`Wireless chip offers an optimized implementation of Sun
`Microsystems' KVM environment that produces up to 40 times the
`speed and consumes less power than C-compiled Java VMs running
`on traditional hardware. Their SIJCE (Support Layer In Consumer
`Electronics) product allows developers to eliminate real-time
`operating systems and instead write directly to their support layer
`and the underlying KVM. The Jacknife Tool Suite includes a
`software development environment (WHITEBoard), hardware
`development board (BLUEBoard), and a debugger to aid in
`embedded device development. BLUEBoard includes a fully
`integrated hardware kit which includes SLICE ported on an ARM
`Microprocessor with Zucotto's Bluetooth stack and a Digianswer
`Bluetooth module. The complete Zucotto Recipe also includes a Jini
`Broker for a truly dynamic, platform -independent solution. One
`slick demo includes a mobile device requesting an MP3 song for
`download. Not only did the device download the song wirelessly,
`but the actual Java MP3 Player was also downloaded and installed
`on the fly shortly before the song began playing. It is our opinion
`that the combination of handheld devices, Bluetooth, and Jini will
`create entirely new classes of applications never before thought
`possible. It is clear that Zucotto intends on becoming a significant
`player in this space.

`After picking up the occasional Hershey's Kiss from the multi-
`billion dollar conglomerates (we're giving out thousands of T-shirts
`and that's the best they can do?i?), we then ran into a large
`number of companies intent on providing server platforms that will
`handle the repurposing of data-driven content onto a wide variety
`of devices. In our opinion, the worst of these products (no names
`mentioned, of course) simply allow HTML to be parsed and be
`regenerated as WAP, PQA, etc, Not very interesting, scalable, or
`sustainable long-term, in our opinion so we'll move on. The best of
`these applications support a middle-tier/middleware layer that
`uses XML as a data transport before content is generated and
`dispersed out to the devices. We'll be covering this area in the
`coming weeks and months with an in-depth look at wireless server
`offerings (something near and dear to the heart of potential
`wireless ASP's). Three companies that we met with whose products
`seem to be on the right track are:
`
`- Mob||eQ - Their XMLEdge Server is an enterprise-scale
`server offering content management and distribution via
`XML. Also available are vertical business modules that
`overlay the XMLEdge server product.
`NetMorf - Their SiteMorfer 2.0 product can access a wide
`variety of enterprise datastores, includes a graphical
`designer, and supports advanced features such as user
`logging, international languages, and end-to-end security.
`Tantau - Tantau's Wireless Internet Platform was developed
`by former Tandem engineers so there is a natural slant
`towards high-availability and high scalability (always good
`things when discussing application or content serversi).
`Again,k this product makes use of "standard" technologies
`such as Java, XML, and CORBA.
`
`Wireless applications introduce a new element to the application
`development mix:
`location. The ability to add a user's location as a
`data point introduces a wealth of new services and capabilities that
`can be offered to end users. Consequently, many companies with
`mapping/GIS backgrounds are now agressively pursuing the
`intersection of mapping and wireless technologies. Two cool demos
`we saw today were from XYPoint and RTS Networks. XYPoint
`introduced their Webwireless service today which allows data to
`be distributed to virtually any device -— with or without WAP
`support! This service makes use of SMS to pass text messages
`back and forth to the user. Once the user receives a notification
`(based on some trigger or event defined through WebWire|ess's
`Web-based interface) the user responds to the message by dialing
`back into the server (one button push thanks again to the user's
`configurations entered via the Web). The server then responds
`with a message send via SMS to complete the transaction.
`Granted, some extra steps are required and the user cannot
`visually browse information. On the other hand, SMS works on the

`vast majority of digital networks installed across the world today
`whereas WAP support is far rarer and even virtually nonexistent in
`North America. Webwireless also supports text-to-voice/IVR for
`online auctions capability. RTS Networks demonstrated their
`Wireless Investor and Wireless Direction applications. The wireless
`directions capability integrates with a back—end GIS (ESRI ArcIMS)
`to handle the publication of driving directions based on your
`current location. This application worked as described and was
`fairly impressive unlike many of the vaporware WAP capabilities
`that are being trumpeted. Curiously, however, a visit to their web
`site revealed no mention of the product. For now, trust us and
`check their site regularly for updates.
`
`Finally, from the sometimes-the-simpiest-solutions-are-the-best
`department, comes the PocketMail service and PocketMail BackF|ip
`product from . PocketMail is an email-only service
`offering from Pocketsclence designed to deliver email to Palm
`Computing devices (Professional, II], V, VII). PocketMail is
`extremely useful in that it allows the user to aggregate email from
`any number of accounts for downloading to your Palm organizer.
`Cool enough...but read on. The BackF|ip product is an add-on
`modem for your organizer that works with any digital or analog
`phone via an analog interface. Perhaps best of all, the service is
`only $10 per month for (in their words) "all-you-can-eat". If you're
`in the camp that would love email access but sees no need to use
`your Palm device for wireless data access, PocketMail looks like a
`perfect solution.
