`Getting plugged-in with a new wireless product
`DigitalLife technology fair debuts hot games, computers and toys. Here are some of the best
`Marc Saltzman , The Gazette
`Published: Thursday, October 11, 2007
`
`It's not as big as the consumer electronics shows in Tokyo or Las Vegas, but the annual DigitalLife event in New York is a charming technology fair that lets consumers
`play with tomorrow's gadgets today.
`
`More than 250,000 square feet of floor space at the Javits Centre was packed recently with the latest in "digital lifestyle" products; the convention offered hands-on time
`with new computers, video games, software, smart phones and GPS devices.
`
`Best gadget of the show: It may not be available in Canada, but with the Canadian and U.S. dollars at parity, there's no reason not to buy this product online when it
`debuts by the holidays. The Zipit Wireless Messenger 2 (www.zipitwireless.com) is a sleek Wi-Fi instant-messaging device that lets you chat via IM without being tied
`to the personal computer.

`
`The Z2, as the company calls it, supports all major IM platforms - Windows Live/MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger (but not Skype,
`unfortunately) - and can be used with no service fees or monthly charges on any existing Wi-Fi network in the home, at the office or at your local café.
`
`Along with its messaging features, it can play music stored on optional miniSD cards or streamed from the Internet, and can display photos and slide shows. The product
`can be purchased online for $149.99 U.S.
`
`Best PC: The Gateway One (www.gateway.com/one) is an elegant all-in-one PC designed to be placed in the main living areas of a home, such as kitchens and family
`rooms.
`
`The entire Wi-Fi-enabled computer is just four inches thick. To eliminate clutter, there's a single cord coming out of the back, which leads to a small "brick" where you
`can connect a printer or other peripherals. The wireless mouse and keyboard have been preconfigured to work with the PC out of the box.
`
`Features include a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, multiple USB ports, five-in-one memory card slot, DVD burner and removable webcam.
`
`The Gateway One is available online for $1,299 U.S. and up, but the company says Canadian Best Buy locations should carry this product by the end of the year (for a
`comparable price).
`
`Best software: Check Point's Zone Alarm ForceField (www.zonealarm.com) is security software that helps protect your computer (and your personal identity) by
`creating a "force field" around your web browser to reduce the likelihood of a spyware attack, phishing scam or malicious hack into your system.
`
`Designed to work alongside your existing security software, including anti-virus programs, Zone Alarm ForceField employs a technology called "virtualization," which
`essentially creates a virtual surfing session to shield your PC and personal data from Internet threats.
`
`While it's "beta," which means it's free to use and the company encourages you to provide feedback, a packaged version of the software will be available in 2008 for
`$30.
`
`Best game: Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (www.guitarhero.com) does exactly what a good sequel should: retain much of the magic that made its
`predecessors worthy, while offering new features to justify the purchase.

`
`Players once again strap a guitar-shaped controller over their necks and plug it into an Xbox 360, PlayStation 2/3 or Nintendo Wii, racking up points by jamming along
`with classic tunes such as the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black or newer hits like the Strokes' Reptilia.
`
`But now you can challenge friends in head-to-head "battle modes" in front of the same TV or over the Internet (Wii excluded), and take on Slash, the most badass guitar
`god of all, who cameos as an unlockable character in the game. The game debuts in Canada by the end of the month; it will be rated Teen and sold for $89.99 to $99.99
`(depending on the version), including the guitar controller.
