.-L in
`2D as well
`
`The Seattle Cinerama uses RealD XL 3D technology
`with a polarization recovery system. when showing 3D
`with its digital projector. Wood said Seattle Cinerama
`is considering installing a new RealD Engineered
`Screen for increased 30 and 20 performance, but no decision has been made yet

`
`Wood summarized by saying. The true joy of running the Seattle Cinerama is our ability to embrace all
`forrnats. We can forge the future with laser projectors and at the same time ernbrace the past by showing the
`original 3-strip Cinerama films and true reel to reel 70mm. We are very lucky to have the support and
`guidance of our owner. Paul Allen. his support and care for the Cinerama is wonderful."
`
`Next time I'm in Seattle and have an idle evening, I know where I'll go see a movie. -Matthew Brennesholtz
