`The CP4xOO Routers are a family of products that connect a Fibre Channel link directly to either
`one or two SCSI bus (busses). A CP4x00 Router enables the exchange of SCSI command set
`information between application clients on SCSI bus devices and Fibre Channel nodes.

`The CP4100 is 3 Fibre Channel to SCSI Router providing a connection to a single SCSI bus.
`
`The CP4200 is a Fibre Channel to SCSI Router providing a connection to two SCSIbusses.

`This introduction briefly describes features of the CP4xOO routers and defines the operating‘ -
`environment of the CP4x00. The CP4xOO is treated as a black box device in this section.

`The CP4x00 FC/SCSI router is shown in Figure 2.

`1.1.1 Motivation
`
`The CP4xOO routers enable a migration path to Fibre Channel based. serial SCSI busses by
`provrding connectivrty for legacy SCSI devices. The CP4xoo is attached to a Fibre Channel
`Arbitrated Loop or switch and a SCSI bus to support up to 15 SCSI target devices (CP4100) or 30
`SCSI target devices (CP4200).. Using configuration settings. the CP4x00 router makes the SCSI
`bus devices available on the Fibre Channel network. Once it is configured, the operation of the
`CP4x00 is transparent to application clients.

`As vendors release Fibre Channel direct attach SCSI-3 devices. the CP4XOO routers will play an

`continua using legacy SCSI-2 devices.

`
`The CP4x00 is a rack mount or freestanding device with an internal power supply. It has 3 Fibre
`Channel and one or two SCSI ports. A standard, detachable power cord is used. The FC
`connector is a copper DBQ connector or optical SC duplex connector for the CP41OO and a
`standard PC GBIC module for the CP4200. The SCSI connectors are standard 68-pin ‘D'
`connectors wired as a primary SCSI bus. Additional modularjacks are provided for a serial port

`The Fibre Channel ports supports connection to an Arbitrated Loop or class 3 switch based on
`the Fibre Channel—Private Loop SCSI Direct Attach (FC-PLDA) Technical Report The CP4x00
`implements functionality beyond that specified in FC-PLDA to provide connectivity to SCSI-2
`devices. Note that Fibre Channel SCSI Profile (FCP) is defined based on SCSI-3. Therefore, a
`mapping betWeen SCSI-3 and SCSI-2 is implemented to support SCSI-2 devices. Some SCSI-3
`extensions are supported. notably Ultra negotiation and support of 32 LUNs per target address in
`800 mode.

`The SCSI port is single ended or'differential drive. actively terminated. supporting Fast-20
`operation with a 16bit bus. 1

`The Fibre Channel connection incorporates Class 3 switch support. The hardware allows for
`Fabric Loop Attach‘connectivity to be implemented in soltware when industry standards
`allow.

`The CF4x00 routers provide legacy storage connectivity support between Fibre Channel
`application clients and SCSI device resident application clients. Appropriate translation is
`provided to enable comm-Isication with a specified set of SCSI-2 devices.

`The product is comprised of:

`l. A Fibre Channel interface based on the Hewlett-Packard TachyonTM controller and a
`modular media interface (a GLM in the CP4100. a GBIC in the CP4200).

`2. An Intel i960 family processor, incorporating independent data buffer and program
`memory spaces, and associated logic required to implement a stand alone
`processing system. The CP4100 uses an i960RP. the CP4200 uses an i960RD.

`A SCSI interface based on a Symbios 53C875 (CP4100) or the Symbios 53C876
`(CP4200) series SCSI controller. The physical connectIon is based on the SCSI-3
`Parallel Interface standard and the SCSI3 Fast-20 extenSIon. The SCSI commands
`supported are defined by the SCSI-2 standard. ThIs provides compatibility with
`existing SCSI-2 devices and offers an upgrade path for future functionality...

`1. 2 Modes of Operation
`The CP4xOO Routers enable venous modes of operation between FC and SCSI target and
`initiators. These are defined below and explainedIn this section.

