`Teacher’s Worst Nightmare - Aeronix ZipIt
`
`READ MORE: WIRELESS, ZIPIT
`
`Forget the cell phone, the Aeronix ZipIt
`instant messaging handheld is truly the
`classroom killer teacher’s have been
`having nightmares about. Just $99, the
`only good thing is that the ZipIt
`piggybacks right onto wireless
`networks, so if there’s none around,
`you’re out of luck. Connects to 802.11b
`wireless networks and hot spots and
`can log onto AIM, MSN and Yahoo
`networks—all at the same time if
`you’re so inclined. Just 6.1 ounces, it’s
`got a black-and-white screen and OS
`upgrades are automatically downloaded
`when available.

`
`The ZipIt is also popular among hackers because it runs Linux. (Note that I said Linux
`not GNU Linux as the libc and system binaries are not from the GNU project.) Like
`many other linux-running devices, it has already been repurposed and extended by
`the Open Source community to do many other things. There is a fairly limited
`software-only approach to altering the firmware, but there is also a (fairly standard)
`add-a-serial-port approach that gives you a lot more flexibility.
