`
`Translation Certification
`
`Statement concerning certain characteristics of the Japanese language.
`
`We, Apex Translations, Inc., a professional translation company, certified in accordance with ISO
`
`9001-2008 and EN 15038-2006, hereby certify that the Japanese language does not make a
`grammatical distinction in nouns between indefinite and definite articles. It is therefore often not
`
`possible to clearly determine whether an object is referred to in the sense of “a" or “the”, unless
`
`additional context is provided that would permit these distinctions.
`
`In the Japanese Patent No. 04-71222 by Jinbo et al. (project no. 38241), a specific Japanese
`
`sentence is succeptibie to the following two translations:
`
`“Then substrate 11 is aligned with a mask which has been mounted in the projection exposure
`apparatus.”
`
`Or:
`
`“Then substrate 11 is aligned with the mask which has been mounted in the projection exposure
`apparatus.”
`
`Both translations can be considered correct translations of the Japanese text, since the Japanese
`
`text provides no additional context that would suggest otherwise.