`Modes 1 and 2 above are the primary supporttequired. and are~to be supported concurrently in a
`single device. The CP4x00 does not support extender modes, e.g. where two units are placed
`back to back to extend SCSI busses via Fibre Channel. This support will be offered in a separate
`product

`1.2.1 Mode 1: FC. to SCSIT ..-—

`Mode 1 provides for the basic configuration of a server using Fibre Channel initiators to
`communicate with SCSI targets. This mode requiresthat the Host system have 3 FC attached
`application client and associated device drivers and software to generate SCSI3 FCP requests.
`This Fibre Channel system acts as an initiator using the CP4x00 to communicate with SCSI
`target devices

`The SCSI devices supported are SCSI-2 compliant direct or sequential access (disk, tape, or
`changer) devices. The bridge serves to translate command and status information and transfer
`data between SCSI~3 FCP and SCSI-2. allowing the use of standard SCSI-2 devices in a Fibre
`Channel environment.
`Specrfic configuration informationis required to provide FC required addressing beyond that
`providedIn the SCSI-2 model. This configurationIs discussed furtherIn the document.

`1. 2. 2 Mode 2: SCSI. to FCT
`
`Mode 2 provides for the configuration of a server using SCSI-2 commands to communicate with
`Fibre Channel targets. This mode requires that the Host system has a SCSI-2 or SCSI-3
`interface and driver software to control SCSI-2 target devices. The CP4XOO bridge will connect to
`the $081 bus and respond as a target to multiple target IDs Configuration information is required
`to identify the target IDs to which the bridge will respond on the SCSI bus.

`The CP4xOO translates the SCSI—2 commands to SCSl~3 FCP requests. allowing the use of FC
`devices With a SCSI host system This will also allow features such as a tape device acting as an
`initiator on the 808! bus to prowde full support for this type of SCSI device.

`1.2.3 Concurrent Operation
`The CP4xOO routers support concurrent operation in both modes.

`1.3 Miscellaneous Characteristics
`
`1.3.1 Configuration
`User configuration IS required to support various functional modes of operation. Configuration
`can be modified through the serial port or through the Ethernet port Configuration interfaces
`provided are SNMP over Ethernet and RS-232E. Configuration information is stored in a
`segment of nonvolatile memory and is retained across resets and power off cycles.
`
`Addressing information will be required to map from FC addresses to SCSI addresses and vice.
`versa.
`
`User configured addresses are supported for Fibre Channel addresses in order to insure that:
`known addresses are provided between loop reconfigurations. Soft addressing is also supported
`as a configuration option.
`
`1. 3. 2 Management
`SNMP manageability is provided via the 802 3(1OBaseT-ethemet) interface. This provides for
`configuration changes as well as providing statistics and error information. Crossroads provides
`a private MIB for support of CP4x00 specific features Fibre Channel public MIB support is in
`development.
`
`1 3.3 Media Interfaces
`
`The Fibre Channel media interface in the CP4100rs provided by a Gigabaud Link Module. This
`industry standard mezzanine card provides for different media types on a common mechanical
`footprint. Only the 20-bit. 53.125 MHz GLM interface is supported. Optical GLMs supported are
`Non-OFC. OFC compliant GLMs can be supported by hardware. but are not offered as a
`standard configuration.
`The CP4200 Fibre Channel Media Interface is made using a GigaBit interface Converter. or
`GBIC, The GBIC is hot swappable for live configuration changes, and can be installed through
`an opening in the rear of the CP4200.

`SCSI functionality supported is based on the capabilities of the Symbios 53CB’lx family of
`controllers. The Symbios devices support programmable microcode and implements the
`SCSI-2 subset of the SCSI-3 protocol.
`
`16«bit, wide SCSI is supported via a 68-pin 'P' connector.
`
`Two connectors are implemented for each SCSI bus, supporting middle of bus
`configurations. An external terminator is required if the CP4x00 is placed at either end of
`a SCSI chain.
`
`Supports ultra-fast. synchronous transfers at 20 Megatransfers per second;. i.e.
`40MBlsecond.
`
`Both Differential and Single Ended SCSI drive is supported. All components related to
`the drivers are implemented on a separate daughter card, the SCSI-interface board (SIB).
`The CP4xOO product can be populated with single-ended or differential drive SlBs.
`
`The Initiator SCSI ID of the CP4x00 can be configured via software
