`
`Volfoni Discusses Polarization Modulator

`
`At Projection Summit, Stephen Palmer. chief science officer of the Volfoni (Paris. France) R&D team,
`discussed the SmartCrystal Cinema polarization switching system, which had been introduced in April at
`CinemaCon. It joined the previous SmartCrystal Pro unit intended for projectors smaller than cinema
`projectors. One of the key advantages this polarization modulator has over competitive offerings is higher
`efficiency, as shown it the table.
`
`Polarization Modulator Efficiency
`SmartCrystal:
`17.0%
`RealD Zscreen:
`16.5%
`16.0%
`Micacube:
`Depth() / LC-Tec:
`14.5%

`
`In the 3D business, especially in the cinema business. the 3D
`brightness at the screen is typically much lower than desired,
`o even a relatively small improvement in throughput efficiency
`can be important in making target luminance values at the
`creen.
`
`f course, few new cinema installations use the RealD Z-
`creen anymore: RealD installations use the XL. XLW or XLDP
`system that include polarization recovery optics that nearly double the efficiency of the system. compared to
`the value for the RealD Z-screen used by Volfoni in the table.

`
`Palmer is well aware of the advantages of polarization recovery when it comes to the efficiency of 3D cinema
`with unpolarized. i.e., DLP. projectors. He discussed very briefly the advanced SmartCube system Volfoni is
`working on. VVhile he didn't make the details of the SmartCube clear, it appears to be a beam-splitting
`polarization recovery system similar to the RealD XL series.
`
`Palmer also discussed a SmartCrystal system for LCoS projectors. Since the light is pre-polarized in an
`LCoS projector. the efficiency of the system is much higher, more than 28%.
