`
`Comments on PBS Feasibility Study.

`
`Size:
`
`The lens final glass element has a size varying from about 90mm to about 130mm. These
`elements carry a rectangular patch of ratio 1.85:1 to 2.35:1. As such there is an
`opportunity to design the elements assuming that certain parts of the glass element will
`never be illuminated. The optical system is designed with lens shift to accommodate off
`axis projection. This limits the size of the illuminated patch on the final element, and
`thus defines limits for our size requirements.
`
`
`
`
`
`
`The identified size is quite large which will impact the practicality of implementation.
`One consideration is to employ an “over-under” design instead of a design offset to the
`side. This should make a difference to the size of the system when handling a rectangular
`patch of light. Smaller size reduces offset in the beams and consequently magnification
`errors and keystone issues.
`
`Magnification:
`
`If a typical path length is 100’ – or 1200 inches and the difference in path length between
`the beams is ~8”, then the magnification difference is 8/1200 0.67%. On a pixel array of
`2000 pixels, this results in 13 pixel difference in magnification. If the two images are
`centered, then this results in a mismatch of 6.5 pixels on each side. This is too much….
`
`Keystone mismatch:
`
`Offset projection apertures will result in different keystone distortion for each beam. I
`think that is what you are calculating with the toe-in calculation

`
`Lens Specs: (diameter of glass in last element)
`
`Numbers refer to the ratio of throw distance to screen width for the operating range of the
`lens. (Lenses are all zoom and have a range)
`
`1.45-1.85 – glass diameter 91mm
`1.8-2.4 – glass diameter 95mm
`2.2-3.0 – glass diameter ~115mm
`5.5 – 8.5 zoom glass diameter 144mm
`
`Note that the projector for 2D applications may use an anamorphic lens as an external
`adapter. The adapter is designed to fit all lenses, and has an input diameter of 135mm
`circle with flats top and bottom, 120mm apart.
`
`Note also that the larger zoom ratio lenses have larger elements, but smaller angles.
`
`Operating Angle
`
`Graph on page 9 – note that the angle is +/- 7 degrees on plot – I assume this is in glass,
`so represents a higher angle in air. (about 10.5 degrees)
`
`More research needs to be done on the population of beam angles.
