`
`SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUS|NESS WIRE)--May 15, 1998--
`
`Improves Intellectual Property Protection on Previously Patented
`
`Control Channel Technology
`
`Aeris Communications, Inc. announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from
`the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) on a patent covering the system
`architecture of Aeris MicroBurst(TM) service.
`
`MicroBurst is a low-cost wireless data and messaging technology that uses the control
`channel of the cellular network to enable a wide range of short packet data
`applications such as Automated Vehicle Location (AVL), cargo tracking, remote
`monitoring of security alarms and other devices, and Automated Meter Reading
`(AMR).
`
`In early 1997, Aeris was awarded a fundamental patent on its control channel data
`technology entitled "Wireless Communications Application Specific Enabling Method
`and Apparatus," U.S. Patent No. 5,594,740. The '740 patent broadly covers the use of
`control channels in cellular and other mobile radiotelephone systems for transporting
`wireless application-specific data.
`
`With the platform of the '740 patent in place, Aeris has pursued intellectual property
`protection, both in the United States and internationally, for its continuing technology
`development efforts. The new MicroBurst patent, allowed this week, is an important
`addition to Aeris' Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) portfolio. The patent is expected in
`1998.

`
`"The '740 patent gave us broad protection for control channel data technologies," said
`Dick Gossen, president and chief executive officer of Aeris. "This new patent will
`protect the specific architecture and key attributes of MicroBurst itself, including the
`centralized gateway and the full mobility and auto-roaming features which have made
`MicroBurst the overwhelming choice of carriers and customers alike."
`
`"We are extremely pleased by the news that our MicroBurst patent has been allowed,"
`Gossen added. "We have promised our business partners -- carriers, application
`providers and radio manufacturers that we will continually work to enhance the value
`of MicroBurst service. Securing additional IPR protection of the technology is an
`important step in delivering that promise."
`
`An abstract of the newly allowed patent follows:
`
`A method for communicating messages between a communicator and a central
`monitoring station over a telecommunications network that has a voice channel for
`transmitting user messages and a control channel for transmitting control messages
`that manage access to and use of the voice channel. The method involves obtaining a
`message containing application-specific data at the communicator and encoding the
`message in a sequence of digits associated with a control message to create an
`encoded message. A well-known control code is also encoded in the sequence of digits
`associated with the control message to invoke the forwarding of the sequence of
`digits, including the encoded message, by a local telecommunications switching
`center upon detecting the control code. The control message and associated
`sequence of digits are transmitted to the local telecommunications switching center
`over the control channel, bypassing the voice channel. The local telecommunications
`switching center detects the control code, and forwards the control code and the
`encoded message over a communications medium to a central monitoring station in
`response to detecting the control code. The central monitoring station then decodes
`the encoded message to retrieve the application specific data.
`
`About Aeris Communications, Inc.
`
`Aeris Communications, Inc., headquartered in San Jose, Calif., provides wireless
`connectivity for a broad array of short packet signaling and messaging services using
`its proprietary MicroBurst utility. MicroBurst employs the control channel infrastructure
`of the cellular network as a transmission medium to achieve low cost of service and
`ubiquitous coverage. Initial applications include vehicle position and condition
`reporting, security and equipment monitoring, and utility meter reading. For more
