`
`
`Professor Hopfenberg's S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. are from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the
`Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining the chemical engineering faculty of North Carolina
`State University in February 1967, he supervised research at the Amicon Corporation, Cambridge,
`Massachusetts, in the areas of applied industrial membrane separations, biomedical products, by-product
`recovery from pulp mill wastes, and applied colloid chemistry. He continued his membrane-related research at
`the U.S. Army Natick Laboratories and was assigned to the Army Concept Team in Viet Nam during his final
`year of active military service.
`
`Dr. Hopfenberg was named one of the outstanding teachers at North Carolina State University in 1969, 1975,
`and 1979. In 1971 he was presented the Sigma Xi research award at North Carolina State University as
`“Young Scientist of the Year.” He was awarded a Senior Visiting Fellowship from the Science Research
`Council, U.K. and a Visiting Fellowship at Clare Hall during his sabbatical at the University of Cambridge in
`1977. He received the Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award in 1978 and the Alcoa
`Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award in 1980. He was a visiting professor at the University
`of Bologna in Italy in 1982 and 1984 and he participated in the “Invitation Program for Foreign Researchers”
`sponsored by the Japanese government in 1984, supporting his invited lecture tour throughout Japan. He was
`named the 1984 Xerox Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He received the
`R. J. Reynolds Industries Award for Research, Teaching, and Extension and was appointed by the United
`Nations Industrial Development Organization to serve as a consultant to the National Chemical Laboratory of
`India in 1985. He returned to Italy as a visiting professor at the University of Naples in 1989 and to the
`University of Sassari in 1993. He received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal of Excellence from the
`Board of Trustees of NC State in 1997 and was elected a Visiting Fellow Commoner of Trinity College,
`Cambridge for the 1997-1998 academic year. He was selected as the Visiting Researcher for the Year 2000 at
`Kansai University in Osaka, Japan.
`
`In addition to the broad discipline of chemical engineering, his research includes applied surface, colloid, and
`polymer science with special emphasis upon membrane transport and aging phenomena in polymeric materials
`applied to pharmaceutical formulations and controlled drug delivery systems for human and veterinary
`medicine as well as barrier plastics for specialty packaging.
`
`He served as Chairman of the 1974 Gordon Research Conference on “Separations and Purification.” He
`chaired NSF-sponsored, United States-Italy symposia on “Advanced Membrane Science and Technology” in
`Ravello, Italy, in May 1977, in October 1988, and May 1999. Dr. Hopfenberg has served for more than fifteen
`years on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Applied Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
`and Science. He was a founding member of the editorial board of The Journal of Membrane Science, serving
`from 1978 to 2009 and also served for several years on the editorial advisory board of Gas Separation and
`Purification. He also served three sequential terms on the Academic Advisory Council of the Industrial
`Research Institute. Dr. Hopfenberg is an active industrial and legal consultant.
`
`Dr. Hopfenberg was named Camille Dreyfus Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering
`at North Carolina State University in July 1980 and served as Department Head for seven years. He
`subsequently served as Associate Dean of Engineering and Special Assistant to the Chancellor at North
`Carolina State University through June 1990. In his capacity as Special Assistant to the Chancellor, he served
`as Interim Director of Athletics at NC State from October 16, 1989 to June 15, 1990. He served as Executive
`Assistant to the Chancellor from 1990 through January 1992. He was named Vice Chancellor for Institutional
`Advancement in January 1992 and served until mid- August 1992. He subsequently served for seven years as
`Director of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State and as of
`September 1, 1999 he was named Director Emeritus of the Kenan Institute and Camille Dreyfus Professor of
`Chemical Engineering, serving on a half-time appointment. He was appointed Camille Dreyfus Professor
`Emeritus of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering effective January 1, 2004.
