`ABSTRACT
`
`A media managing method is disclosed. A method links a
`graphical interface soft button with a media file saved in a
`memory system of a portable electronic device, maintains a
`collection of information that represents the graphical inter-
`face soft button in the memory system, and communicates at
`least some ofthe collection to a different electronic device in
`order to allow a user to View a representation ofthe graphical
`interface soft button on an associated display ofthe different
`clcctronic device. The method further receives a signal to
`begin playing the media file in response to a selection of the
`representation.
`
`At the time of issuance and publication of this certificate,
`the patent remains subject to pending reexamination
`control number 95/001,281 filed Feb. 3, 2010. The claim
`content of the patent may he subsequently revised if a
`reexamination certificate issues from the reexamination
`proceeding.

`interface that allows for comrnunication of data and
`power; the non—circular portable device interface con-
`figured to provide at least a portion of a link between the
`electronic device and a portable electronic device that
`has a memory, a processor, a display, and software saved
`at theportable electronic device, the software configured
`to direct the portable electronic device to save an audio
`file in the memory, to save a name of the audio file in the
`r11er11ory, to associate the audio file with the name, to
`include the name in a menu of availa ble content, and to
`communicate a collection of infonnation comprising the
`name to the electronic device; and
`the electronic device configured to utilize the collection of
`information to present a soft button on a display associ-
`ated with the electronic device and to allow a user: (1 )to
`interact with a user interface device communicatively
`coupled to the electronic device to navigate through at
`least at least a portion of content saved ir1 the memory of
`the portable electronic device;
`to view at least a
`partial representation of the menu on the display asso-
`ciated with the electronic device; and (3) to choose the
`audio file for processing by using the user interface
`device to select a soft button representation of the name
`displayed on the associated display so that responsive to ,
`the selection the audio file can be played by the portable
`electronic device and to be output via the electronic
`device while the audio file remains stored on the portable
`electronic device, wherein the electronic device is con-
`figured to receive the collection of information and to
`present the name on the associated display by software
`embedded in the electronic device asfirmware.
`31. A media managing method comprising:
`storing a media file in a memory system of a portable
`haizd—held device that is not a conventional personal
`computer or a laptop computer, wherein the portable
`hand—held devicefurther has a display and aprocessor;
`storing a collection ofinformation about the mediafile in
`the memory system, wherein the collection includes data
`representing a namefor the mediafile;
`communicating at least some of the collection from the
`portable hand—held device to a di/ferent electronic
`
`2
`device in order to allow a user to view a soft button
`comprising the name on an associated display of the
`difcrent electronic device; and
`thereafter receiving a signal in the portable hand—held
`device to begin playing the media file by the portable
`hand—held device in response to a selection of the soft
`button at the diferent electronic device; and
`outputtinga played version ofthe mediafile across aphysi-
`cal interface oftheportable hand—held device while the
`media file remains stored on the portable hand—held
`device, wherein the physical interface is configured to
`facilitate a communicative coupling of the portable
`hand—held device and the diferent electronic device,fur-
`ther wherein the physical interface is not circular and
`has a width dimension and a length dimension that is
`longer than the width dimension,
`wherein the media_file is received as an over the air down-
`load at the portable hand—held device,
`wherein the different electronic device is configured to
`receive the at least some ofthe collection and to present
`the name on the associated display by software embed-
`ded in the electronic device asfirmware, and
`wherein a battery ofthe portable hand—lzeld device is con-
`figured to be rechargedftom a power source electrically
`coupled to the portable hand—held device via the physi-
`cal interface.
`32. The method ofclaim 3],further comprising communi-
`catively coupling the portable lzand—held device with a per-
`sonal computer ofa user,‘ and receiving the mediafile via the
`communicative coupling.
`33. The method ofclaim 3 I, wherein the diflerentelectronic
`device is an automobile sound system component.

`EXAMINER’S COMMENT
`
`According to the EXaminer’s Answer dated February 6, 2014, only independent claim 22
`
`and associated dependent claims 24-30 were subject to grounds of rejection on appeal. Claim 23,
`
`indicated as containing allowable subject matter, has been now canceled by the Patent Owner,
`
`and the allowable subject matter of that claim has been incorporated into independent claim 22
`
`(see PO’s amendment dated April 4, 2014). In View of this amendment, all grounds of rejection
`
`have been overcome. Claims 1-22 and 24-40 are determined to be patentable.
