`
`16 February, 1999 Los Angeles... O.J. Simpson’s 1968 Heisman trophy was sold today for $255,500 during the world’s largest major
`real-time Internet auction. Held at Butterfield & Butterfield’s Los Angeles gallery, the auction consisted of property seized from
`Simpson’s home by the LA County Sheriff’s Office. A crowded auction room of collectors vied with Internet bidders worldwide,
`pushing prices high above estimates. The 74 lots offered brought nearly $430,000.
`
`"By combining the strengths of Butterfield, Yahoo! Auctions and LiveBid.com, we are bringing the world of tradition auctions into
`the new millennium and changing the face of the auction space", said George Noceti, senior vice president, Internet Auction Services,
`Butterfield & Butterfield.
`
`The most valuable lot offered Tuesday evening was the 1968 Heisman awarded to Simpson and unique in that its plaque included the
`typographical error in the misspelling of the word "Athletic". The Heisman sold to an unidentified bidder placing a bid via telephone.
`
`Property was offered by order of the State Court to satisfy a judgement against Simpson with funds being paid to the Goldman and
`Brown families. Bidding was active and highly competitive as each of the lots sold to prices exceeding expectations. The sales’ first
`lot, a pair of number 32 jerseys sold for $5,462.50, five times the estimate, setting the pace for the lots to follow. Another number 32
`jersey estimated at hundreds of dollars sold for $5,175. An acrylic on canvas painting by disco diva Donna Summer titled Picasso Girl
`brought $6,325 and a beautiful Tiffany style leaded glass lampshade sold for $8,050. The official certificate from the Professional
`Football’s Hall of Fame fetched $11,500.
