`
`What is the Acrobat Portable
`Document Format (PDF)?
`
`An Adobe Acrobat 3.0 PDF takes a file of unwieldy PostScript code
`and distills it into a database of objects on a page. It is highly
`compact with all embedded fonts, pictures, and compressed vector
`objects. It is device and media independent with CMYK and named
`(spot) color support and (olor space definitions incorporated. It
`is a trap-able, impose-able, convertible page-oriented file that is
`viewable by Macintosh, DOS, Windows, Unix and
`WWW browsers using the free Acrobat Reader.
`It is as it says-a Portable Document Format(cid:173)
`optimized for uniform and predictable high-end
`printing and re-purposable into other digital forms.
`
`Device independence,
`
`The needfor printing drivers or printer description files has made
`printing more device dependent than users would have liked. But now
`the Acrobat 3.0 PDF provides the best method yet for storing and
`defining a document for print. The same file can be used for digital
`proofing, large format(imposed) film imageseWng, computer-to(cid:173)
`p/ate, black and white document printing, digital color printing. color
`press, internet viewIng and printing, and archivingformafs that
`can be reconstituted Into the original objects, so pictures can be
`reconverted for other applicatiOns.
`
`Media independence.
`
`PDF allows you to use the medium that best suits your need: page or
`imposedfilm, imposed plate - polyester or aluminum, digital color
`proof, on-demand printingfrom digital presses, WWWfiles,CD-ROM
`files, or digital image archives. Publishing has never had more oppor(cid:173)
`tunity for extending its franchise and reinventing itself

`
`~4 ation of publishing workflows
`
`PDF publishing,
`
`Publish in print or non"print form. For instance, convert (1 year's
`worth of your publication to POFs and record them on a CD-ROM.
`Sell this reference archive at a value-added price. Why? It's not just
`the publication, you can also search through all issues to find the
`keywords and information you want. Users will pay a premium for
`search and retrieval. You can also put the POFs on the WWWwith
`a password and give it only to paid subscribers. Create an Qnhive
`of issues from past years. PDFs retain the look and feel of your
`publication. Users can read them on-screen or print them out
`on almost any PostScript printer.
`
`Distributed output
`and remote proofing:
`
`Send POFs with the efficacy of eledronic communication tv
`additional print sites to bring reproduction closer to the point of
`distribution, with the assurance that each site will print a uniform
`ond predictable document. Send PDFs back to the client to proof
`on a digital proofer with proper color transforms. PDFs speed the
`production and the delivery process. Automated prepress with
`PDF It makes a net work.

`
`What is the process
`to make PDF files?
`
`It Is called distilling. Your document
`is saved as a PostScript file and then
`distilled with Adobe Acrobat DistlUer.
`You can also use PDFWriter, a chooser(cid:173)
`level uti1lty that automatically saves
`PostScript and distills without operator
`Intervention, or you can use scripting
`or other automated functions to distill
`Individual files or groups of files. PDF
`publishing workflows will include
`the ability to drag and drop your
`application file over an icon for
`automatic distilling.

`It does not require special print drivers or

`PDF workflow versus parallel wor
`
`Multiple repurposing of
`the same PDF document
`
`Once in Acrobat lO PDF form your document is now free to be anything
`it needs to be: paper, film, plate, proof, WWW-viewablefile,data,document
`or image archive, and more. New automated workflow tools will open
`the PDF, save the pictures in a new form, and re-distil! the document for
`another purpose. Or save the pictures into an image database for access
`by clients as they build documents for different publishing streams.
`Accept ads in digital form and place them on pages without expensive
`copydot scanning. With a totally digital publication you can now go
`directly to plate or digita! press.
`
`PDF publishing workflow
`
`Drag files over icons representing desired functions and the system
`does the rest. Files are moved through various operations on their way
`to uniform and predictable output. PDF workflows are open and non(cid:173)
`proprietary. Because the PDF embeds so much about your document in
`new and intelligent way, work now flows through systems specifically
`designed for PDF handling and cuts the need for pre-flighting, repro(cid:173)
`gramming, time spent opening flies to change settings, and other
`activities involved with checking and setting files for high-end printing.
`Savings of 50% over conventional digital workflows are predicted.

`
`Today's digital workflows reqUire many steps and many pOints of human
`intervention. To meet the needs of a multitude of clients with different
`application programs, layout approaches, prepress knowledge, and skill
`levels, many prepress networks lose the automation that they promised.
`PDF workflows give you the automation to increase throughput and
`reduce human interaction.
`
`Conventional electronic
`publishing workflow
`
`Receiving files from a host of clients applying a host of applications
`with a host of fonts and a host of EPS orllFF or CT or other bitmap fifes,
`then using the appropriate version of the driver to generate the proper
`PostScript code to get the printout the client desires has long been a
`painful, error-prone process. Pre-flighting was born to check the files for
`missing elements, incorrect settings and proper procedures. Teams of
`people are now assembled just go review jobs so they can be printed.
