`
`
`Dear Colleagues:
`As president of the Controlled Release Society (CRS), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the
`37th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the Controlled Release Society!
`This year, we convene in the beautiful Pacific Northwest city of Portland, where I know you’ll
`experience fresh air and I am sure that our conference will stimulate much fresh thinking. The
`CRS Annual Meeting & Exposition is a diverse and far-reaching experience attracting attendees
`from around the world. The Oregon Convention Center provides the perfect venue in which
`to see old friends, make new connections, strengthen important collaborations, and enhance
`professional development.
`The 2010 program promises to be one of discovery with many new programs and events:
`CRS Innovation Sunday, CRS Partnering, Women in Science Luncheon, Young Scientist
`Committee’s Networking Night at Bridgeport Brewing Company, and the After Party following
`the Closing Banquet. Yes, we have a lot of new and fun events for you to enjoy, and I hope that
`these enhance your experience at this our 37th Annual Meeting & Exposition. Make sure that
`you take advantage of these great networking opportunities! CRS Scientific Secretary Ijeoma
`Uchegbu and 2010 program chairs—David Putnam, Leila Zarif, Ick Chan Kwon, Christophe
`Barbe, James Oxley, and Mike Rathbone—have planned a terrific scientific program and
`I thank them for their efforts.
`I welcome you to the City of Roses, Portland, Oregon. I hope you have planned some free time
`before or after the meeting to enjoy all that Portland and the surrounding area has to offer
`visitors. Have a fabulous time at the 2010 CRS Annual Meeting & Exposition. Be sure to check
`out our scientific sessions, poster sessions, networking events, and do not miss the opportunity to
`connect with our wonderfully supportive exhibitors. Remember to let me know how you find the
`meeting by filling out our surveys!
`It’s been my honor and also my personal and professional pleasure to serve the CRS membership
`this past year. Best wishes for a successful annual meeting!
`Best regards,
`Diane J. Burgess, Ph.D.
`CRS President

`Saturday Program Highlights
`
`Educational Workshop: Nanomedicine: From
`Materials Design to Clinical Applications
`Additional registration required.
`Chairs: Hamid Ghandehari, University of Utah, U.S.A., and
`Claus-Michael Lehr, Saarland University, Germany
`During this workshop the attendees will learn and engage in
`the discussion of concepts related to the design and synthesis/
`fabrication of nanomaterials, their interaction with cells and
`biological systems, and their translation to clinic.
`Educational Workshop: Characterization of
`Nanoparticles and Microparticles Using
`State-of-the-Art Techniques
`Additional registration required.
`Co-sponsored by Celanese EVA Performance Polymers
`Chairs: Zhibing Zhang, University of Birmingham, U.K., and
`Nicole Papen-Botterhuis, TNO Science & Industry, The
`Netherlands
`This workshop will provide knowledge on the possibilities of
`many state-of-the-art techniques to characterize encapsulates
`for various controlled release applications, such as (cryo)electron
`microscopy (SEM/TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS),
`zeta potential measurements, dissolution testing (DSP), atomic
`force microscopy and micromanipulation, thermogravimetric
`analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),
`dynamic in vitro gastrointestinal models (TIM), confocal
`laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), in vivo toxicology studies
`of nanoparticles, permeation measurements for determining
`barrier properties, etc. After this workshop, you will be able to
`decide which characterization tool gives you the best answer to
`your problem.
`

`
`Educational Workshop: Enhancing Bioavailability of
`Poorly Soluble Drugs via Melt Extrusion Technology:
`From Formulation to Commercialization
`Additional registration required.
`Co-sponsored by BASF and PolyMedex Discovery Group-Delivery
`Science
`Chairs: Nigel Langley, BASF, U.S.A., and Michael Repka,
`University of Mississippi, U.S.A.
`The workshop’s primary goal is to provide updates of existing
`knowledge for hot-melt extrusion (HME) such that attendees
`will increase their expertise with respect to this rapidly
`emerging processing technique. The workshop will also present
`an overview to those who are new to the technology such that
`these scientists may examine the opportunities available via
`HME. Attendees will also hear about the outlook regarding
`further perspectives for this technology.
`Young Scientist Workshop I: Improving the
`Solubility of Poorly Soluble Drugs
`Chairs: Raid Alany, University of Auckland, New Zealand, and
`Ron Ortiz, Upsher-Smith Labs, U.S.A.
`Technological advances in drug discovery have revolutionized
`the efficiency of lead identification. However, the promise of
`New Chemical Entities (NCEs) as suitable drug treatments
`can only be fulfilled if they can be successfully formulated
`and administered in vivo. One of the major barriers to
`the development of many NCEs is their poor solubility in
`aqueous media. This complimentary young scientist workshop
`will introduce the audience to the science underpinning the
`technologies for improving drug aqueous solubility. The secrets
`to successfully formulating a poorly soluble drug using a
`number of formulation strategies will be discussed. Examples of
`commercialized delivery technologies will be presented.

`
`Young Scientist Workshop II: True Stories; Career
`Development
`Chair: Jeffrey James, Molecular Profiles Ltd., U.K., and
`Jonathon Zhao, Cordis Johnson & Johnson U.S.A.
`The career landscape for the young scientist in controlled
`release and delivery is more varied and challenging. While
`post-graduate programs continue to provide the platform for
`professional growth, how does the young scientist make use
`of such growth for achievement and career development? The
`True Stories workshop will provide young scientists with the
`information to “fast-track” their career decisions, from both an
`academic and industrial perspective. The workshop will feature
`stories from speakers who have “been there and done that,”
`from putting their CV together all the way through to starting
`their own successful company! Informally, the True Stories
`workshop offers you, the young scientist, a feel for the types
`of issues, technical and non-technical, that may occur during
`career development. This workshop aims to uncover issues
`experienced by those in the industry, with an emphasis on the
`important information that you cannot get from a textbook!
